Hi everybody! I have a virus. NO don't hit your delete button! It's all in my head <grin>, okay so the rest of the old body don't feel to great either, but my head feels like a bucket. Everyone up here has it. My grandchildren were sweet enough to share it with me. Luckily it only lasts about 5 days, and I'm on day 2. Well, good news...bad news. Bad news first. I took all the marriages down. As I was conversing with a gentleman on the marriages I got to comparing things and saw we had just too many errors. As I told you when I posted them, they hadn't been proofed yet. So I took them all down. Another thing I noticed was that the copies that Debra sent me, up to 1911, didn't match the microfilm I have. Evidently the books were filmed at two different times and one has more info than the other so I am combining the data. Which is good news for us. Good news. I've added the marriages for 1870 through 1878, proofed and re-posted the ones for 1910 to 1912, all with extended information. I am working on proofing the rest of them and will try to have them back online in a couple of days. BUT if you had marriages in the 1910 - 1912 database, you will need to go back and re-check them in case they had errors. Some of the errors were just in spelling, but some had the wrong parents listed or the wrong date. So check them carefully. If you find any errors please let me know so I can check them again. More good news. I have added the burial permits for 1942 - 1943 - 1944. I've also added the Index for County Book 1, which is the first book in the County Clerk's office that transactions were recorded in. It has a lot of neat stuff in it. The earliest marriage recorded in the County was in 1862. I can hardly wait to delve into the other books. I bet that's where we're going to find some of those marriages that we can't turn up elsewhere. And in the meantime I'm still clipping obits from these old newspapers that I have here. I have gone through 2 boxes so far and I think there's 2 more large ones to go. Right now I have a VERY FAT file folder full. I sent a message to my guru that I need to know how to scan newsprint effectively. Then I found out he's in Dallas for a week. Of all the nerve! <grin> I'm also pulling out data on the Class Reunions and need to get that posted to our school pages. I'm still working on cleaning up all these floppies that I have downloaded alot of information on that I took off the computer to make room for other stuff. I've cleaned up over 200 floppies so far. One of my goals for the new year was to do some more interviews....haven't got to that yet. Why can't these people stay up all night? Sure would make it more convenient for me <grin>. Commercial....Has anyone tried these new Listerine PocketPaks? They are great for a sore throat! They're pretty neat. You just put one of these little paper thingy's on your tongue and it disappears. Think they'll pay me for this? Arleen Aguirre just sent me a photo, a beautiful wedding picture, that she can't identify. I'm going to post it and see if anyone out there can identify it for us. Give me a day or two to get to that. And still no one has claimed the box of memorabilia and photos that Wynelle donated over a year ago so I'm going to scan all of those too, and get them posted. I think we need an orphan photo page so start going through Grandma's boxes for any photos you can't identify and we'll see if we can solve some mysteries. Which reminds me...I still have photos to post to the cemeteries <sigh>. Geez, I'm tired already......<very big grin>. Can anyone please come over and help? (please) I'll share my chocolate chip cookies with you. Guess that's all for today's report. Let me hear from you! Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on. Regarding the question that Lori asks about Holy Trinity Parish (Trinidad, CO) records for 1912-1950, to my knowledge those records are not published and available for purchase as are some of the very early baptismal and marriage records (1868-1884). I have a copy of both of these early Holy Trinity records that I purchased from the National Society of Hispanic Genealogy (NSHG) in Denver. I think that the books were initially published by the Genealogy Society of Hispanic America (GSHA). The records are available from the Parish Office. I think that there is a minimal fee for the admin person to copy each record for you. You can call the Holy Trinity Parish office at 719-846-3369 and/or write them at 235 N. Convent St., Trinidad, CO 81082. I was born and raised in Trinidad and regularly visit family there. The parish office staff is very helpful in providing records you need. Be sure you give them all the information they would need to locate the record for you. There are also some types of records available at the Carnegie Public Library in Trinidad. The library has an excellent genealogy resource room in the back of the library. I've often used it. The main librarian there is very knowledgeable. I don't recall her name at this moment. For example, they have the original funeral record books from the several funeral homes that have closed in Trinidad. They also have original coroner record books, a card file of names for which they have obituary information, and numerous volumes of books with information related to Trinidad and to Colorado. The library phone number is 719-846-6841 and the address is 202 N. Animas St., Trinidad, CO 81082. Ye Gods....where to start...? First, you're scanning more than one at a time, right? Are you scanning ones that are printed on that heat-sensitive paper that the Walsenburg library uses in their microfilm reader? That could be a problem, if your scanner generates heat as it scans as well as light. Be careful, or you'll end up with black originals, even with a copier, if it does the same thing. Any that are on that kind of paper you might want to transfer to plain paper anyway, just to be safe. Over time, it'll turn black. The best thing to do is preview EVERY scan. I know it slows down the process, but you'll lose less time in the long run. Also, lay out several of your original sheets on a table first, and group them by lightness/darkness of the originals. If you "squinty" your eyes almost closed, you'll be able to see the brightness differences better. Also, use greyscale settings on your scanner, not black and white. Use color ones only if you have no luck with the greyscale, since it'll make the file a lot bigger. Hope this helps. Thanks bunches Taylor! I'm currently transcribing the 1920 census (for Oakview precinct only) for the website so I know the pain in the neck it can be. I volunteered for 3 websites and a set of obits and I'm trying to rewrite a book on my great-great grandmother (I got a call last week from someone who wanted me to publish it!) and I guess I'll never get that paper written for that college course I took. ANCESTRY QUICK TIP ===================================================================== Regarding the articles about what will happen to the hard work we put into tracing our family trees, I know my work will go on. I have always included my children (ages nine to seventeen) in my trips in search of ancestors. When we go to cemeteries I have them help look for tombstones and take photographs. When we go to libraries that allow children, I give them one or two surnames to look for and money for the copy machines. (Yes, they also know how to do the happy dance!) All of my children have said that they love doing this with me, and that they will keep the tree growing. Beeglelady Karen Mitchell 2001 has been declared "The Year of "Love". Pass it on. ===================================================================== NATIONAL ARCHIVES TO RELEASE 1930 CENSUS ON 1 APRIL 2002 ===================================================================== Washington, DC . . . The National Archives will release the 1930 Federal population census for the first time on 1 April 2002. At that time, the microfilmed copies will be opened for research at the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, at thirteen of the National Archives regional facilities across the nation and through the National Archives rental program. The National Archives Building is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, between 7th and 9th Streets, NW. The Microfilm Reading Room will open for research at 8:45 AM, following an event marking the occasion. The event will be open to the press. For a complete listing of National Archives regional locations and opening times, check the Web site at http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/genindex.html The 1930 census is the 15th Federal census mandated by the U.S. Constitution, which states "The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct . . . " The 1930 census consists of 2,667 rolls of population schedules and 1,587 rolls of Soundex indexes for twelve southern states, totaling 4,254 rolls. Even though the statistical summaries collected by enumerators are made public shortly after the census is taken, information on individuals and families is restricted by law for privacy reasons for seventy-two years. [92 Stat. 915; Public Law 95- 416; October 5, 1978]. A NOTE OF CAUTION TO RESEARCHERS: There are personal name finding aids (Soundex) for twelve southern states only. The National Archives will make available research guides and geographic finding aids to help researchers locate families not listed in the Soundex. Knowing the exact spelling of the last name, the state and county where the family lived in 1930 will greatly assist the search. The National Archives has Federal decennial censuses dates back to the 1790 census, which consisted of twelve rolls of microfilm. The most recent census to be released was the 1920 census that was opened on 1 April 1992. It consists of 2,076 rolls of film. While the original intent of the census was to determine how many representatives each state was entitled to send to the U.S. Congress, it has become a vital tool for Federal agencies in determining allocation of Federal funds and resources. The census has also become a key research tool for sociologists, demographers, historians, political scientists and genealogists. The 1930 census provides a wealth of socio-economic information such as the following: names of all persons living in each home; relationship of each person to the head of household; whether the home is owned or rented; value of the home; if the family owns a radio; if they own a farm; whether they attended school or college; if they can read or write; place of birth; citizenship status; and occupation.
