Hey everyone, in light of the fact that Taylor just finished transcribing the whole 1880 Huerfano County census and we need volunteers to proof it, I have a question. What should we do? Do we stop the obit project and jump on the census, or do we continue with both at one time? I'm game for doing everything at once, but you know that's just my style, so I need your input. What do you all think? Do you want to work on obits or census? Please let me know ASAP. Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on. Good morning List members! I hope this morning finds all of you well and happy. I just want all of you to know how thrilled I am at all the response we received on typing up those obits. I think this is the greatest list there is. Everytime you people jump in to help with a project it re-affirms my belief that we're on the right track here. When I saw all the volunteers asking to help on the obit project I just couldn't believe my eyes. This is so wonderful. I am going to start scanning those obits today. Some of you may be thinking, well geez, what's taking so long? I'm sorry, I had a little accident and I'm working single handed. The right one isn't functional right now. But, not to worry, it will heal and all will be well. I will start sending those obits out this afternoon. I will try a few and see how they work, then we'll go from there. It would be so great to have them all online and have a reason to empty a few more boxes out of this office. We have had some really cold temperatures here lately, everyone is remarking about it. But today it may get a little warmer. You all take care and expect those obits to start arriving soon. Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on. When I first started doing genealogical research, I attended a seminar for new researchers. The most important thing I took away from it was the instruction always to send a thank you note. The reasons for this (beyond mere courtesy) were twofold. First, later you might need to go back and ask another question or favor and you certainly want the person to be favorably predisposed to respond to your request. Second, even if you never need to contact that person again, you should leave him or her favorably inclined to answer such requests from others. I started doing this back in the days when a thank you note required pen, paper, envelope, and postage. Today, when I respond to a question or a request, I almost never receive so much as an e-mailed "thank you." I think we may need to consider that we are going to cause most of our free sources to suffer burnout. Eventually, they will not respond without financial remuneration. Thank you notes are cheaper. Let's do it, folks. Kenneth Dearden [email protected] Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on. You Are Hereby Appointed Family Historian By Michael R. Boyter historian We all witnessed the passing of the last century, and with it's passing, the memories of the 1900s live on only in the minds and memories of we who lived it. Tragically, for those who fail to keep a record of it, priceless family history, is going, going and soon to be gone! Think about this: Those who where born in 1990's will not remember much if any of the 1900s. Many born prior to the 1930's have already left us! So it is left to the rest of us to record all we can about ourselves, the world we live in, and of our beloved family members that came and went in the 1900's. Without doing so, when we are gone.so is your family's link to the past. Then your family, in the years to come, will have to make it through life without the benefit and comfort of your wisdom and knowledge. So, it is incumbent upon us to become historians of sort. Now how many of us, while sitting in a boring high school history class, ever thought that we'd be historians of the 1900s? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Someday Your Descendants Will Number In The Thousands ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- It's true that most of our written accounts of history will only be read by our descendants, but we ought not to discount the possibilities. The Net is the futuristic version of a "cave wall". The typical cave discovery tells us of how people lived thousands of years ago. Likewise, your personal history tells your story but it also indirectly records society and how it affected you and everyone around you. Many of us put parts of our family history on the Net and it's likely that our descendant will someday "contribute" other parts of your history to online archive/biography-type sites. Can you imagine the longevity of what you write today? Even on message boards! I have, in my possession, a journal written by my great-great-great-great grandfather. His name was John Murdock. He was born in the late 1700s. That's more than two hundred years ago. It's hard for me to imagine that my great-great-great-great grandchildren could be reading of my life in the year 2200. Imagine how the world will change by then and how the time in which we now live will contrast against theirs. With the technology and ability to store information that we now possess, there really is no excuse for anyone's descendants in the year 2200, for example, not to know of you and of the time in which you lived. If in the future there are no more newspapers, how "boring" will it be to comment on headlines in your local newspaper or about clipping coupons. If in the future there are no more gasoline-powered cars, how "boring" will it be to passively mentioned changing oil, going to the fuel pump and using language like "miles per gallon". While to us, these things are boring everyday things, they will be read with interest by your great-great-great-great grandchild. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- ...Some Didn't Even Know Their Grandparents Complete Names! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- I know I may be preaching to the choir, but I have one last point. To show how fast one's family history can fade, I wish to relate my experiences that I had while working with some 18-26 year olds. During the mid-1990s I was an Air Force recruiter and I routinely helped these young adults in filling out background investigation paperwork. I think you'd be surprised at how often it was that twenty-something year old kids couldn't tell me their parent's birth dates. Nor did many of them know where their parents were born. Some didn't even know their grandparent's complete names. This is a sad trend. You, by keeping a journal and writing your family history, can prevent a trend like this one from happening in your family. Someday your descendants will number in the thousands. Will they know of you and share your wisdom? Will they know anything of the eventful 1900s and the times you had? It's entirely up to you. Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Hi Arlene, I'm sorry I can't get the certificates you need, but here is the web site address: http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/hs/certs.asp It seems to me that I recently read somewhere that a Wayt was Governor of Colorado. I might be wrong but it sure seems like it. The Masonic cemetery has been entirely filmed, have you found the photos of their headstones yet? Not all of the photos are online yet, but they have been taken. In the Elks records, Paul Wayt was a resident of Walsenburg and was a lumber dealer. He was born 9-28-1893 in Walsenburg. He became a member of the Lodge on 3-18-1919 and was dropped for non-payment of dues on 4-1-1935. Paul was proposed for membership on 2-12-1919 paid his last dues on 10-4-1922. Ralph G. Wayt was born in Dorrance, Russell County Kansas on 4-4-1899. He was proposed as a member on 1-8-1916 but was rejected on 2-12-1916. It doesn't say why he was rejected. He was a garage owner and owned Walsenburg Auto Plumbing and Elec. Co. About 1911 he was treated by Dr. Johnson in Denver for acute tonsillitis. Dr. Paul E. Mathews was the examining doctor for the Lodge and he reported that he had know Mr. Wayt for 25 years. He described him as 5'9", 152 pounds, light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes, with a small scar on his left cheek. This is all I have on your line right now but will watch for anything else. Hope this helps! I'm with Chris, I am also from Oregon (Eugene to be exact) and I can also do lookups for people who may have relatives information hiding up here. We are a very close knit family and have gathered more information through this list than anyone can imagine. I've not had the pleasure of stepping foot in Huerfano County, but feel I know the county well. Good luck in your searches, ~Zale
Thank-you, Karen, for the info you sent. I do subscribe to Ancestry's basic and on-line image databases, and have pulled info off on many branches of the family. But I hadn't considered that after the Civil War, the Caldwells may have temporarily moved back to Kentucky from Texas, even though they were in Huerfano by 1880. In 1860, they were farming cotton in Fannin Co., Texas, and as I was horrified to discover, D. R. Caldwell was listed as a slaveholder on that year's slave and agriculture census. After the Emancipation, of course, without free labor, cotton farming was not so viable in that northeast Texas, Red River area, so the Caldwells may very well have scurried home to KY, only to try farming in CO a decade or two later? Rather doubt it because of the distances involved, but I will certainly check out those 1870 Ky census David Caldwell families very carefully. Original family story was that David Rice Caldwell and his family had walked from Ky to Texas "to get land" around 1859. My sister Faye and I started on our family genealogy just a year ago, and have already uncovered a real melting pot--stiff-necked Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from VA, NC, and KY (Caldwell, Jones, Moore, Talbott)---Pennsylvania Dutch from Illinois (Snyder, Snider, Capps, Reeves, Powell)--late-coming English Catholic merchants from England who settled in St. Louis and New Orleans and ran steamboats on the Mississippi (Mepham, Shaw)--and we're just starting to find info on my father's side of the family, Polish Catholic immigrants from Galicia who came over just before and after 1900, and ended up working in the West Virginia coal mines in poverty-stricken places with names like Wolf Hollow that stopped existing when the coal mines shut down. My husband's family were Craws from Scotland that came over in later 1800's and ran mercantile stores in KS and MO during the land rushes. Changed their name to Crowe to sound more English and upscale! Anyway, you're absolutely right about double-checking the names, dates, and stories your relatives give you--use them just as starting points, and verify!!! My husband Scott and I are 3rd generation Los Angelenos, but we live in Roseburg OR now. If I can help by sharing the work of checking Ancestry.com databases, or in the unlikely situation that anyone needs record checks from SW Oregon, let me know, and send me some obits too. I normally wouldn't be this chatty on a listserv, but this group sounds like a close-knit family! Thanks, Chris

Hi Karen, I realize how busy you are, but I wonder if you could help me with an address, or a tip on how to find where the first papers might have been filed for my family. My Grandfather, Francesco BOSONE, my Father, Giuseppe "Joe" BOSONE, my Uncle, Pietro BOSONE. My Grandfather came to the US in 1891, settled in the Gunnison area, working in the coal mines. My Grandmother and four children came to the US in 1901, and went to the Gunnison area to be with my Grandfather. I know that my Dad's final naturalization papers were given to him in Ellensburg, WA, but I am guessing that the initial papers were started in CO before they moved on to WA. They worked in the mines in Gunnison, Walsenburg, Trinidad, and Baldwin, CO. On the manifest of my Grandmother and children, it named a mine that looked to be "Alpine Coal Mine", Baldwin, CO. Don't know if that gives you enough information to get me on the right track, but will try to give you more info if needed. Thanking you in advance for any assistance you might be able to give me. Regarding the oral histories, I transcribed Martha Todd's and sent it back to you, but I don't see it online. Maybe I didn't send it. Can you check? I'll send it again if you can't find it. It's so nice to see everyone is still around. I was starting to wonder where everybody was hiding. Speaking of hiding, I have a brick wall my Bell family is hiding behind. My grandmother - Martha P. Patterson (from Walsenburg) married Joseph William Bell in Dawson, NM 1914. I know all about her parents and where they came from and Joseph Bell I know of his parents - John William Bell, but John's parents I have the hardest time, because we don't know if his name was George or Joseph Bell. The reason I am having so much trouble is the Weston, MO. (that is where my grandfather was born) records and website aren't nearly as detailed as helpful as the Walsenburg records and website. I guess I'll have to do it the old fashion way and go to the library. Dang it anyway. What I am trying to say here is that I love this group from Huerfano County. Dear Arleen and all, No I didn't receive a virtual bouquet, but it's not necessary. Just keep supporting the Huerfano County site is all I ask. But I did get a giggle out of your message. I could feel your excitement!! Believe it or not folks I get just as big a kick out of finding information for you, as you do to receive it! This was one of those cases where I had a hunch and BINGO I was right. Now how do I explain this without writing a book... First it is important to know the migration patterns when you're doing research. This applies not only to the New Mexico - Colorado scenario but the westward expansion from the east coast also. I have found many of my personal lines coming from the east by following the migration patterns. Hence, if you follow some of the main migratory routes from NM you will go through Conejos on your way to Huerfano County. Also, please remember that I have been doing this for 35 years, so I know to look in surrounding areas just in case a family doesn't fit the migration pattern. Sometimes something clicks in my brain and I know I've seen that family listed in one record or another so off I go searching. Usually if I have a definite date I can find something. Unfortunately I've forgotten more than I knew <very big grin>. Back in 1988 I transcribed the Conejos records from the original Spanish records so I have them here in the office. I offered them for sale during and after the Conference. No, these records are not online yet but I do hope to get them there someday. As I stated in my message to the list entitled "various records" today, I have records from many different places and my dream is to put them ALL online. In my office I have a large walk in closet that houses three 4 drawer filing cabinets with stacks on top, and one whole wall of bookshelves from top to bottom just crammed full of 3 & 4" notebooks full of records. Then I have all these boxes sitting around with more records in them and tons of floppies that I am now trying to get a handle on. My goal is to "de-paper" this office, meaning it's all going to get posted online. So you see why I am always asking for help in various projects. There's so much here that I want to give to all of you and I just can't do it alone. One day the boys and I were discussing my work and I said "Hell, I'm not running out of data, I'm running out of time!" <grin>. Now, one of the things we saw in Arleen's brick walls was that she had the wrong parents listed. That is not uncommon. Usually this happens when you get names from your elders. When you turn that information over to someone else, like me, I approach it with an open mind because I'm not stuck on what great Aunt Bea said. So I can look at it in a purely professional way. For this reason I always tell my researchers to have someone else look at their information when they're stuck. One of the neatest things that happened at our Conference was when we were at the barbecue and we all sat around talking. Shalane and Ilene both approached me with "What do I do now?" They had found a piece of information and didn't know where to go or how to follow up on it. I gave each of them my opinions and I hope it helped. You should have seen Shalane, she was making notes as fast as I was talking. I got a giggle out of that too. Well folks, that's what I'm here for, to help you further your research. I LOVE it. Anytime I can help someone out it encourages me to keep going. So Arleen...sweetie, you made my day too by posting to the List how excited you were to receive the information. The next brick wall I want to blast is Bobbi's. She's been looking for those elusive Bachicha's for ages and can't seem to make headway so I think we're going to gang up on them and see what we can do. What do you say Bobbi? Works for you, right? Now, any of you that seem to be up against a brick wall, drop me a line and let me know what you have, what you've found, and where you've looked. This is critical! With this information, I may be able to help, although there's no guarantee on anything <grin>. Depending on what I'm working on it may take a few days for me to get back to you, but I try to do it as fast as I can. Now my first paragraph needs some expanding on...supporting the Huerfano County site. What do I mean by "supporting"? As you all know I have spent the last two summers out in the field trying to film all the headstones and get the photos all online. Not all of them are up yet. So your financial support for that project would be welcome. It takes money for gas, batteries, floppies, etc., let alone the money it costs me every month to stay online and keep the site going. It never has to be alot of money, but every little bit helps. Even $5.00 would help out. For those of you that can't help financially, no problem, volunteer your time to help on a project, to type things up or to transcribe records from microfilm at your local FHC. When I mentioned scanning these newspapers and sending them out, the response has been WONDERFUL. This is the kind of help I need!!! Another thing you can do is to stay on the List and participate in whatever is being discussed, good, bad, or indifferent. The more you input, the more I output. Encourage each other and never hesitate to jump in and make suggestions or to help a fellow researcher. Especially our newbies. We were all there at one time or another. Let's all help each other and have some fun doing it! Karen
Send some my way Karen, as we mainframe operations say 'I'm not a typist, that's why I went into operations rather than programming", I'll peck away at the keys. -----Original Message----- From: Karen Mitchell [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, January 15, 2002 11:27 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [COHUERFA] various records Hi members, I just answered a query from one of our researchers and it reminded me to let all of you know that my records are not exclusive to Huerfano and Taos Counties. In 35 years of research I have amassed quite a few records from other areas as well. The ones that may be important to Huerfano researchers are the: Holy Trinity Marriage records from Trinidad, Las Animas County. These are the early marriages only and date 9-8-1866 to 8-14-1884. If you can't find a marriage in Huerfano County in this time frame you may try these. (Sorry Bobbi, I already checked for your Bachicha's with no luck). Also the Our Lady of Guadalupe records in Conejos. Many of our families were in that area prior to coming to Walsenburg. As you may have noted we just broke through a brick wall on three families in that area. So if any of you have Catholic families that you can't seem to find, we can check these records also. As I sat there, researching the Holy Trinity records, I thought about the extreme desire I have to see all of these records go online for all of you to view. Maybe someday I will have all of them posted for you. I also note that there have been quite a few of the Oral Histories that some of you have ordered. PLEASE consider typing up the ones you have and sending them back for posting to our pages. Someday I would like to see ALL of these online, for free access by all the researchers. And besides that, they make great reading! Even if they are not from your own family, they tell stories of the early years of Huerfano County, which is interesting to all. I have tried scanning them to post them but the clarity just isn't there. So come on folks, if you have ordered a Oral History, please type them up for us so we can get them posted. Now that brings up another project that we may embark upon. As you know, obituaries can be an extremely useful tool in researching your families and rounding them out. What I would like to propose is this: I have several boxes of Huerfano newspaper obits here in the office that I can't seem to find the time to type up and get in the database. I would like to scan them and send out the images for our volunteers to type up and send back for posting. All you would need is the ability to view an image on your computer. What do you think? Do you think this is a worthwhile project for us? How many of you would be willing to do this? If I sent each person on our List 5 obits to type up we could sure make a dent in this stack of papers! And think of all the extra data we could post to our pages. Let me know. I have all kinds of little projects like this that we could do, all I need is volunteers that are willing to give just a little bit of their time. Hope you all have a GREAT day!
