HUMOR: You Want to Know What? --------------------------------- Thanks to: Nancy Haugh [email protected] I thought readers might enjoy this paragraph written by census enumerator Mary Ames Atkins at the end of the 1880 Salem, Massachusetts census, Enumeration District 240: "A thorough, patient, faithful canvass, which I have prosecuted in spite of dogs, an ignorant post-master, pitiful penny-a-liners (livers?), "bad whiskey," a too sadly frequent assurance that my employer was "a meddlesome fool," and long journeys, often with no one to enumerate for great distances." 3. Family Treasures Found at Online Auctions By Linda Lowder [email protected] I practically live on eBay, and am saddened to see so many family Bibles, photos, marriage certificates and other things that should be handed down to the descendants being sold. I bought an old vintage photo album in hopes of getting it back to the family, but there are no names on anything. A week ago I bought an old tintype wedding photo of a couple, and the back of it said, "Grandpa and Grandma MEERDINK -- 1866." I found their family a few days later and last Friday, I sent the photo. It sure made them happy to receive this photo, and it made me feel just as good sending it to them. I bought a marriage certificate for a HOUSER/DURKEE in Harrison County, Indiana, but have no leads on it yet.(I even left a note on the Message Boards). Please let people know that their family history may be being sold on these auction sites. I wish I could save them all by buying the things I see, but I'm on a fixed income at the present. Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. 3. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MONTH. RootsWeb was founded with the help of many selfless and dedicated individuals. These people, and many others, volunteer their time and talents to the pursuit of genealogical research. In a continuing effort to express our appreciation to the intricate network of RootsWeb volunteers, we are declaring April the official RootsWeb Volunteer Appreciation Month. Each week, we will be spotlighting various volunteers who have shown amazing devotion in helping others trace their genealogy. Keep an eye on our home page to read their stories. We will also give users the chance to show their appreciation for the help they have received. There is now a Message Board created for the sole purpose of expressing appreciation toward volunteers as well as sharing stories of success made possible only through the help of another genealogist. Please join us in saluting our volunteers. This is your chance to thank them and give them the recognition they deserve. I started my autobiography several years ago, but have never really completed it. My suggestion would be to place several copies in various repositories. Many libraries have Oral History Programs where they go out and interview the elderly of the County or community, so that should be your target. I would suggest these areas: The town or County library AND historical society where you were born. The area where your grandparents or parents were born, or both. Any locale where you would show up on the census. The major library AND historical society of the State where you were born. The major library AND historical society of the State where you now live. A copy for each of your children and grandchildren. Copies for any and all distant relatives that you know of. At least two major libraries on each coast. Any web site that would encompass the above areas. (But think of privacy issues first.) Paper copies in your own personal files. Now, my reasoning behind this is that the more copies you have out there, the more likely it would be for one of them to survive and to be handed down through the generations, either through the family or through the public repositories. I have several of these that were written, or told, by my ancestors many years ago and have been invaluable to me in doing my research. One of which was instrumental in getting me going in the right direction on one of my lines after I had received some erroneous data from a far distant cousin. It is a recollection that was told by my 3rd great grandfather about his ancestors and his life. Only a genealogy researcher can appreciate the thrill I felt when I found this little piece of family history. Any one else have any ideas? Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bobbalee Hughes" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2002 7:09 AM Just checking in, as Karen suggested. What sunshine? As soon as the snow melts enough so I can find the ground, I'll think about the garden. :-) Here's a project I'm working on connected with genealogy. I'm writing my autobiography. I'm trying to put in all that information I'd like to have about my ancestors, thinking that some day I might have a descendant who will be as interested in family history as I am. Now the major problem is figuring out how to be sure he or she gets a copy of my autobiography. Any suggestions on where to leave it? I'm thinking maybe a hundred or more years down the line I'd like this to be available. Bobbalee

    3. Good evening List members! I'm sorry I've been neglecting all of you lately. I'm still fighting this bronchial pneumonia and it does seem to catch up with me at times. Dr. says I will be fine if I don't relapse so I'm behaving myself and taking it pretty easy. I would like to announce that Arleen Aguirre is my new Assistant Coordinator for Pueblo County, and it sounds like she's really going to be a good one. It will take time for us to get some new data online but we're working on it. Hopefully we will see Pueblo grow as well as Huerfano has. A very BIG THANK YOU to Arleen! For all of you that sent messages about how to get those holes dug for the trees, I THANK YOU, we did have a good time with that bantering, didn't we. But unfortunately I just couldn't get those gophers trained to put the holes in the right places <grin>. Well the holes are all in place now, thanks to a very nice young man of our community named Brandon. With two excellent references from my neighbors, I hired Brandon and found him to be one of the nicest young men I have ever met. Just a great young man! The last few days the weather here in Colorado has just been beautiful! Wish I could share all this sunshine with all of you. Wednesday we are supposed to get some moisture. Wish you all would check in so I know you're still out there. Haven't heard from some of you in awhile so I don't know if we're still on the right track here. So what's everyone been doing? Enjoying the sunshine? Working in your gardens? Are any of you planting gardens this year? Has anyone found any new and exciting information on their ancestors? Anyone coming to Colorado this year? You all take care. Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. 3. Thank you Taylor for your hard work and giving these "tired eyes" a chance to give something back to the county. Karen, I am purchasing charms, potions, garlic strands silver bullets (not really a Coors drinker, but and port in a storm) to ward off spells, but I think you are more experienced at casting them than I am at warding them off. just kidding. I have said it before and I will say it again, Karen you are the best and so are all the people on the list. This is the best County site, and I really appreciate the dedication and hard work that has gone into it on Karen's part and her conscripts, er, volunteers. O'Donnell, which was published in 1963. In one chapter he mentions the Chicago and Eastern Illinois (C&EI) Railroad coming to town, and he discusses the danger it was to livestock. "Livestock in the early day were a constant source of trouble between the railroads and the farmers. Stock would be killed and it was, of course, always the fault of the railroads. In one case a farmer had a hog killed by a train and since he believed himself to have some ability as a poet, wrote the railroad claim agent as follows: My razorback strolled down your track, A week ago today. Your #29 came down the line, And snuffed his life away. You can't blame me; the hog you see, Slipped through a cattle gate; So kindly pen a check for ten, The debt to liquidate. He was surprised a few days later to receive the following: Old #29 came down the line, And killed your hog, we know; But razorbacks on railroad tracks, Quite often meet with woe. Therefore, my friend, we cannot send, The check for which you pine, Just plant the dead; place o'er his head; 'Here lies a foolish swine.' " Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. 3. Hi! I've been "listening in" on this list for a couple of weeks. Lots of exciting things are happening! I am very impressed with the Huerfano County site. I wish all counties had this much information! My families - Frankenbery, Christison, and Erwin - lived in LaVeta off and on from 1880-1916 or so. Enos and Margaret (Ella) Frankenbery moved there in 1880. I believe all their children were born in LaVeta: Rosine Belle Frankenbery m. Lewis Christison (my g-grandparents) Laura Frankenbery m. Alfred Erwin Roy Frankenbery One of the interesting facts I found on the Huerfano County site was the Baker mine a.k.a. the Frankenberry or Middle Creek mine. I'd really like to know more about this. I just noticed on the 2001 Conference page that there is a Huerfano County Mining museum. Can someone tell me how to get in touch with the museum? Thank you, Gayle Gresham
