    1. Twas the Night Before Christmas
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. Twas the Night Before Christmas 'Twas the night before Christmas, and everyone slept, Except the Genealogist, who out of bed crept, To check the computer and regular mail box, To heck with the ties, and chocolates and sox. Everyone else is sleeping like a log. Oh, oh, be careful, I fell over the dog. Whoops, just listen, what's that on the roof? Santa has caught me, being a goof. I'll hide under the desk, till he goes away; If he caught me up, what would he say? Hurry up Santa, what did you bring? Drop it and run--let me see everything! I want Aunt Sadie, and great Uncle Bert, Also Grandma Blitzen-that wouldn't hurt. Cousin Gertie's a mystery, where did she go? And old Uncle Cyrus, who walked really slow. Will I ever find them, in the next 20 years? Or have they disappeared?-that's one of my fears. Wow! Santa's gone, it took him a while; Why did he laugh, instead of just Smile? Oh, he left me some papers! what do they say? Great Uncle Bert fell into the Bay! He was drinking vanilla and dancing like crazy, When all of a sudden, things began to get hazy. Well, that settles that, I'll quit looking for him, Why in the world, couldn't he swim? Aunt Sadie was a sinner, and she ran away, With the Parson, no less-what can I say? Grandma Blitzen was bitten by a big yellow snake, She picked it up-and thought it was a rake. Cousin Gertie ran a bar, away out in the West, A stray bullet got her--no bullet proof vest. Uncle Cyrus was a hermit, in a cave on the coast, Threw his money in the ocean, or so he did boast. So, thanks for the answers, Santa, my friend, I'll quit looking for them, it's been a dead end. I'll go back to bed and turn out the light, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night. --Anonymous

    1. 1918 Draft Registration Index
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. In 1917 and 1918, approximately 24 million men, (98% of men present in America), born between 1873 and 1900 completed draft registration cards. During these two years, three registration days were held in each district where the registrant completed the registration card. Information found on these cards generally included, among other information, birth date, birth location, father's birthplace, and the address of next of kin. This civilian registration is often confused with induction into the military; however, only a small percentage of these men were actually called up for military service. It should be noted that aliens were required to register but were not subject to induction into the American military. Persons already in the military did not register. Recent Italian emigrants wrote their last names first, resulting in some cards being filed under first names. Cards of Hispanics may be filed under their mother's maiden name surname if the registrant gave both parents' surnames. Also, men who resided in British territories sometimes listed themselves simply as British citizens without noting their origin in Canada, Australia, Ireland, Jamaica, etc. Illiterate men were unable to spell their names and birth location, so researchers should be quite flexible in searching for the spelling of names of illiterate men. Huerfano County has 4,422 registration, and you can see them all here: http://www.kmitch.com/Huerfano/drafta.html ENJOY! Karen

    2. Nancy Godfrey
    3. Just for reference, this is called "phishing", in internet slang. It's quite common with major sites like ebay and paypal, and most major banks have had it done to them. I probably get one or two of these a week, and the first thing I do is forward the message to the company in question. Ebay and Paypal have dedicated email addresses to send this stuff to, and I'm sure others do also. If you get one, check the real company's site for the proper place to forward these messages. Forwarding them the emails helps them track down those doing the phishing, so it's definitely worth the hassle. Also, virtually all legitimate sites will NEVER ask for personal information in an email, or via clicking a link in an email. Any commercial site that asks for this kind of info in an email is immediately suspect, legitimate or not, and they'll soon find themselves without MY business. 2. Karen Mitchell
    3. FYI ----- Original Message ----- From: "Taylor Hayes" hi all, i just watched a report on cnbc & thought i should pass on to you. if you already know about it sorry for the repeat....many of you know i have been a victim of identity theft (not from this type of thieve but nevertheless!), & i'm hyper sensitive to it but this still scared me. internet identity thieves are sending out emails that look exactely like your bank or stores that you frequent & who have your email address to send you offers etc. (some may be ones you have a relationship w/already, some may be offers for a new store or bank, all are common & recognizable). the emails offer you a deal or info on a deal & ask you to click on the link & go to their website & when there you are asked to give personal info. the website you are taken to is exactly like the one you know & think you are going to but you are not. you are going to a site set up exactly like it but it's set up to steal your acct. info, passwords etc. the reporter on cnbc had done it herself thinking it was her own bank! you would think you can tell the difference but apparently these are very sophisticated & the two companies that the reporter mentioned were ebay & bank of america. the fraudulent sites even have the proper disclaimers on the bottom of the site....& they look the same. SO, the expert they had on suggests when you get this type of offer to delete the email & type in the website yourself, go to it & ck if there is an offer that is real & than you can take advantage of it/do your banking, shop etc. in safety. microsoft is coming out w/a new version soon that will have some help towards this (when you click on a link sent to you, a message will pop up that you are not on the actual site you thought you were going to) but it will not catch them all & the thieves will eventually figure out a way around this as well. SO, again, always best to delete the offer email & go to your favorite websites by typing in your address yourself & only giving your personal info after having done that, rather than following a link in an email. hope this was helpful & safe internetting to you all! taylor

    1. Gifting Descendants
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. What a great idea, from Rootsweb Review Gifting Descendants By Carolyn Taby Larkins As gifts to nieces and cousins, I've used the sets of Russian dolls, where each figure opens up to reveal another, until they get too small. I write the name of the child on the bottom of the smallest doll, her mother on the next, her mother's mother on the third, then her grandmother's mother -- ending with the earliest mother for the maternal line I have documented. The larger dolls have room for much more information and I add marriage dates and spouses to them. To make the names visible, I "write" or "carve" the name with a pin and then use permanent ink to finish the job. These are definitely conversation pieces as well as reminders of history. **************************

    1. Taking Photography 101
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. From Rootsweb Review Taking Photography 101 By Rick Van Dusen Arnold Chamove is right about using your digital camera. However, on my long-awaited visit to the New York State Archives (3,000 miles from home), I learned the hard way some lessons about this: 1. Definitely use the macro setting. 2. Make sure you have camera set to take high-resolution photos. 3. Don't count on the tiny viewer to verify your pix are good; if possible, upload to a computer to see the images in large format. Not learned the hard way, but it would be a good idea to use a tripod. Before I try again to use the camera in this way, I'm going to do the following: 1. Make sure I know how to use the camera, change the settings, etc. 2. Practice with the camera, try different settings, distances, etc. 3. Be prepared to set the camera on a tripod and measure the distance to the object so it's the same as what worked in practice. 4. Have my laptop, camera software and cable with me to verify the pictures are good. BTW, I got one fairly good image. *****************************

    1. 12-6-2005 Progress report
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. HI all, As most of you know, I take a break from Nov 1 to Jan 15. This year I'm trying, but it's not happening LOL. Okay, let's see what's been going on. Louise has finished her end of the data input on the Obituary index cards. THANK YOU so very much Louise for all the hours you put in on this project. I hope all of the Huerfano County researchers can appreciate the time and effort you have spent, I know I sure do! The letters A through J, and U, W-Z are all done and posted. The rest are only waiting to be proofed and then I can post them also. So I don't expect it to be much longer before this project is done. And of course, we have Dick to thank also. Without him this would not have happened! THANK YOU Dick. Louise is now back on the Obituaries, adding to them and getting them ready for another posting. She is breaking the pages down even more and hopefully they will load faster. If any of you request obits from the library, PLEASE contribute them to the Obituary database. In this way, the pages will continue to grow, you will be honoring your ancestors, and also preserving those obits for generations to come. Louise has dedicated so very many hours and expertise to this project as our Coordinator, it's the least we can do to help her out. All you have to do is type up the obit, including the date and name of paper and send it to Louise at LAdams2341@aol.com or to me at km1109@aculink.net , either one of us can handle them from this end. This morning I posted 4 more Oral Interviews: Alfredo Archuleta Ermer Andreatta Maria Batuello Neal Baysinger Again, we have Dick to thank for these also, as he has been scanning and doing the OCR, then I proof them. We are now tossing around ideas to distribute the rest of the interviews so we can get some help getting them done and online. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have them ALL online? I know all of you could appreciate that. It can happen if we get enough volunteers. I will be letting you know in January how this is going to be done and will ask for your help at that time. No one does much during the Holidays so we'll wait until January to get this project rolling. But keep it in mind because I'm depending on all of you to help get this done. Our Taylor is still working on extracting the obituary data for the cemetery and veterans pages. She has really been a trooper. When she finishes her current assignment she has offered to pick up any stragglers that we haven't done yet. If all of you remember, we started this project over a year ago and she has been relentless ever since. THANK YOU Taylor! We have a new contributor. Theresa Bright sent in a 1914 class photo and graduation announcement from the La Veta Union High School. My apologies to Theresa for not getting this posted yet, seems there's not enough hours in the day. It will be up within a couple days, promise! THANK YOU Theresa for your contribution to our web pages. You see, every little bit helps and adds to the history of this area. Anyone else have something to contribute? Come on folks, we need more contributors and volunteers to keep these pages growing. And please remember to thank all of the people that are helping out. The more they're appreciated, the more data you're going to see. If you can't contribute, please try to give moral support to those who do. Dick was here yesterday and by the time he got here I had pulled out containers from the file room (walk-in closet) so we could get to the file cabinets. (He was so happy to see my office a mess.) Well anyway I started pulling out stuff to show him what we need done and there was some I had forgotten about! Geez, I copied some of these records back in early 1980 and hadn't seen them since LOL. Well lo and behold, here was a nice stack of marriage records that we don't have online. Guess it pays to tear things up once in awhile. And beings Dick was so happy to see such a mess he gets to come back over and put it all away again (duckin - runnin). LOL We have some big plans for all this stuff so stay tuned. And please remember, if there's anything you want to see on our pages or any critiques you want to make or suggestions, just let me know. And if any of you are wondering why I've slowed down, well it's this little 2 year old sitting on my lap that's here every day of the week. As 2 year old's go, he's a handful and keeps me jumping. Another one of my blessings! My little pride and joy. If I have left anything out of this report please let me know, and accept my apologies. Hope you all are safe and content through the Season, and my best wishes to one and all. Hugs, Karen
