"Colorado Post Offices" has a photo of a letter turned in to the Denver City office of the Central Overland - California and Pikes Peak Express company which was date stamped Denver City, K.T., October 16, 1860. It arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri on the 23rd. The last date is a New York City directory service cancellation October 26th, 1860 when it was forwarded to Rockland, Maine. Compare that 10 day Denver to New York transit time to the "5-7 business days" that is the quoted ground delivery standard over the same route 141 years later. And it only cost three cents to mail.
