HI, This an most of the early Cokers have been discusses over the years there are lots of arguments about who go where but there is really only one line. for some early research see the book, Info on the COKER's came from "Southside Virginia Famileis" by John Bennett Boddie, 929.3755 (he had 3 volumes) See this web sit back to 1990 and some early research where records were produced and copied. This will has been discussed before. Hope this helps. dwight the will says 1759 not 1780 thats why i wonder but i also found on laterday saint sight where it says father of claiborne coker and dennis coker was john cocker and margaret hadfield in this region of england matley mottram, cheshire, england now i dont know if that is just listing the places where born married or what but this is first time i got anything off of lds sight that shows name for father. i find it odd that will is written in 1759 and names a joseph and then finding this on lds sight name john as a father too. it leads we have not had before so i question whether someone has take a will into their usage that may not be theirs line. gary ----- Original Message ----- From: Dwight Stipes Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 8:12 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 HI, Is this the Joseph you are trying to connect to Joseph Coker (Son of John and Priscilla (Geddings) Coker). Hello; Everyone; Thanks for the information but, excuse me, I see that this is not the direct line of my Great Great grandfather WILLIAM WARREN COKER. but, they are related in the older generation from Carolina. The names are handed down for generations , names like Joseph, William, Drury and Thomas. I see you have a Dicey bn abt. 1833, Warren COKER had a sister who married Wm. Wheelis aka Wheelas aka Wheelock in Washington Al in 1836. Warren's wife and oldest son, my great grandfather, JOSEPH JAMES COKER, named WARREN COKER'S brothers and sisters in an interview with an newspaper editor who wrote a history book of North West Texas in 1909. The people named in the BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH were GREEN COKER, SEBE (C. B. my note), GALLANT who lived and died in Waynes County Ms., GETTIE AKA GETTY (unknown gender), DIADEM and Mrs. WHEELIS who we have identified as DICEY COKER WHEELIS / WHEELAS mentioned above. I am the one whose chart is on Vol 6, # 933 of BRODERBUND World Trees. I have since found errors in my own information but as far as I am concern right now there is another Ceburn / Seaborn whose initial is B. that belongs to my WARREN's line. I have just found GALLANT's family, and his initial is C on his Confederate records not O as printED in the RECORDS OF THE ARMY OF THE CONFEDERACY. A brother - in - law of my mother's brother was doing his research on his TAYLOR family back in the 1980's and he deuced that Drury Coker of the 1820 Wilcox Al. Census was our WARREN'S PARENT. He was from S. C. and I believe the son of Drewry Coker son of Drewry Coker son of Joseph as named in Joseph's will along with "Y" John and Thomas and Calvin. I still contend this is Warren's father, while my second cousin, a great granddaughter, Anna Coker Davis contends Joseph Dempsey COKER is Warren's Father. I contend there are some errors on the part of the researchers who have turned charts into LDS familysearch because they did not have our Warren's information naming Greene, Ceburn B. mispelled as Sebe, Gallant, Getty, Diadem and Dicey aka Mrs. Wheelis / Wheeless information. I am working to clear this up now concerning the Drury factor. and the Seaborn / Ceburn B. Coker from Ms. who served in the Ms Inf. Since GALLANT LIVED in the Ms borderland county of WAYNE ACROSS from CHOCTAW CO.. AL I BELIEVE HIS BROTHER, Sebe AKA C. B. went there with him., but joined the Ms inf. while GALLANT join the Ala while they were in Wayne co on a mission. Our WARREN COKER stated on the census from Al. 1850, and 1860; Texas 1870 and 1880 that his father was born in Ga. but I believe that is in error that simply his father was born in S. C. about 1795 give or take a year or so. Drury COKER was most likely bn. in S. C.. WARREN COKER further stated his mother was born in LA abt 1803 to 1805 on the Al. and Tx. censuses. WARREN COKER married NANCY ELIZABETH WILLBANKS in SUMTER co. AL. in 1840, daughter of W. W. Willbanks who lived two household down from one ELISHA COKER, whose SON, ELIJAH married one JANETTE WILLBANKS. I believe this ELISHA COKER could be a relative of WARREN COKER who perhps he was visiting when he met great great grandmother Nancy WILLBANKS. My WARREN lived in CHOCTAW CO./ SUMTER/WASHINGTON CO. after his marriage in 1845, his oldest three children where born there. Choctaw Co. was taken from lands taken out of SUMTER CO AND WASHINGTON CO AL. SUMTER was made out of the CHOCTAW cession. Warrer and Nancy bought land in the St. Stephen's dist. GALLANT C. COKER's stated in his military papers that he was born in CHOCTAW CO. AL., but I believe he may have meant he lived there before he moved across the state line to WAYNES co. Ms. I am sending for SEABORN B. COKER's Army of the Confederacy military records as soon as I receive the proper application form. yes, I know of the COKER MAILING LIST AND THE FORUM as I am an old cousin and a member of the mailing list back in 1998. I have rejoined, as my address changed and I am just now realized I hadn't notified the list. Thank all of you for writing, and if you find any information concerning the people I named I would appreciated a post. Becky and list; Thank you for your suggestion. I feel that since there are so many given and surnames mis - spelled that the C. B. , Seaborn was given the nick of Sebe, but, it is strange that it was used in legal papers and since I found Seaborn B. on the Ms. Army of the Confederacy roster , I believe he is my WARREN COKER's brother, until proved otherwise. I see there were three Seaborns about the same age, Seaborn B. COKER , Ms.; SEABORN S. COKER and SEABORN C. COKER OF AL AND ARK.. SEABORN and Gallant C. COKER were both living across the Al line in Ms. They both were said to be born in the area about the time Al. was taken out of Ms. Territory and became a state. They didn't move , the States and counties boundaries did. These are the brothers and sisters my Great Great grandmother NANCY WILLBANKS Coker knew in Al before coming to Tx.., Sebe, Greene, Gallant, Getty , Diadem and Mrs. Wheelis (Dicey Coker). Warren COKER died in 1892, she died in 1912, the author of the book had her death in 1902 but my mom had records of her death as 1912. She lived with her daughter, Nancy Elizabeth, aka Lizzie Coker (Mrs. Jackson Gage) Crawford according to the 1900 Tx. soundex. I have not proven G. B. aka Greene B was our Green Coker yet so would like input on this. I do hope people on the list will assist me as I have given so much of mine information on that C. D.. and personal contact. I have read every post to the list that is in the archives of the list and forum. Plus, I am backing up and researching my previous information again. I found that Seaborn (Sebe) Coker hasn't been proven as the husband of Amanda Tucker on several posts to the list. What is the proof here? Just a similar name of a descendant or is there a bible or marriage record or a military record or census naming her as his wife ??? In that case, then Dicey Dial was one of the wives of Old John Coker S. C. since my WARREN COKER had a sister called DICEY aka La DICIA WHICH IS FRENCH or SPANISH. Her mother was born in La or Louisana Territory. My grandmother, Preal Coker Tarr once mentioned her mother was bn in New Orleans now I believe it was her greatgrandmother, Warren Coker's mother. If anyone on the list has a copy of Seaborn B. Coker's Ms. Army of the confederacy military records I would appreciate a copy. It should tell where he was born. Gallant's and Warren's did. There was an legend that WARREN Coker's family was part Cherokee from the eastern Tribe and his Father was in the 1833 Trail of Tears out of AL so I began my genealogy research years ago to prove this but all the reports came back negative. I even paid a Cherokee researcher , Mrs Mooney in Oklahoma to do a search. I was so sure because when we live in Blount co Tn in 1972, my parents came to visit and we went to Cherokee S. C. to search their records but it was a week - end and the offices were closed but we did find the Museum open and around the walls were pictures of past chiefs but only their Cherokee names, Many of these men features favored a picture my four Uncles . This was why I begun my genealogy research with my COKER line, we needed to prove our indian blood line so our children could benefit from their Native American heritage. We may be descend from the Choctaw nation but have found no records of yet. But, still think Cherokee, Joseph Dempsey COKER was not the only Coker to have married into the early five civilized tribes. Becky, I do appreicate your suggestions, yes, I realized that Sebe was a nick, but it could also be C. B. Sorry, if I seem to be rambling but this all is connceted. I feel we must look at the whole picture not one thread at a time. No, my William Henry's parents were William Joseph and Armanda. Sorry
The Joseph Coker, son of John and Priscilla Coker was in Surry County, North Carolina in 1781. beth, only problem i see of this is where is link that the one in surry county is the right one to this will becuase there also is a joseph in same time span that dies in 1774/75 that is in chathom nc region. That is why so many are feuding over this area of history cause one clan of cokers says one thing another says another thing. only proof of joseph is the court asking millie or milsey to bring orphan's isaac abraham jacob and malichi to court to prove they are joseph sons. that happened in 1774 was finished 1775. now give that context that would make this joseph about the right age as that will you posted and also is why everyone is trying to find broken links. according to this will this joseph would be only be 22 if he serve on court in 1781 if he is the one in will to me that is questionable. due to how many kids that are mentioned. The joseph I would believe is this one was roughly born 1740. Do you happen to know the age of the joseph you have date born and date of death beth? am curious to see this because given that will gives the heirs the stuff right them give the thought they are all adults at this time not children. gary coker ----- Original Message ----- From: Beth Gay Sent: Saturday, April 20, 2002 8:12 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 The Joseph Coker, son of John and Priscilla Coker was in Surry County, North Carolina in 1781. notsharon, here is reason your not fitting well their were two dennis cokers. claiborn or claybourne depending on who did census and how well their spelling was lol. clay bourn coker had a brother named dennis coker he's the one who married sallid or sally jones as your seeing it. the other dennis coker is the son of claybourn coker and married a sarah clanton they this is shown in the morgan county 1850 census unknow township you will see on that census where claybourn and elizabeth hale are listed, but at bottom you will see dennis and sarah still living in claybourne's house at that time. Notice dennis is only 21 here and in far right box you see that him and sarah a. clanton were just married. later in 1860 census morgan county illinois pg 235 dennis is in own house then having emily, amanda francis, robert thomas, and emma e. as kids but their actually is one more born after this name riley h. coker he shows up in the 1870 census. the dennis and claybourn or claiborne that were ! brother were married in indiana but live in around morgan county jacksonville township area. in 1880 though the younger dennis picks up and moves to kansas territory in larned kansas. region. there are deeds where is shows dennis and sarah coker buying ups lots in the town dating from 1880 to 1885 plus it show where sarah a coker signed the reception log i am guessing this was for payment of having deeds drawn up on buying land because next to her name is a cost of $1.00. the 1880 census I have show robert thomas being there in 1880 as a farm laborer. an another 1880 census if i can find it has the younger kids emma and riley with dennis coker. riley h coker in 1887 and in 1888 riley h. coker had two deeds for buying acreage in the area of larned then was not a town but county wasn't either it known today as pawnee county kansas. In one dee it shows riley being from hodgeman county which if you get map you will see they butt up against each other. Robert thomas coker marr! ies a margaret eliza bowman and has 8 children the first 5 die from diptheria and are buried in in same cemetary as robert thomas and wife but in different lots they lived in hodgeman county oround riverside kansas the cemetary is calle riverside as well but is in ness county which is north of hodgeman county. the 1900 census for valley township whis is in hodgeman shows robert with last three children that lived fredelia grace coker , walter vance coker and fred lawerence coker. also there is 1900 censuses in pawnee county that shows andrew kensler with wife amanda francis but she is now going by francis a. instead but you will also see a maggie and effie all the way down to dennis coker are kin. effie marries a charles seely but divorce him from what i gathered from a decendant of effie she then marries a reddman and moves to arizona. dennis coker in 1900 census is now a widow his wife is buried in larned cemetary ne 5 corner. he later dies in arizonia after going out to help effie take care of her children because husband is dead and she has for kids this was told to me by betty hammer she is a decendant of effie from what i have learned from her or a decendant of amanda francis if i get this right effie was one of amanda's children. anyway dennis dies in pheonix az roughly with out glancing at paperwork in 1906 or 1907. How I figured out how to seperate the early census in illnoise was by looking at age differens when claybourne and dennis were there they were in 55 to 53 while the younger dennis was only in early 20's. though they are actually all related. hope this helps you out some. dwight stipes my aunts and brad coker and betty hammer help me get it worked out when i first read it on illinoise wesight they say their were 3 dennis cokers but after i looked at it i only see two what i think happed in one day younger dennis was at work cause he's marked as a laborer the two weeks or months later you see him in claybourn household census. this i think is what cause the confusion. gary eugene coker ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] Sent: Friday, April 19, 2002 8:31 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [Coker] Re: Cokers in Southwest Indiana This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list.
