    3. Hi List members! After a four day visit in Denver, I am back home. For all of you that have asked about the fires...from where I live, I travel I-25 from Colorado City to Denver. The only place there was smoke was at Castle Rock, between Denver and Colorado Springs, and just a slight haze. So there's not much that you will notice if you are coming through here. The last I heard we have lost 200,000 acres. For those of you that do plan a trip here around July 4th, please be aware that there is a total ban on fireworks in Colorado this year. Do not bring any into the state as you will be ticketed, fined, and possibly jailed. This Thursday night we have a Community meeting to activate plans for evacuation in the event there is a fire here. Here in Colorado City we have finally gone on water restrictions. I don't hear alot of grumbling about it as we all knew it was coming and understand the need for it. Plans are being laid for the National Guard to deliver drinking water to each home, if the need arises. We are all hoping that won't be the case. On Sunday the 9th, I attended the first lecture that our Community is planning on holding every second Sunday of the month. This month's lecture was on Fremont's 4th expedition and was presented by "Moon" Mullins. It was extremely interesting and Mr. Mullins gave a very well presented lecture. As you all probably know, the expedition was to find the best rail road route from the east coast to the west coast and went through Pueblo and Huerfano Counties. Next month the lecture will be by Wilfred Martinez, who will be speaking on the battle of Querno Verde. Querno Verde means Green Horn, which is how our area got it's name. It was right here that Chief Querno Verde fought his final battle. The actual battle site has recently been found so it will be an interesting lecture. As far as I know, the 1880 Huerfano census should be online any day now, Mary Ann and Maggie are working to get it posted. Again, my THANKS to everyone who worked on the project and especially to Taylor for doing the transcription! I will let you all know as soon as I am notified that it is on line. Most of the work I have been doing at the library has been on more obits. And I am still trying to get all the ones we did before into a database so it can be posted. The problem is that I am having to re-format the ones that were in word processors to fit the correct lines in the database, and I'm having to go through and put "Pueblo Chieftain" on the ones that did not have it. Once I have a full obit in the database I then have to go back and put the name in, surname first, so the database will sort properly. So you see why I haven't built any new pages recently. That and trying to keep up with my yard has kept me busy. And I am now teaching Aquasize two nights a week. Before we got started on the 1880 census I had asked for help with more obits. Due to the extent of the census project the obits just kind of went by the wayside. I am again asking for help with the obits. What I want to do is get the ones we have posted, then start sending out more for volunteers to type up. To volunteer for this phase you MUST have Microsoft Word and Excel!!! PLEASE try to help out here if you can. I would sure appreciate it. If I can just get this first part done, then we can move on to other projects that are sitting here waiting to be done. I would like to accomplish this ASAP. Please remember that almost all of the towns are still up for adoption at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cohuerfa/towns.html If you haven't adopted a town please consider doing so. If you HAVE adopted a town and I don't have your name posted please contact me right away, either I lost it in the shuffle or I didn't get your message. Also, will the Town Coordinators for the following towns please check in with me: Cuchara Camps, Shirley Jamison Rattlesnake Buttes, Shirley Jamison Oakview, Shalane Sheley-Cruz Cucharas, Doug Cordova Please let me know what you are doing with your pages and if you need help, or when you plan on posting. My THANKS to all who sent get well cards and warm wishes my way when I fractured my foot. It's almost healed and hopefully I will be back in full motion soon. THANK YOU! As soon as I am able I plan to start filming and doing field work again, and I invite any of you to join me in Huerfano County if you are going to be here. Guess that's it for today, so you all take care, and let me hear from you! Karen Mitchell 2002 has been declared "The Year of "Unity". Pass it on. Well, it means some servers will be unavailable during this time unavailable and we are asking for your patience. For up-to-date information about the different resources, you can visit http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ as the move progresses. o List Administrators: When the time comes to move list servers, we will be halting operation on the machine to complete the move. We expect to have the machines down the least amount of time possible. No mail will be sent from or posted to your mailing lists. We do not expect to lose any messages. o Board Administrators: Nothing, unless your board happens to be gatewayed to a mailing list then the information for list administrators apply. o Web Pages: FTP will be down so that changes can't be made to pages until everything is working correctly on the new servers. There will be a short time that the pages will not be available as the transfer takes place. 1. [COHUERFA] humor

    3. HUMOR. Thanks to Lynda Webster for sending this inspiring tale. John's prized chicken John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred Young layers, called pullets, and eight roosters, whose job was to fertilize the eggs. He kept records and any rooster or pullet that didn't perform well went into the pot and was replaced. This took an awful lot of time, so John got a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Now he could sit and fill out an efficiency report by listening to the sound of the bells. John's favorite rooster was old Brewster. A very fine specimen he was, but his bell had not rung all morning. Curious, John went to investigate. Several roosters were chasing pullets, bells a-ringing, but Brewster had his bell in his beak so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up to a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud, he entered him in the county fair. Brewster was an overnight sensation. The judges not only awarded Brewster the No Bell Prize but also The Pullet Surprise. 1. [COHUERFA] Shortcuts
    2. Karen Mitchell
    3. SHORTCUTS by Ted Pack [email protected] http://www.tedpack.org/ For a brief, unhappy period of my life my morning commute was Two hours long, on a freeway. Inevitably, at some point along the way, traffic would slow to a crawl across all five west- bound lanes. I'd come around a curve or over a hill, notice a sea of brake lights ahead of me, take my foot off the gas and come to a safe, slow, gradual stop. Also inevitably, some other driver, usually in a Datsun B-210 with primer-gray quarter- panels, would see the same situation and decide that he could find the shortcut, the magic lane that hadn't jammed. He'd dart from lane to lane like a hummingbird on methamphetamine, until he either ended up in the median strip with a windshield full of oleander leaves or slammed on his brakes at the last minute, laying down four dollars worth of rubber in skid marks. Just after college, and long before my commuting days, I taught in a secondary school in Borneo as a Peace Corps Volunteer. One of my students wanted to be a lawyer, which he saw as a stepping stone to becoming Prime Minister of Malaysia. I tried to tell him that meant studying hard enough to get into Form 6 (a sort of elite junior college), then three years of University, then three years of law school. He, however, had seen an advertisement for a community college in Canada, which offered a two-year course in Law Enforcement to secondary school graduates. He was convinced he had found a magic shortcut. Nothing I could say or do would convince him that the course he found was for police officers, not lawyers. Some genealogists, in a mad rush to collect as many individuals as fast as they can, think they too have found a magic shortcut. You can download GEDCOM files from half a dozen major sites on the Internet or from WFT CDs. You can get them from fellow genealogists, too. Buy a couple of CDs, surf the Internet for a few weeks, download as fast as you can and Bingo -- you have 50,000 individuals in your tree. That's ten times as many as the little old lady at the county genealogy society who has been working on her collection since 1962, with a pencil, paper and SASE's. (Neener, neener, neener.) There is a problem, however. Not all of the data out there is accurate. Look at Jacob BLANKENBAKER, who appears in the LDS Ancestral File, available online at http://www.familysearch.org/ . Jacob BLANKENBAKER (AFN: FX0M-QR) Birth: 18 Jan 1725 Germanna, Spotsylvania, Virginia Death: 02 Jan 1753 xxxx, Jefferson, Kentucky Jacob had two spouses; Spouse: Mary Barbara THOMAS (AFN: FX0M-RX) Marriage: 1752 Spouse: Hannah WEAVER (AFN: FX0N-19) Marriage: 1 Feb 1791, Culpeper, Virginia Children: Elizabeth, born 3 Jan 1754 Samuel, born 31 Jul 1754 Henry, born 25 Jun 1756 Frank, born Abt 1756 Nicholas Born 6 Oct 1758 Abraham, born 6 Oct 1758 Thomas, born 2 Jan 1762 So, according to the AF, Jacob fathered seven children from the grave, and had the strength to marry a second time 38 years after he died. You'll note also that his first children, Elizabeth and Samuel, were twins, born six months apart. The volunteers at my Family History Center tell me the AF is 75% accurate; this family is one of the other 25%. When you click on "Submitters," the problem becomes obvious. Eleven people contributed data to that little family. It looks like the program that merged all of the data still has some bugs in it. Still, it put Jacob out there on the Internet for the world to download. Atleast five people on RootsWeb's WorldConnect have Jacob in their data exactly as he is on the AF, errors and all. You can't tell where they copied him from, but you can bet they did it quickly. I had Jacob, with no death date and a note saying something was suspicious about his first two children. A long-time BLANKENBAKER researcher, Donna Smith/Bowen, put a post-em on my RootsWeb WorldConnect data, giving accurate birth dates for Elizabeth and Samuel. I wrote to thank her and ask her for her sources. She wrote "My sources are Lela BLANKENBAKER / HARRIS' DAR Records of Samuel BLANKENBAKER, family members and a lot of reading -- court records, wills, marriage books and family histories." Not a shortcut in any one of them, you'll note. The Internet is wonderful. It has a lot of clues, and a lot of accurate data. Be careful, though; it isn't a magic shortcut.

You say you'll be in Stirling while your there, planning on being near Campsie, its close to the town of Lennoxtown? His mother Catherine Ferguson was from there. Do you already know the Scot side of your family history? If you have any missing pieces, you'd love the NRH in Edinburgh. I went in 2000. For this book, the very earliest dates of baptisms at the Cathedral in Santa Fe were transcribed. To see which microfilm numbers were used, see www.nmgs.org/chrchs-sfe.htm.

The information in this website has given me a considerable amount of information, however, I am still attempting to find any additional information. Could you possibly direct, or assist me in my endeavor? My great grandfather was Jose Benito Cruz, and his father was Mariano Cruz. Jose Benito's son Elias was my grandfather. Elias married Maria Modesta Pineda, and they had (I believe 13 children), my father Ernest is one of their sons. Ernest was born in 1923 in Walsenburg, and he married Juanita Mckeehan (Cisneros). Juanita's father Vaiden Mckeehan was adopted by the Cisneros family somewhere between 1908 and 1912, and that is why I am unsure of my mothers last name. Could you possibly help in my search? Any assistance you provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you John Cruz
