This sounds like the William Coker, son of Joseph Coker, who married Jemina Crumpton in Greenville Co, SC, and lived later in Bibb Co, AL Stan Coker
I am looking for info on Calvin Coker who was my grandpa. He was born in Arkansas in the 1840s. I do not know the name of his father or mother. I do know he had several brothers, don't know about sisters. I don't know names of any of them. Have you ever ran across the name in the Ark. Cokers anywhere. I was wondering if he was of the Buck Coker family. Any help will be appreciated.
Dear List: In trying to locate information on "my" William Coker b. ca 1786 NC (m. Leanna Brazeale, ends up in Monroe Co., MS), I wrote to the NARA for a file on a William Coker who served in the War of 1812 from SC in Nash's Regiment (SC Volunteers). It took me over a year and 3 tries before I finally got anything back, but I have the file and :( it's not my William! But I know he belongs to someone out there! So I thought I'd give you all a little belated Christmas gift and share some of what's in his file, in hopes that I can find a "real" home for it! --------------- Excerpts from the Declaration of William Coker dated Nov 14, 1850... State of Alabama, County of Shelby aged fifty-eight years and a resident of the County of Bibb, State of AL... volunteered at Greenville District, SC abt. Is anyone interested in copies of any of these documents? Please let me know! All the best, Allison M. Lynn-Marie, I've been working on this line for some time. I've been in contact with some of the Wood family researchers and just got a chance this past Monday to visit central Arkansas. However, what I've got doesn't quite mesh with what you're saying. I have Nancy as a daughter of William "Buck" Coker. Note that the source below lists her as a daughter of Edward "Ned". I'm It is often confusing since these names repeat. Is your Jane--Mary Jane born 1806? who married Charley Sneed? Or someone else? I've got tons of stuff--most of which I haven't had time to organize or verify. I'm descended from George W. Wood and Nancy Coker through their daughter Jane, who married "Dud" or Strander. From History of Marion County, Earl Berry 1977 Marion County Historical Association p. 273-- "George Wood, son of Judge William Sr., married Nancy Coker, daughter of Ned Coker, one of the pioneer Cokers of Marion County. their descendants were: Dicie, who married James Laremore...who had Martha Jane, who married Cyrus (Si) Wilson, who became parents of Dora B., who married Will Patterson; Elder John T., who married Reese Young; Keisie, who married Mary Ebee. George's daughter "Janie" married "Dud" Coker; Hard married a daughter of John Dixon; Hard's brother, Ned, also married a Dixon; Goerge, Jr. joined the Federal Armey and went to Texas after the war; Sarah Ann married Elihu Henderson; Winnie married a Stalcup; Patsy never married; William and Soloman were killed in the Mountain Meadow Massacre on their way to California. Winnie's children were: George, who never married, and Rachel Ann, who was the first wife of John Hampton." 1860 Census Marion Co. Ark. I don't have a positive match, but this looks interesting. I have a Mary E. Jones who was a dau of Harrison Marion Jones. I show her birth as Dec 23, 1878 - close to yours and died 1962 - my data could be in error because that is all I have in my data. From another Maltsberger researcher I have William James Maltsberger married to a Mary Ellen Jones, but their data stops there - no dates, etc., except b/d dates on William. It is possible that my Mary E. Jones was the wife of their William James Maltsberger. The parents of my Mary E. Jones, Harrison Marion Jones and Georgia Ann Glenn, were married June 25 1873 at Yucaipa Ranch (12 miles east San Benardino CA). I don't show any Maltsbergers in CA in 1880, but they could have gone there by 1900. According to the Maltsberger researcher, William James's father died in Pawnee OK 1905 and his mother, Eleanor Burt, died in San Antonio, date unknown. That's all they provide. Does any of this look interesting? I know that the Jones family went to CA in 1866 and stayed there. Is it possible your Maltsberger went to CA in 1890's? Let me know what you think.

I am not sure where this message came from or if someone is also seeking information on the Coker/Ellisons of Mississippi. I have no proof of the family of Dempsey Coker, b circa 1800, but I think his father may have been Joseph Coker who appears in the 1790 census of NC Burke county. He had a brother Charles and nephews, William, Charles, and Leonard. Joseph Coker had three sons: Charles, William and Joseph. I believe that the elder Joseph was Joseph Dempsey as the name appears in the progeny of many of his grandchildren. I believe our Dempsey was the son of one of these sons, probably Charles as he named one of his sons Charles. Joy Coker

Hi Tom, In respone to your notes: 1. Thomas Coker, Susanah Coker, administrator, 17 July, 1760. What county & state? Thomas doesn't fit "our" naming pattern 2. A William Coker received 397 acres in 1766 Rowan, Surry in now Stokes County, NC. Purchased from Ab Whitworth, wit by Absalom Jordan. Propety is where Ballew Creek flows into Dan River next to county line. Propery was next to Noble Ladd, son of Amos Ladd, who came to NC from Fluvanna Co, VA. Neighbor of John Moore, Charles Hulseys, the Stone Family, Matlocks, Strange & others. Coker sold this land in 1778 to Amos Ladd, son of Noble Ladd. Numerous connections to these neighbors. 3 Joseph Coker of Burke Co, NC. Records indicate a likely date of birth of about 1753. Charles Coker was born about 1751. Charles and Williams dates of birth seem to be close and Joseph is much younger suggesting they may have had different mothers. Charles had a son mentioned in his estate papers born 1793. He is found later in Smith Co along with his brother Warren. The adult Joseph of Burke is likely the same Joseph of Greenville Co, SC. 4 The Tory issue. A complicated issue. We recently had a Presidential election that found the nation equally divided resulting in a great deal of contenous behavior. Ultimately the nation became one again. I recommend the reading of Kings Mountain; It's Men and It's Heroes by Dr Lymon Draper. He explains in his work that it was myth to think that there was unanimous support for the Rev Cause. He goes on to cite instances and locations in SC & NC where there was greater Tory support than Whig. From his work we learn that Burke Co, NC seemed to be equaly divided with each side contributing equal numbers to the battle at King's Mountain. There was post war sentiment to punish those with Tory leanings after the war but cooler heads prevailed. Col McDowell of Burke Co was one of those that spread "oil on the water" in Burke. You will find that Cokers were often at odds, according to court records, with the White, Davenport, Wiseman, and Browning families. They were all kin. James Taylor White was the patriarch. Reuben White, son of JTW, was killed very early in the War by Indians/Torys. The Whites, Davenports, Wisemans and their kin also moved on shortly after 1790 as did the Cokers and their associates. If you check those families that were supportive to the Cokers in the court records you will find they were often indicted as Torys also. Pascal Estes and some of his kinsmen of Burke, indicted as Torys also moved to Greenville Co and lived next door to the Cokers. In the 1790 census of Greenville the Hulseys, Matlocks and Estes are shown on adjoining lines. Charles Coker moved to Knox Co, TN about 1793/1795. There is a misdated Tax record in Burke that makes this issue confusing. The Charles Coker farm is today what is Colonial Village in South Knoxville. The Coker property was within walking distance to neighbor Gov John Sevier's home. Sevier's home is preserved as a landmark and musem today. Sevier was a hero of King's Mountain. Joseph White of Burke Co also came to Knox Co, TN, about the same time as Charles Coker. William Coker moved earlier and held a prominient piece of property there. About 400 acres on a point of land that jutted out into the river. Today the property is occupied by the Univ of Tenn Hospital and is just across the river from the U and downtown Knxoville. The Moores. The abstracts regarding Edward Lee and Judith Moore are a trap. They were poorly abstracted. You have to look at the original documents to interprety them correctly and they still are difficult to understand clearly. Judith Moore, widow of Edward Lee, was the dau of John Moore of Fluvanna Co, VA. Judith with her husband Edward Lee, brother Jesse Moore and brother in law, Abraham Strange, came to Burke Co, NC, from Fluvanna Co, VA, at the same time. Rebuen White, son of JTW, was their local guide who helped find them property. William "Buck" Coker, son of Charles Coker and his first wife married the daughter of Judith Moore and Edward Lee. Her first name is not known. Her sister married Deep Waters. So Judith Moore was step-mother and mother in law to Buck Coker. We suspect that Buck did not leave TN for AR until Judith Moore died about 1813 or 1814. Regards, Stan
Hi Beth , Hope you had a great Christmas , looking through old notes and was wondering what films in Pike Co. have you not viewed yet . I'm going to look at some Talladega County films also after the New Year . I'll feel much better finishing up the films in Talladega Co. and Pike as well as Evergreen . The Pike Co. Thomas and Nathaniel Coker is a must to follow up on , this has put another wall in my research , you are going to be a great Genealogist , your always keep me going on my family line of research . I still hope to fine proof of a connection to your family descendants. Maybe I'll find something in the viewing of the films that could pull our families together . You know the 1840 we know there was a Nathan Coker in Coosa County , was he in Pike County in 1830? Well guess I'll cut this e-mail short . Have a great weekend!
