    1. [COHUERFA] One of your surprises
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. Hi Members! Before I close up shop for the night I am just dyeing to tell you about one of the goodies I have for you. I have been working my fingers off trying to get some of the cemetery photos online for all of you. It was so nice outside here the other day I thought "Oh no, it's almost Spring and time to go back out in the field, and I don't have all of last years work posted!!!" So I started in posting the photos. Here is what I've done so far: Dolzanie cemetery - 1 photo Fort Cemetery - 5 photos, notice the last one here of the old Spanish fence. This is how they used to make corrals before the invention of barbed wire. Perrino Cemetery - Only one photo because it's the only one left. Vigil Cemetery - 6 photos Gomez Cemetery at Del Carbon - 6 photos Masonic cemetery - 507 photos and about 2/3 of those are new listings, so check it carefully. These are from Sections 10 and 12 and are all marked in red. There were quite a few corrections made here, although not as many as at St. Mary's, but you will need to check for your ancestors names and correct dates. This is NOT all of the photos I have so I will be working on more in the next few days. St. Mary's South cemetery - 1049 photos. These are from Sections 1 & 2. Section 1 is in red and section 2 is in green so you can pick them out readily. I was really surprised at how many corrections I had to make on this. If you have ancestors buried here, make sure you go in and check them again, some that I had marked as "no marker" are actually there. And others have had dates or name corrections. This is all the photos from those two sections so I won't have any more until I can get over there to film some more. Let me tell you, this is a whole bunch of coding and just takes FOREVER! But hopefully some of you may find the photos you have been waiting on. If any of you find any mistakes please let me know so I can get them corrected. I still have quite a few other cemeteries to post, and more from Masonic, so hang in there and I'll try to get them all up real soon. I hope you enjoy this little surprise I have for you!! 3. Can someone give me some direction please? The 1920 census says that g-grandfather was naturalized in 1902; we know that in 1902 he was living in Rouse; where, if, and how, do I go about finding naturalization records for him? On another note: just my luck--the census takers for Huerfano County had the worst penmanship in the nation--I'm losing my sight trying to "decipher it"! Thanks for any help. Janet

    3. This is wonderful about the data on Crestones. A very big thank you to Mr. Taylor. I am still looking for information on the family of Concepcion Cisneros, my great grandmother who married Juan Pedro (John Peter) Deus. He became a teacher in the crestones school and that is where he met her. I will get dates etc later and see if Mr Taylor can find anything. Again a very big thank you to Mr. Taylor and you dear Karen. Cecelia S. Weber

    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. Your Monday morning chuckle: Martha's Way: * Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips. My Way: * Just suck the ice cream out of the bottom of the cone for Pete's sake, you are probably lying on the couch with your feet up eating it anyway. ============= Martha's Way: * To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes. My Way: * Buy Hungry Jack Mashed Potato Mix and keep it in the pantry for up to a year. ============= Martha's Way: * Spray your Tupperware with nonstick cooking spray before pouring in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains. My Way: * Feed your garbage disposal and there won't be any leftovers. ============= Martha's Way: * When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead & there won't be any white mess on the outside of the cake. My Way: * Go to the bakery. They'll even decorate it for you. ============= Martha's Way: * If you accidentally over-salt a dish, drop in a peeled potato and it will absorb the excess salt. My Way: * If you over-salt a dish while you're cooking that's too darn bad. My motto is: I made it, you will eat it, I don't care how bad it tastes! ============= Martha's Way: * To determine whether an egg is fresh, immerse it in a pan of cool, salted water. It sinks, it's fresh, but if it rises to the surface, throw it away. My Way: * Eat, cook or use the egg anyway. If you feel bad later, you will know it wasn't fresh. ============= Martha's Way: * To cure a headache, take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away. My Way: * Martha, dear, the only reason this works is because you can't rub a lime on your forehead without getting lime juice in your eye, and then the problem isn't the headache anymore; it is because you are now blind. ============= Martha's Way: * Don't throw out all that leftover wine. Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces. My Way: * What leftover wine? ============= Martha's Way: * Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers. Just slice and rub raw potatoes on the stains and rinse with water. My Way: * Mashed potatoes will now be replacing the antibacterial soap in the handy dispenser next to my sink. ============= Martha's Way: * Place a slice of apple in hardened brown sugar to soften it. My Way: * Brown sugar is supposed to be "soft"? ============= Martha's Way: * Now look what you can do with Alka-Seltzer: To clean a toilet, drop two tablets in, wait 20 min, brush and flush. To remove a stain from a vase or glass cruet, fill with water and drop in two tablets. To polish jewelry, drop two Alka-Seltzer tabs into a glass of water and immerse jewelry for two minutes. To clean a thermos bottle, fill with water and drop in four tabs and let sit for an hour or more (if necessary). My Way: (a real time saver) * Put your jewelry, vases and thermos in the toilet. Add a bottle of Alka-Seltzer tabs and you have solved a whole bunch of problems at once. For the really bold......drop in your dentures too

    1. [COHUERFA] Hi honey I'm home!
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. Hi everyone! I'm back with you. A little less for wear and tear but here I am. THANKS to all of you that have sent personal messages to me expressing your concern and well wishes. I truly do appreciate this group. I may be a little slow getting all the email caught up so please bear with me for a few days. (crawling up on the soap box) I hereby declare that all persons must die in alphabetical order. You are no longer allowed to die just whenever you want to, you must wait your turn in the alphabetical listing so it won't be so hard for current and future researchers to find you. The year 2002 will be designated for those with surnames starting with an "A". So as you can deduct, you will only get to die once every 26 years. If you miss the year for your letter of the alphabet, you will have to wait until it comes up again in the rotation. There will be no deviation from this order. (crawling down from soap box <grin>). I just have to tell you about this...I met one of my new neighbors that just built a house down the road. Mr. Taylor is very well connected to Chama and knows so many of the people up there. He had invited me over so that he could tell me about the people buried in the Chama cemetery. Boy, he knows who is whose kids and who married who and who their ancestors were...a veritable gold mine of information. I wish all of you could have been sitting in my pocket, this man is so interesting to listen to. As we sat in his beautiful new home visiting, he said "I have something to show you that you may be interested in." He went in the other room and came out with an extremely old ledger book. When he started to explain the entries in this ledger, you could have knocked me over with a feather!!! I was absolutely speechless (imagine that <grin>)!!! Here in my hands was the old ledger of the church in Chama, once Crestones. The first membership list was in 1883! You can't even imagine my thoughts at that time! WOW!!! Mr. Taylor has said that he would transcribe that list for me. Now we will be able to definitely place the families there. And you should see the handwriting, it's beautiful! What a treasure to have! I am so excited about this, you just can't imagine. It is so very hard to find ANYTHING on Crestones and I feel like this is a jackpot. So if any of you had families in the Chama or Crestones area and have questions, Ken said you could contact him and he will be on our mailing list now. If you wish to contact him just address Ken Taylor on our List. He has quite a bit of genealogy on the families up there, especially the Valdez family. And PLEASE thank him for sharing with us. In another day or so I am going to have a nice surprise for all of you, something you all have been waiting for, for quite some time. More on that later. >From what I understand, Taylor Hayes has been trying to get the census posted on the net so we can go ahead with the proofing, but so far she hasn't heard back from the Archivist. She will let us know when that project is ready to go. Dave suggested that I photocopy the obits, then try to scan them. That's probably the best idea so far, but right now the funds aren't available to do that so I'm still trying to learn how to scan newsprint with out it coming out all black. Some of them come out pretty decent but more often than not, it's black. Believe me, if I had the money, you all would be busy typing your little fingers off right now! And that reminds me...THANK YOU!!! I was so tickled to see all the volunteers jumping up to help out with the obits. Sometimes it just takes a little extra time to get a project going, usually due to lack of funds Are all of you wrapping up the loose ends of your winter genealogy? Do you realize Spring is just around the corner? It's pretty mind boggling to think of all the projects I want to put the finishing touches on before Spring gets here. I have some new material to do look-ups in and will let you know more about that in a day or two, when I am more equipped to handle any requests. Actually that will make 3 new things I am going to report on in the next few days so stay tuned! You know I'm not very good at keeping secrets <very big grin>. The other morning as I stood looking out the patio doors I saw a coyote right out by the back of my back yard. It was so neat. He/she just stood there for the longest time and I just watched. I still get excited about the wild life around here. It's so great to have the opportunity to observe them. I hear the coyotes all the time but I hadn't ever seen one out in the day around here. At night I lay in bed and listen to them yipping back and forth. Too bad they don't come over here and feast on gophers! I just lost another tree to the gophers! Hoping all of you are well and hanging with us! Let me hear from you! Look for another report in a couple days. Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. 3. Linda Haas Davenport sent this message on the challenges we face in using the 1930 census. The link she provided may be useful. Here is a message from one of the USGenWeb Advisory Board Members who attended an information session on the 1930 census records: " I spent today at the San Bruno CA NARA branch attending a training day for volunteers who need to be equipped to help folks use the 1930 Census when it comes out in April.... First comment.... it ain't gonna be easy. Only 11 southern states are soundexed and there is no indexing. This means folks will have to use city guides and maps to identify enumeration districts, etc. The preliminary process was averaging one hour per record today.... daunting to say the least." Here is a site that will help you find the information you will need for Enumeration districts as well as some other information. http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census/

    1. [COHUERFA] Quick Tip from Ancestry
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. ANCESTRY QUICK TIP ===================================================================== When I want to identify people in a photo, I lay a piece of tracing paper over the top and note their identities there, rather than on the back of the photo. The tracing paper can be folded back to view the picture, and folded down to find out whom it is. This protects the photo and makes it easy to correct if I have mis-identified anyone. (Writing on the back of a photo causes it to eventually bleed through and ruins the picture.) I have also used this method to send photos to relatives so they can identify the people they recognize and mail the tissue paper back to me, keeping the photo. 3. Hi Bobbi, In checking my Taos marriages I find this: 12-9-1848 Jose Ramon Bachicha, single son of Antonio Bachicha, deceased, and Anna Maria Velasquez, resident of the plasa of Santisima Trinidad and native of Abiquiu, married Juana Rosalia Gallegos, single daughter of Juan de Jesus Gallegos and Juana de los Angeles Vigil, resident of the same place. Sponsors Jose Antonio Bachicha and Concepcion Lamelas, residents of Arroyo Seco. Witnesses Pablo Sandoval and Julian Urban, resident of Don Fernando. 12-13-1849 Jose de Jesus Bachicha, single son of Antonio Bachicha and Anna Maria Velasquez, resident of Santisima Trinidad and native of Abiquiu with Maria Josefa Martines, single daughter of Jose Martines and Maria Paula Maldonado, resident of the same place and native of Taos. Sponsors Ricardo Vigil and Maria Dolores Gallegos. Witnesses: Julian Urban and Pablo Sandoval of Don Fernando. 2-19-1848 Maria Soledad? Valentina, 6 day old, daughter of Juan Antonio Crus and Maria Lorensa Bachicha. PG: Antonio Crus and Maria Manuela Ribera. MG: Manuel Antonio Bachicha and Ana Maria Velasquez. In the Taos Baptisms I find: 4-24-1849 Jose Francisco, 3 days old, son of Jose Ramon Bachicha and Maria Rosalia Gallegos. PG (Paternal grandparents): Antonio Bachicha and Anna Maria Velasquez. MG: Juan Gallegos and Juana Vigil. Godparents unreadable. This is the last Bachicha baptism in my records for Taos. Going to the Family Groups for Abiquiu I find Manuel Antonio Bachicha, married to Anna Maria Velasquez with these two daughters: 1. Estefana Bachicha who married Juan Vigil, son of Salbador Vigil and Josefa Duran. Estefana had a daughter, Maria Dolores de Jesus Vigil who was baptized on 3-20-1842. 2. Maria Manuela Bachicha, who had a "natural" son, Juan Isidro Bachicha, baptized on 5-15-1842. These are on the FGS and I would need to get the microfilm out to do further research on this family and to see exactly what these records say. In Beyond Origins it says: BACHICHA: Bachicha people were living in the Rio Arriba villages in the second half of the eighteenth century. Manuel Antonio Bachicha, son of Salvador Bachicha and Maria Mestas, deceased, married Maria Teresa Alejabu, 9-8-1790 (M33, Santa Clara). His brother Pedro Bachicha and wife Carmel Atencio had a son, Jose Arcadio, 2-16-1834 (B-49, Taos). Certain indications lead one to suspect that this family stems from Juan Bautista Duran, alias Bachicha (NMF, 171). Using this as a reference point I went to my Santa Clara marriage notebook and found this: 9-8-1790 Manuel Antonio Bachicha single, son of Salbador Bachicha and Maria Mestas, deceased, married Maria Teresa Hejabu, single daughter of Isidro Hejabu and Juana Lujan, residents of Chama. Witnesses: Juan Isidro Lobato and Jose Alonso Truxillo. 3-19-1791 Salbador Bachicha, widow of Maria Duran married Maria Magdalena de Herrera, widow of Antonio Archuleta, residents of Chama. Witnesses: Manuel Gregorio Torres and Jose Alonso Truxillo. Jose Belasquez was a witness at a marriage 1-15-1792. 5-21-1793 Jose Alejabu married Antonia Lopez, widow of Antonio Mestas, Witnesses: Juan de Prado and Jose Lopez. 2-27-1797 Agustin Alejabu, single son of Isidro Antonio Alejabu and Juana Lujan, deceased, married Maria de Jesus Martin, single daughter of Salvador Martin and Juaquina Mascarenas. Witness: Jose Alonso. 10-25-1801 Agustin Alijabo, single son of Ysidro Alejabo and Juana Luxan, both deceased married Maria Antonia Torres, single daughter of Antonio Torres, deceased, and Maria Simona Jinzo residents of Chama. Manuel Bachicha was a witness at a marriage on 2-14-1808, 4-11-1809, I did not look further on witnesses for either of these families. 5-6-1807, Manuel Antonio Bachicha son of Salvador Bachicha, deceased, and Maria Duran, also deceased, married Ana Maria Belasquez, daughter of Juan Jose Belasquez and Rosa Tapia. Witnesses were Don Jose de la Cruz Quintana and Juan Archuleta. 1-9-1822 Pedro Antonio Alerabu, 25, single son of Ysidro Alerabu and Francesca de Herrera, spanish, deceased, married Maria Ursula Trujillo 30, single daughter of Juan Truxillo and Francesca Cordoba, spanish, deceased, residents of the plaza of San Jose. END of Santa Clara marriages. Santa Cruz baptisms: 7-20-1767 Jose del Carmen, born 7-16-1767, son of Ysidro Alejabu and Juana Lujan, residents of Pujuaque, jurisdiction of Nambe. Sponsors Juan Manuel Lujan and Maria Antonia Lujan. Taos Baptisms: 3-21-1824 Juana Maria of the Rancho, daughter of Pablo Borrego and Angela Belasquez. PG: Juan Borrego and Manuela Garcia. MG: Juan Jose Velasquez and Maria Rosa Tapia. 7-3-1831 Jose Francisco 6 days old son of Pedro Ygnacio Bachicha and Maria del Carmel Atencio, residents of Arroyo Hondo. PG: Salvador Bachicha and Margarita Mestas. MG: Ylario Atencio and Balbaneda Petrona. 2-16-1834 Jose Arcadio 6 days old son of Pedro Bachicha and Carmel Atencio, residents of Arroyo Hondo. PG: Salvador Bachicha and Maria Mestas. MG: Ylario Atencio and Balbaneda Lucero 7-28-1837 Maria Catarina 4 days old, daughter of Pedro Bachicha and Maria del Carmel Atencio. All grandparents the same except it gives the maternal grandmother as Balbaneda Giron. At least now you know where your Bachicha family came from. My suggestion would be to check the Santa Clara baptisms on microfilm to find more of this family. Hope this helps! 3. A few of you have written to me asking where you can get more information for you town pages. One thought I have is the Social Security Death Index. If you go to that on Rootsweb.com and use the advanced search engine you can type in the name and state of your town (no name) to see if you can pull up the deaths for that town. It is more recent but it will give you a basis to start putting some of your families together. Cut and paste them into your Word program so you can manipulate them however you'd like.
