Hi, Eveline I am in agreement with most that you, we should not use one source as fact and there are lots of errors in them. I rely on Census they are flawed. Most Archive data is of original source and should be fact. These are the sources that should be quoted, I agreed. Not all info available is clear and truly totally exact but mostly true. I try to quote a source of Fact as a form of information that I pass on, most of the time, if I have it. I don't put fact to Old wives tales or family stories they soon prove out to be less than half true. I spend most of my time checking family lines, sources is what I have been researching and sorting through now. I am trying to match all Cokers to Census, Cemeteries,Wills, etc. Dwight ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eveline Crocker" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 8:01 PM Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 > Dwight and all; > I know of Mr. Boddie's books and research. Still trying to find father of Ezekiel Coker borned 1813 in NC and bonded out in 1825 in Greene County TN to a John Dailey. If anyone has inforamtion on this line of Cokers, I would appreciate having it. Thanks. gg granddaughter Sandra
Dwight, I read an article a while back in which the writer said one of her terms is STB..."said to be." This is a great idea in my mind. The viewer then has the ability to understand that this is not necessarily fact..BUT...it may be information that needs to have some follow-up. This is particularly important for people that are researching areas greatly removed from their locality. I live in Oregon...most of my research is in South Carolina and Pennsylvania... getting my hands on primary source material is tough. I have made several trips to SC and have done quite well but were there more time and finances I would be able to dig up even more I think. rich, dont worry I have yet to find anything from LDS to be right yet but definately will throw what information I find into my research file mainly to explore... When I looked at the claybourne/ claiborne I looked at the age on census I believ it only one claybourne because age and place where both are from says GA. the two dennis I have one is the uncle of the other with the same GA state and age is close to claiborne. Spelling back then from what I have seen was done more sound rather then being correct. I have sent for the will of claybourned coker in jacksonville so maybe that will clear that up a bit. gary coker ----- Original Message ----- From: Dwight Stipes Sent: Monday, April 22, 2002 7:23 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 Gary, Use only the films of actual archive records. Thank you, Gary, But, Please, I do not desire to get into that discussion, but since you asked. I am both CROCKER and COKER,. COKER FROM MY MOTHER'S MOTHER. Some claim Crockers are Scottish but the first thing I do is research the meaning of each of my ancestors surnames. The Coker means red Clay named after the Castle Coker in Somerset England in the 10th century which belonged to the Earl of MANDERVILLE family, who in fact was NORMAN and fought with William the Conquer in the BATTLE OF ABBY. One ROBERT de MANDERVILLE changed his name to ROBERT de COKER about 1275. source:" A Dictionary of English and Walsh Surnames" ; "SURNAMES ARE THE FOSSILS OF SPEECH" and A good history of WEST COKER IN SOMERSET ENGLAND may be found at <http;//west.coker.net/history2.htm>. Steve Coker also has done research on the COKER name and placed it on the COKER-L Sat. Mar. 1998. You will find it on the Coker-L archives on Rootsweb.com. Also, a Dr. Robert E. Coker of S. C. complied a Booklet entitled "COKER" OUR NAME THE PLACE" in March 1950. I think Dr. Coker is deceased now. but I have copy of the booklet. Also, another source is COKER GENEALOGICAL and HISTORICAL SKETCH by ROOTS RESEARCH BUREAU, LTD. MANUSCRIPT # 562. The CROCKER surname is similar. The book, "The Norman People and Their Existing Descendants in British Dominions and the United States" states northmen of Danish Connexion with ANGLO-SAXON which made up England - Saxon _ Dane & Norman; 879 AD -- Danish Dominion of Saxon England. Crocker (Eng.) Croaker (Norman) or de Crocherce from crocea, a cross (Ducange) crocearius, a cross - bearer, Simon de Crocherce and William Crockare mentioned in England --- 1272 A D (Rot. Hundren) Norman families may be included. John de Crochere Held lands from de Pomery, Devon, at time of Henry the I. From "HISTORICAL SOUTHERN FAMILIES" volumne II, John Bennett Boddie 1958. CROCKER of the Isle of Wight, "A Mrs. Myrtle P. Handley of Birmingham, Al. who most probable is an CROCKER Descendant of MARY EULA, daughter of WILLIAM EUGENE , son of WILSON, SON OF DRUE (DRURY) , son of ANTHONY, SON of WILLIAM, son of ANTHONY, ancsentor in the Isle of Wight Va.. DRURY CROCKER MOVED his family to DALLAS co. AL. about 1780. According to Ms. Handley; "the name, "CROCKER" is SCOTTISH. A CROCKER or CROKER was a maker of crocks, orginally large barrel shaped jars. The name, CROCKER, is similar in meaning to that of a potter, It is an ancient family in England (see WESTCOTT'S DEVONSHIRE by G. OLIVER and P. JONES p. p. 550. Also, THE HARLEIAN SOCIETY, vols VI - 78, LX - 57". We can see in the first paragraph, there is a difference of opinion, pertaining to the origin as well as the spelling of the name of de CROCHERCE aka CROCKER. We may assume that "The Norman People and Their Existing Descendants in British Dominions and the United States" is more recent information on the family of CROCKER name than that was available to Mrs. HANDLEY or BODDIE in the 1950s. CROCKER COAT OF ARMS; According to BURK'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF HERALDY, the CROCKER arms was "Argent: a Chevron engrailed between three raven, Sable". This is now combined with another families arms since the last one to inherit it was a daughter and her husband's arms was combined with hers. It may be found at <http://geocities.com/texannusa36/thehouseofcrocker.html> As I mentioned above, Steve Coker wrote an interesting item about the Coker name which included facts about the COKER ARMS of Three Leopards. Sorry, this is so very long, but, it has good history and genealogy concerning my CROCKER and COKER surnames that you may use. Thank you, kindly. Gary, This just goes to prove why LDS site advises you to double check the information contributed to their sight. And, again, proves why I am double checking what I myself have posted or found on my Line or what others send me. Dwight and all; I know of Mr. Boddie's books and research. I have found he has been proven mistaken. He is writing mostly about the area and people who his Boddies knew. It is true we may have stem from one COKER, Robert but others came in after him. We are needing to know which son we stem from to have a true pedigree. And, some of the older researchers made errors is why all researchers ask us to double check their source. I send that Coker information to World Family Trees and I amy have been mistaken as to my Warren Coker's parents, but all indication points to Drury Coker of Ga who was counted on the 1820 Wilcox County Al census. He was born in S. C. in 1755, to Drury son Drury son of Old Joseph Coker. These old Wills and land grants and court records is what we need to prove our ancestor, even when people like Boddie publish books I refer to their sources more than what they write. It does not hurt to discuss old items again as someone might throw a new light on it. Yes, check the mail - list archives for information, which I myself have done before I wrote my current query. New members may not be aware of the old discussion in the archives. Thank, Dwight, That does help by naming the source of the Seborn Coker and Amanda J. Tucker union. Now, if he was age 23, then he must have be born in 1823, it should tell which state his parents' were born. Since he was born in Ar , he isn't my W. Warren or Gallant C. COKER's brother , Sebe, I believe he was also born in Al as they were. eveline, lol believe me I do check sources have already fixed 75 years of linage that is messed up by gene pro lol. but at at same cross roads as most one way of linage for me says abraham is claiborned and dennis cokers dad the other source says a john cocker from cheshire england is father. makes me wonder lol. If there is records that could prove that would be fine but my decendant dennis coker not the one i just said that is his uncle lol shows that his parents were from geogia in kansas census before he was in illinoise. so makes me wonder how lds sight has him straight to 1723 england. but maybe the gap between 1774 to 1723 is actually setting in england history. gary coker ----- Original Message ----- From: Eveline Crocker Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 5:08 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 Gary, This just goes to prove why LDS site advises you to double check the information contributed to their sight. Yes, there are a lot of records that are miss used. There are a lot of Facts & Genealogies of Families that have been fabricated. Every thing has to be checked. We did several lines back in 1995 some of these were full of data an sources on the Coker site. There is a repeat of names in the coker lines every other seem to have duplication of names every 40-50 years the names will repeat. Some repeat every generation. Different branches brothers. You may be having trouble with Uncle or Father, Son or Grandfather Duplication of names. You are trying to connect Joseph who died (the Will 1774) names wife Milly and sons Isaac, Jacob, Abraham and Malachi Coker. That has been research so much and everyone went "Brain Dead" afterwards :}:} No exact answers or results. dwight i found something odd the geneology thru latter day saints show claiborne and dennis parents as john cocker and margaret hadfield when you look at tree it doesnt even show a joseph coker or abraham it goes straight to the two name the film # 537220 page #28 makes me wonder now if their were not two different claibornes and two different dennis cokers in illinois now meaning the claiborne and claybourne thing is how trusting is the latter day saint sight at being true to form? gary ----- Original Message ----- From: Dwight Stipes Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 9:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Coker] John and Priscilla Coker, Brunswick Co, Va. - 1759 Yes, there are a lot of records that are miss used.
