I would like to publicly say THANK YOU to Carmen and Lois for their monetary donations to help with the obituary card index. THANK YOU ladies, this is a really worthwhile project and we need all the help we can get. Big hugs to both of you! I am still working on the baptismal entries and just finished the "T's". Boy, there was a bunch of those! Please remember if you have anything to add to our pages, just let me know. And if you want photos put on your Family Group Sheets, send them to me and I will get them posted. Also, you are each invited to critique our web pages and make suggestions or comments on what we have, or what we don't have. Fall is on the way! Hugs to all, Karen

I was looking through the Huerfano County surnames. I wanted to know who who posted the Family group sheet information on Juan Jose Abeyta, Jose Manuel Abeyta and Miguel Antonio Martinez? Thanks, Toni
Ben, I did find one of Jose Gabriel and Maria Manuela's oldest son, Jose Raphael Chaves who was born 1859. He is listed in the 1900 census with his wife and one son living in Precinct 50, Pueblo County. I didn't find him after that in the cenus records. I hope this little bit of information helps. Gregg
Hello Ben, The State did not start keeping records as early as 1881, that's why they didn't have anything for you. Before writing to any State find out how early their records start, or you'll just be wasting your money requesting something that doesn't exist. In your case, your best bet is the churches, specifically St. Mary's Catholic Church in Walsenburg. Chavez Plaza was located south east of Gardner, Colorado. The burial record at http://www.kmitch.com/Huerfano/chavplacem.htm gives his parents as Juan Chavez and Clara Vigil. I would suggest that you submit a Family Group Sheet on the family so we can post it on the web page and hopefully someone else researching the same family will contact you. In the marriages there are several children of Jose Gabriel Chavez's listed at http://www.kmitch.com/Huerfano/marc.html Hope this helps. Happy Hunting! Poor Merri, sounds like you have quite a mess there LOL. Yes it is fun to share our ancestors stories, and we all enjoy it. (putting on my glasses so I can look intelligent) Here is a link to the Brazos: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/BB/rnb7.html and one on the Trinity: http://www.trinityriverrafting.com/history.html Our Land Patents are here: http://www.kmitch.com/Huerfano/patentabc.htm But I didn't find him there, which doesn't mean he didn't have land, he could have bought it from someone or "squatted" it for awhile and then moved on. But if he was here in 1860 I doubt if you will find any land records of his in Huerfano County. What we really need is a listing of his children and try to pinpoint where they were born. Where did he come "from"? I really had to laugh when I read your note. If the whole family died and he's your ancestor, how did you get here? Sorry, I'm feeling giggly today. Maybe you aren't descended from him? About that time frame you might want to check Mora County, NM for any records. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more and please do let us know if you find anything. Good luck in your search! I've just begun to research in Huerfano Co and it didn't take long for me to realize how important the history of the county line formation would be!! I'm trying to pin point the location of the death of an ancestor in 1868. Family legend has several tid bits that I'm trying to piece together. Here is a sketch of redundancies that I have picked up from recollections of ancestors...nothing documented...about my Thomas J. ALLEN : --He 'went to Texas' about 1861 --He 'went to Colorado" looking for gold about 1860 --He 'was the first man to have a claim near Pikes Peak' (of course that could be 200 miles!) --He was with Nebraska Goldstake #1 --Early 1860's he owned land in Huerfano Co purchased from Prudience Bacia for $400 (Land office request was refused, but told me I was welcome to look for myself.) --Died in 1868 on his way to visit daughter (near Dallas) when the whole family contracted typhoid and were buried at camp beside the river --Buried near in the Trinity River basin --Buried near the Brasos River Okay...does anyone know of published land records of Huerfano land in 1860's? I'd love to know just where that piece of land is located now....and then. Maybe it was part of Texas or Kansas then. Do either the Brasos or Trinity Rivers have tributaries that run near southeastern Colorado? I'm not having any luck with internet maps. I'm so CONFUSED!! Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks. Hi everyone, I just posted a new family group sheet for the Juan Quintana family. This one is different. Please would all of you go take a look at it and let me know what you think. http://www.kmitch.com/Huerfano/groupsheets/fgs75.html If you want yours to look like this just let me know. Karen

Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Colorado in 1860's cut into two parts? Everything south of Pueblo part of New Mexico Territory and everything north of Pueblo part of Kansas Territory? Nancy
I thought I should mention this as a follow-up in regard to my previous post Re: Allens of Huerfano. Most of you have no doubt researched in this county much more than I have, but if you haven't reviewed the maps and evolution of the states/territories and counties in Colorado for awhile, you might find the following worthwhile in your 19th century research. I sure have. It's a great history lesson. Maps of the changes in Colorado land can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~coyuma/comaps/ First, click on the Univ/Texas/Austin's "US Territorial Maps" at the 10 year intervals Then, click on Stanwyck's "County Evolution" map and look what happens to Huerfano Co Merri

Robert, BTW, her headstone reads: Lamb, Agnes --- 7 Jan 1883 Daughter of C. & M. Lamb, Age 10m 11d
Robert, I have the listing for the cemetery as the index of photos on my Masonic Cemetery site, but unfortunately I don't have a photo of Agnes Lamb's headstone for you to view. I could actually have it, but it's not yet posted by either Karen or me yet. I also have a copy of the "cemetery book" maintained by the cemetery caretaker, but it's packed away in a box somewhere :/ (I recently moved to Canada from the US). I'll keep an eye out for it as I (far too slowly) unpack, and when I find it I'll let you know. It has every location of every grave plot, and is current as of 2001. I'll also look thru my not-yet-posted photos and see if there's one for Agnes. Here is a very good short bio on Geronimo. http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/naind/html/na_013300_geronimo.htm and here: http://www.linecamp.com/museums/americanwest/western_names/geronimo/geronimo.html http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/apache/chiricahua.htm From everything I read I deduce the fact that Geronimo (Chiricahua indian) was never in the Colorado area, so I wonder if you are looking in the right area to find the little Gramacita's grave. The closest he would have come to Colorado would have been Ojo Caliente, NM. But most of his activity took place in southern NM, Arizona, and Mexico. The most important indian Chiefs in the Huerfano area were Querno Verde and Chief Ouray. Querno Verde was of the Comanche nation and Chief Ouray was of the Ute nation. The Navajos, Cheyenne's, and Arapahos also ventured into Colorado, but I don't find any history of the Chiricahuas coming into Colorado. But I do stand to be corrected if anyone else has different information. This gives you some idea of the geography involving some of the people you mention. I wonder if you should be looking in the Ojo Caliente area. What leads you to Huerfano County? If the family was in fact connected with Geronimo, it would be the NM area, but you say that her marriages are recorded in Trinidad. What records do you have to connect her with Huerfano County? I guess you can see that you have really sparked my interest here (grin). That usually happens when someone gives us a good story here on the list. And thank you for the compliments on our web site, we do try hard! According to Oral history from different branches of our family they all tell the same story that Maria Matilde and a son Alejandro Chaves were killed running from the army according to my cousin that lived with my Great Grandmother she said my Great Grandmother who was around 5 years old told her she watched her mother and brother killed, then her Father Juan Jose Chaves took my Great Grandmother to live with her Grandmother Maria Quirina Samora so he could avenge his families death and ride with Geronimo who was his brother in-law. He never returned. Just a little interesting LOL! But I am not sure these are the facts as I said it's all oral history. I am sure there are tidbits of truth mixed in with lots of embellishment..... But both the Johnson's, Samora's and my family all tell the same story and they have not seen each other in decades. My take on the whole thing is that all sides of the family spent so much energy hiding who they were that they lost each other and I am the instrument being used to reunite us all. Before I started researching I had no knowledge of the Johnson's or the Samora's now I am in phone contact with them all and have gained an entirely new family! It's been a blessing and a pleasure to reconnect with them.
