    1. [COHUERFA] passing it on it our kids...
    2. John & Janet Wasson
    3. The process of tracing our family is an arduous one- secrets, lost records, memories gone; but the effort is "rubbing off". Family near and far is now searching through boxes, and closets and looking for that Family Bible-genealogy is contagious! But, the story I want to share is of my daughter. Her great grandparents are buried in a nearby National Cemetery, and we visit often.( I never met my husbands grandparents, but his grandma, bless her heart, touches me deeply. In her bible, in every spare space, she wrote names, and dates, and tidbits of family history--without her effort to record these lives, I'd of been lost in the search. You can feel how much she cared for them all.) On one trip with our daughter to the cemetery we explain all the while, about the people buried there-Cavalry soldiers, unknown children,World War Vets-and about Grandpa John and Grandma Bessie. She stood and pondered the stone for her great grandparents; walked a few steps and picked a handful of wild flowers-placed them on top of the stone and said...." There, now they will know we love them and they won't be lonely". Tears in my eyes, I think "this is pretty profound for a 4 year old".And... this is why we do what we do--to pass it on.

    3. "Ancestors" By: Nellie Winslow Simmons Randall If you could see your ancestors All standing in a row, Would you be proud of them? Or don't you really know? Strange discoveries are sometimes made, In climbing the family tree. Occasionally one is found in line Who shocks his progeny. If you could see your ancestors All standing in a row, Perhaps there might be one or two You wouldn't care to know Now turn the question right about, And take another view. When you shall meet your ancestors, Will they be proud of you?

It is beautifully composed and tells the story that we all are trying to express. Thank you for your contribution to all the other people out there who are trying to find their family linage. God Bless----Virginia

He gave up this idea, however, when it was pointed out to him that the inhabitants of Cyprus are known as Cypriots. Roderick Drummond [email protected]

    3. Hi Taylor and all, WOW! Only 31 pages to go. I'm impressed. That sounds like alot until you consider all the pages and the time Taylor and all the volunteers have put into this project. I still say I have the greatest volunteers on the Huerfano County web site. I wish all the County sites were as lucky! Has anyone taken a look at the Pueblo pages yet? They are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~copueblo/index.html I built the Huerfano pages with the red white and blue theme and the trees. I built the Taos pages with the New Mexico theme. Now Pueblo I built just for me! And I think it's pretty nice. But I don't mind constructive criticism so if anyone wants to let me know what you think, please do. I'm having some problems with the Cemeteries page, it's out of whack, but you can get a general idea. Hope to fix that this afternoon. Of course it's a long way from Huerfano or Taos pages. Sorry I haven't been online too much lately, I don't understand it, but life gets in the way sometime. <grin> But then I notice the List has been pretty quiet lately so I assume everyone is out doing their gardening and enjoying the sun. The weather here has been just beautiful! It was 85 yesterday. We are still getting some of our Spring winds but it's not too bad. Let me hear from all of you! When last seen they were busy discussing "the old days" in LaVeta with my parents, and Shirley is itching to get back to her computer! I so enjoyed meeting Shirley "off the list"--even though she & Dick knew me when I was small. It was neat to sit and listen to them all reminisce of the people and places I used to know. Looking forward to having her back on-line too! Janet

    3. I called the Parish this morning and they were surprised to find they were on the internet. The information was orignaly sent to the Parish family to see if there was interest in reprinting this book. She was happy to hear from someone outside the Parish and placed my name on the list as someone who wants a copy of the book. If she gets enough names to want the book the Parish will have it reprinted looks like it's getting close for the reprint. "The San Jose Parish Council of Los Ojos, New Mexico, is considering whether or not to reprint El Primer Siglo: A Centennial History of San Jose Parish Los Ojos, New Mexico, 1883-1983 The history was published in 1983 as part of the parish centennial celebration that year. Authored by now retired New Mexico State Historian, Robert J. Torrez, the initial printing of 1000 copies quickly sold out. nearly twenty years later, the parish council is trying to determine if there would be enough demand to warrant the cost of a reprint and would like to hear from anyone that would be interested in a copy if the reprint is done. The book is 69 pages in length and includes numerous never before (or since) published photographs of this northern New Mexico region. The reprint will probably retail for around $20.00 and a discount would be available to retailers and organizations that might be interested in copies for resale. Los Ojos, which may be known to some as Park View, is located in northern Rio Arriba County and is one of the original settlements established in the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant, circa 1860. The parish was established in 1883 and served a huge area that included much of northwest New Mexico. El Primer Siglo remains one of very few sources of reliable history and information about those ancestors who emigrated from the Abiquiu region not only to the Tierra Amarilla grant, but to the 1870s settlements along the San Juan River If you are interested in a copy or several, contact the San Jose Parish Council at P. O. Box 6, Los Ojos, NM 87551, or Rev. Salvador Aragon, OFM, at (505) 588-7473 and let them know."

    1. [COHUERFA] Ownership
    2. Our government at work! Bureaucracy at its Finest ACTUAL CASE - A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted if he could prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being offered as collateral. The title to the property dated back to 1803, which took the lawyer 3 months to track down. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply (actual letter): "Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented an application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear title back to its origin." Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual letter): "Your letter regarding title in Case 189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have title extended further than the 194 years covered by the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working in the property area, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the U.S. from France in 1803, the year of origin identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by then reigning monarch, Isabella. The good queen, being a pious woman and careful about titles, almost as much as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to fund Columbus' expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that He also made that part of the world called Louisiana. He, therefore, would be the owner of origin. I hope you find His original claim to be satisfactory. Now, may we have our loan?" They got it.

    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lee Zion" <[email protected]> When we think of the old west transportation system we tend to think that weeks or months were required to travel across the county. "Colorado Post Offices" has a photo of a letter turned in to the Denver City office of the Central Overland - California and Pikes Peak Express company which was date stamped Denver City, K.T., October 16, 1860. It arrived in St. Joseph, Missouri on the 23rd. The last date is a New York City directory service cancellation October 26th, 1860 when it was forwarded to Rockland, Maine. Compare that 10 day Denver to New York transit time to the "5-7 business days" that is the quoted ground delivery standard over the same route 141 years later. And it only cost three cents to mail.
