You are awesome. Yippeeeee for a person like Karen to be on our side. Question: I would like to know where The Maitland Coal Camp was located. I have looked on lots of maps old and new and it is never mentioned or on them. My dad was born in Maitland and worked in the Coal Mine at the age of 12. I have the picture of the camp. Thanks, Janice
Tah dahhhhhhh!! Hi all, Just wanted to thank everyone again for the photo information. I finally got my computer going again. Still having a few glitches, but at least I can read and receive some e-mail! Wanted to let everyone know that I have for a VERY short time the Sacramental Records from the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe / Bautismos Our Lady of Guadalupe Church de Taos / 12 July 1887 to 27 December 1900..........if any one wants me to do a quick look up this weekend, let me know. It lists the people being baptized, if I could get the person's last name in all CAPS, it would be helpful. Now this link is just interesting, given that so many of our forbears wandered back and forth among the coal camps;my grandmother told me stories of this time, and it disturbed her whole life; as a child, she saw a man shot by the militia for trying to leave one of the camps-imagine. The massacre aside (don't mean that in a frivolous manner), the pictures on this site are spellbinding--just to imagine how these people survived these camps--the guts and determinaton--and the funeral procession for Louis Tikas is awe inspiring--men in a line as far as one can see. Interesting, and very sad.... http://coloradodigital.coalliance.org/cfphoto.html
----- Original Message ----- From: Doug and Terry Holcomb To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 7:44 PM Karen, Congratulations on your Huerfano county site. I have been doing a lot of research on the internet and your site is loaded with neat stuff. Thanks, Doug Holcomb, Arizona
Sheriff Edward Farr Huerfano County On the morning of July 16, 1899, Huerfano County Sheriff Edward Farr joined a posse in the New Mexico Territory town of Cimarron. The posse was searching for the famous Sam Ketchum Gang that had been robbing banks, trains and postal units in New Mexico and Arizona for many years. Their latest escapade had been the robbery of a Colorado & Southern train on July 11th, just south of Folsom, in the New Mexico Territory. That evening, the posse caught up with a remnant of the gang, consisting of Sam Ketchum, G. W. Franks (alias Will Carver) and Elza Lay (alias William McGinnis). During the attack on the camp, Sheriff Farr was shot three times and died within minutes. Ketchum was later arrested and hung on April 26, 1901 in New Mexico for train robbery. Lay escaped but was arrested on August 16th, tried, convicted of Farr's death and sentenced to life imprisonment. Franks was never caught. Ironically, Lay was pardoned by New Mexico Governor Otero on January 10, 1906. Sheriff Farr was one of southern Colorado's largest ranchers and was eulogized as "a man of generous impulses and unyeilding courage". Also killed in the gun battle was New Mexico Deputy Sheriff M. Love. http://csp.state.co.us/academy/acmembk.htm

Hello List members! This message is going out to both the Huerfano and Taos lists because it pertains to both. When I first started as Coordinator for these Counties back in 1997, the first thing I did was build a "Links" page for each County. As time passed, and we continued to add data to the County sites, these pages went by the wayside. It didn't appear that they were needed that much because at the time there wasn't near what there is today on the web. Now I think it would be a good idea to put the Links pages back on our County sites because the web has expanded so very much, especially in the past year. I would like some volunteers to start gathering Links that pertain to our Counties so I can once again post a page in each County. It is a matter of searching the internet to see what is out there and simply asking if we can "link to" that page. In constantly updating our pages and adding more data, I don't have the time to go surfing so I am asking for help to get this done. Won't you PLEASE help out here by volunteering to do this small task? Once you get all the links together I will build a page for them and get it added to our County sites. Please let me hear from some of you that would be willing to do this. Hope you all are having a GREAT day! Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. You know Janet, I think you and I share a very deep feeling here. Yes, it is a tribute to the ones that have passed on before us. Last night I received a private message from a lady that had tried to contact me by phone. She had buried her baby in the La Veta cemetery, had moved out of state and had never been able to afford to come back and visit the grave. She said now she can visit her baby's grave anytime she wants. You can only imagine how emotional that message was. So you see, it's not just about recording history, because someday these stones will all be gone, it's about paying tribute and honor to our ancestors that built this country too. I'm sorry I made you cry but it's so heartwarming to know that some of my researchers are so very touched by the work that I do. THANK YOU for your message. I am in need of some help. I am going to be cancelling my home msn dsl account due to nothing but trouble with them. Basically they have no way of preventing spam and other disgusting email. Consequently I am looking at peak.net. Has anyone used this before and how do they do as far as security. I will need a static ip address due to needing to access a VPN for my job. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be very interested. Again security and price for static ip and dsl is what I am looking for. Thanks to all of you, csw
