    3. Greetings to everyone :) Karen, I hope you got my virtual bouquet of flowers? I also wanted to thank you publicly. (If you don't mind...) A few days ago I sent in my roll call list, as well as a few of the massive brick walls I was facing........ Karen, waved her magic wand and they all tumbled down......... maybe tumbled is not the appropriate word........she BLASTED my walls to smithereens!! I can count on one hand, the times that I have been totally speechless in my life..........this was one of them! She sent so much information......I about fainted!! Karen, ( I hate to ask you for any more help) but would you mind letting us (me) know how you are able to blast through these walls?? How did you know where to look?...and after you new where to look where did you find the information?? Are the marriage/ death records on the net?...... Is it all on your pages and I missed it ? Or is it on the NM site.......I would love to know..... I know that you said to search nearby sites.........but Conejos county and Huerfano County are not that close are they?.... What you gave me was nothing short of Magical ! Thank You. Time is precious to me right now (school is in session).......... but how could I possibly deny your request for volunteers to type the obituaries... let me dust off these broken walls lying around.......and I'm ready!!......... Send 10 my way :) A very heartfelt thank you.......... 3. Hi members, I just answered a query from one of our researchers and it reminded me to let all of you know that my records are not exclusive to Huerfano and Taos Counties. In 35 years of research I have amassed quite a few records from other areas as well. The ones that may be important to Huerfano researchers are the: Holy Trinity Marriage records from Trinidad, Las Animas County. These are the early marriages only and date 9-8-1866 to 8-14-1884. If you can't find a marriage in Huerfano County in this time frame you may try these. (Sorry Bobbi, I already checked for your Bachicha's with no luck). Also the Our Lady of Guadalupe records in Conejos. Many of our families were in that area prior to coming to Walsenburg. As you may have noted we just broke through a brick wall on three families in that area. So if any of you have Catholic families that you can't seem to find, we can check these records also. As I sat there, researching the Holy Trinity records, I thought about the extreme desire I have to see all of these records go online for all of you to view. Maybe someday I will have all of them posted for you. I also note that there have been quite a few of the Oral Histories that some of you have ordered. PLEASE consider typing up the ones you have and sending them back for posting to our pages. Someday I would like to see ALL of these online, for free access by all the researchers. And besides that, they make great reading! Even if they are not from your own family, they tell stories of the early years of Huerfano County, which is interesting to all. I have tried scanning them to post them but the clarity just isn't there. So come on folks, if you have ordered a Oral History, please type them up for us so we can get them posted. Now that brings up another project that we may embark upon. As you know, obituaries can be an extremely useful tool in researching your families and rounding them out. What I would like to propose is this: I have several boxes of Huerfano newspaper obits here in the office that I can't seem to find the time to type up and get in the database. I would like to scan them and send out the images for our volunteers to type up and send back for posting. All you would need is the ability to view an image on your computer. What do you think? Do you think this is a worthwhile project for us? How many of you would be willing to do this? If I sent each person on our List 5 obits to type up we could sure make a dent in this stack of papers! And think of all the extra data we could post to our pages. Let me know. I have all kinds of little projects like this that we could do, all I need is volunteers that are willing to give just a little bit of their time. Hope you all have a GREAT day! I'm currently trying to locate information on his ancestors back "across the pond," and one of my big successes this year has been to find information on HIS Grandfather - my GGGGG Grandfather, John Strange - and a picture of my GGGG Grandfather Benjamin Strange. Current roadblocks are mostly not Huerfano-based. 1. Finding anything, anywhere that has information on my GGG Grandfather John McCartney's parents - John McCartney and Ann Forrest of Scotland. 2. Locating information on my maternal line, Truasch from Switzerland. This one's tough because for the language difficulties. Gonna have to relearn my German, I think. Hugs to all! Nancy

    1. [COHUERFA] WHERE HAVE ALL THE MANNERS GONE?
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. WELDING LINKS: WHERE HAVE ALL THE MANNERS GONE? by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gormleym/ One morning at 5 o'clock the phone rang. Even larks, like myself, occasionally sleep in. There is something about an early morning phone call that makes you brace yourself for bad news. However, on this occasion the caller was just a brand-new genealogist guilty of breaking one of the cardinal rules of genealogy: Thou shalt learn thy time zones and make no calls before 7 a.m. or after 9 p.m. -- receiver's time, not yours. While all rookies are going to make mistakes, we genealogists should always use good manners. Many librarians, archivists, and county clerks hate to deal with us -- in person or via e-mail. Do you know why? Because we have a reputation for being Demanding and making asinine requests, such as: -- "Send me all the archival files on the Smith family." -- "I want everything you have on my family." -- "E-mail me right back with the information." Too many newcomers to this hobby assume that everything is on the Internet. It isn't. Get rid of that idea and the attitude that all family history information is free and that someone else is going to do your work for you. Genealogy is much more than collecting a bunch of names, dates, and places and slapping them into your "tree" program. Don't impose on others you have met online by asking them to do free research or solve your genealogical problems. Educate yourself. There are hundreds of free online genealogy lessons and tips. From Cyndi's List you can find such sites: http://www.CyndisList.com/howto.htm#Education Don't ask anyone to send you "all their files" or expect your cousins to share what has taken them 20 years to research, analyze, and compile. They might, but do not expect them to do so. Remember that you are the one asking for help and seeking information. Always offer to pay reimbursement costs or for their time. And, if nothing else, send $5 or $10 when some kind soul sends you copies of photographs, a large envelope of genealogical material, or a GEDCOM. Check out the effective correspondence tips at http://www.CyndisList.com/correspd.htm . When corresponding with others, always offer to exchange information. After all, that's what genealogy is all about. Good manners never go out of style. You will discover that the well-mannered genealogist is also the well-rewarded one. 1. [COHUERFA] COUSINS BY THE DOZENS
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. THE WORM'S EYE VIEW: COUSINS BY THE DOZENS by Beth Maltbie Uyehara [email protected] When I was young, my family attended a church where we were related to everyone but the bats in the belfry, and sometimes I wondered about them. I never could figure out how we all fit together. I just knew that everybody in the congregation outside of my nuclear family seemed to be an aunt, uncle, cousin or some other, even-more-exotic kinsperson. Then I grew up and discovered genealogy, and found that there are rules governing the degrees of kinship. All those baffling terms like, "first cousin once removed" and "double second cousins" follow simple, logical rules that anyone can master. As a random act of genealogical kindness, therefore, I've created a quick guide to relationships. Memorize these simple rules, and you'll never again be at a loss for words when strangers you're related to hug you and say you look just like big ol' Merlie Jean before she got so sick, poor thing, and how come you never write? First cousin This is your first aunt or first uncle's first child. (A first aunt or uncle is defined as your parent's eldest sibling, known technically as the "oldest child." If your parent is the eldest, or an only, child, and you are that parent's eldest, or only, child, then you are your own first cousin, and are probably spoiled rotten as a consequence. I've known plenty like you, and it's not a pretty sight.) Second cousin Your first aunt or uncle's second child, or your second aunt or uncle's first child. (A second aunt or uncle is the second-eldest child of any grandparent; however, if your parent should him- or herself be the second child, then you and your brothers and sisters are second cousins primarily and siblings only secondarily, and only at Thanksgiving. If you should happen to be the second child of two second children -- boy, are you in trouble. Children who are their own double second cousins rarely turn out well.) Third cousin See definition of second cousin, and add one to every number. I'm sure you have caught the drift by now. Let's move on. First-degree cousin A cousin with a black belt. Usually treated with respect by the rest of the family. Double first cousins Identical twin children of your first aunt or first uncle. Doublemint cousins Identical twin cousins who model for chewing gum ads. Double-dip first cousin First cousin who can't decide between chocolate and vanilla. Double-knit first cousin First cousin dressed for "casual Friday." First cousin once removed Your divorced first aunt or first uncle's first child who is now living with said aunt or uncle's ex-spouse. First cousin twice removed Your divorced first aunt or first uncle's first child who is now living with said aunt or uncle's ex-spouse in a different state. First cousin once reproved Obnoxious young relative who inspires such parental comments as, "Why can't you be more like your cousin Myron? He's only had one spanking in his entire life!" First cousin twice reproved Myron's naughty sibling. First cousin once refurbished First cousin with a nose job. First cousin twice refurbished A first cousin with a nose job and his or her "eyes done." First cousin oft renovated What Michael Jackson is to his parents' siblings' children. First cousin once recharged (a) first cousin with a pacemaker, or (b) A first cousin whose lawyer has never heard of double jeopardy. First cousin once deranged, twice deranged, thrice deranged, &c. I can't bear to define these terms, they bring back such painful memories of my family. Let's just say, if you have to ask, you don't have any. Kissing cousin The effusive type. Every family has at least one. Dissing cousin Cousin who talks nasty about the rest of the family behind their backs. Here is an easy way to remember how to combine the "doubles," "triples," etc., with the "removeds" and other "re-" and "de-" cousins. Just multiply all the numbers involved. Thus your double first cousin three-times deranged is, in kinship math, your deranged sixth cousin (2 [double] x 1 [first] x 3 [deranged] = 6). You may get an argument on this from people who do not understand the intricacies of kinship math. Just explain that you saw it on the Internet, so you know it's true. That's all there is to it! Now, test yourself. What degree of kinship exists between the youngest of two children (Child X) of one parent (Parent A) who is a middle child of three, and another parent (Parent B), who is the eldest child of four of a second marriage, and the overly affectionate twin children (Children Y and Z) of Parent A's younger sister (Parent C) who has a pacemaker, a nose job and a fanny tuck, and who is married to an only child (Parent D) who talks nasty about the rest of the family behind their backs, but who has a black belt in judo, so no one complains? (Further necessary information: Child X cannot decide between chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio.) Give up? Child X and Children Y and Z are kissing, dissing, first-degree, triple-dipping, double-third cousins once recharged and twice refurbished. Or, in kinship math, they are 36th cousins (1 x 3 x 2 x 3 x 1 x 2 = 36). Isn't that easy? As to the proper response when a stranger you're related to wraps you in a bear hug and says you look just like big ol' Merlie Jean before she got so sick, poor thing, and how come you never write? Try, "Bug, off." It works for me. Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on.
