Welcome back Karen! You have been missed. I look forward to your emails and all the helpful hints. No more crashing, K? Linda
I saw a mention of Smith family group sheets missing. I never sent any in but am interested in Smith's of LaVeta. We are of the Silas Lemuel Smith (born June 28, 1879 in Hayesville, N.C.) family. Silas and his wife Leomia Eliz (Brown) brought two young sons to LaVeta and raised many more children. When his wife died, he married Hannah on Nov. 5, 1914. They had children of their own. First set of children: Herchal Otis, Thomas Wayne, Joseph Ray, Evelyn Ruth, Melvin Lyle, Geneva Mae. The next set of children were: Elvin George, Emmett Lee, Anna Marie, William Glenn. Hannah has a child of her own before this marriage named Edna Lois (Pittman). It was my understanding that all the children moved away from LaVeta area after they became adults. Looking for any one who is a member of this family or who has any history of this family. They came to LaVeta, Co. after 1902 and were there by 1904. They were connected to Kitchens and Goemmer families. The Kitchens came from Clay Co., North Carolina as well. Barb
Hi List members, Has anyone missed me? No, huh? <grin>. Well I'm still out here, but where that is, at this point I'm not sure!! I have experienced a major computer crash and for now just thankful I'm back online. If any of you have a drive crash in the future, take my advise, make it airborne out the window and go get another one <grin>. Boy, what a pain in the patooty this is. I had to tear the whole thing all the way down to DOS and start over. I finally have all of my programs re-loaded, some of which I had to re-purchase, but don't have all of my files back up yet. I'm still testing the programs to see if everything is working properly. And some aren't! I hope all of you had a happy Halloween, I couldn't even send out greetings on this stupid thing. It was so terribly cold here that I didn't get any little gremlins knocking on the door. So you know what that means, I have to eat all this candy all by myself...I just hate that (yeah right!). Okay back to the treadmill!!! We have entered our "down time" with the Lists and web sites. This is the time of year when everything slows way down. It's okay, but I miss the camaraderie with all of you. Usually I use this time to build new web pages and fine tune the sites. But this time I'm going to be just trying to get everything up and running right again. When the crash happened I lost so much data. Fortunately I had back ups of most of my files, and can re-construct some of the others. But there was a considerable loss. All of my Address Book is gone so I'm hunting addresses for everyone. If you've written to me and I haven't answered this is why, so please re-send your messages. I am sorry if anyone has felt neglected, believe me, it wasn't intentional. On our State List, our SC has opened dialog for keeping our Lists active and has used the Huerfano List as an example of a good List. She says: "Karen's Huerfano County list is a wonderful example of this. She always works with the list members to build a close rapport with them. She encourages them and they help her to provide more information for other visitors. She always finds transcribers, and helpers for any project she starts." That kudo goes out to everyone of you that have helped to make the Huerfano County web site what it is. Great job team!!! Our List has a good status due to all of you! So let's do our exercise now...put your right arm over your left shoulder, put your left arm over your right shoulder, now squeeze...that's a hug to you from me! (We good, uh huh we good <grin>!) Okay, so what do we have going...well you know all of those 6,000 obits that we've been working on? Guess where they went when this thing crashed <groan>. Luckily I had each month backed up on floppies but the database is gone and needs to be re-built. bang bang bang <that's my head hitting the desk>. Oh well, we shall overcome!!!! It's just going to take more time and re-formatting it all over again. One thing about it, I don't get to die to soon, I have to much work to do now. Let's see, this will take me up to about 306 years old. Yep, we can do it. Speaking of old, what month is this <hint, hint>. I had a very happy occasion this week. A lady wrote to me about the Rye cemetery and is trying to identify where her ggGrandmothers unmarked grave is so she can have it marked. She sent me a photo of her great grandfather standing by the grave. I studied the photo and every little thing in it, then I went to the Rye cemetery, searched around and came up with the exact spot that he was standing in. How exciting that was!! Now I have another unmarked grave identified and this family is just ecstatic. Well okay, it wasn't all that simple, it was much more technical, but you get the jist of it. I feel good about it. So that brings me to the next subject...old photos. If you have an old photo of an ancestor that you are trying to find, let someone unrelated look at the photo, they may see clues there that you've missed. And if any of you have photos of ancestors standing at a grave PLEASE contribute them. I would like to post those photos with the cemetery listing of that person. Have an old photo of someone by a grave but don't know what cemetery??? Share it, let's see if we can get them identified. Is the photo of a headstone that we already have posted? Guestimate what year it was taken and we can post those too. In comparing old photos to current ones, we see the changes that have taken place in the area. Do you have any old photos of the County in general? I would like to start posting all the old photos we can find, even if it just shows the country side. I have a few of these that I need to dig out of boxes and get scanned too, so if you have any, please contribute them. I had three more Family Group Sheets come in of the Smith family from LaVeta, but lost them during the crash, and don't have the contributors name or address. Whoever sent them in, PLEASE resubmit them so I can get them posted. Was it Carole? This summer sure put a dent in my plans and I do apologize to all of you for not accomplishing more work. Life just got in the way of my schedule. I sure miss all of you out there so let me hear from you again. Any suggestions for new databases or for the web site? Comments? You all take care and have a GREAT day! Karen

Hi List, I realize this is probably a pretty big favor to ask. However, I am looking for information from the 1910 census for La Vita, Huerfano County. I am trying to find any information at all on Martin Atyayde, father of my great aunt. This is the ONLY census he would be in because he died the next year, and before that he was in Mexico. MARTIN ATAYDE was born 1868 in Coahuila, Mexico, and died September 14, 1911. He married ASCENSION VIGIL 1909, daughter of JOSE VIGIL and MARIA VALDEZ. She was born June 17, 1881 in Cuchara, Huerfano County, CO, and died March 17, 1948. Martin Atayde was thought to be a Spaniard, well educated, and born to a wealthy family in Coahuila. Martin was connected with the Mexican government in some way. He was thought to have had a wife and two children in Coahuila. When Martin Atayde was exiled, possibly for gun running, he was unable to return to Mexico. Martin Atayde started a new life, in La Vita, Huerfano County, CO with a new wife, Ascension Vigil, and fathered Lydia and Martina prior to his untimely death by a fall into a mine shaft. When he died, the Mexican government sent a flag and a certificate to his family. There items were stored away in a trunk and left with a relative for safe keeping over 70 years ago. His widow, ASCENSION VIGIL was working as a cook in a mining boardinghouse when she met and married Jose Petrolino Garcia. Children of MARTIN ATAYDE and ASCENSION VIGIL are: i. LYDIA ATAYDE, b. April 16, 1910, La Vita, Huerfano County; d. August 1976, Crystal, Hennepin County, MN ii. MARTINA ATAYDE, was born after her fathers death, in La Vita, Huerfano County. Martina would love to find the items her mother left for safe keeping with relatives. She is 91 years old now and has known nothing about her father for all these years. So I said I would try to see if anyone out there can do a census lookup and give me the information on is as a starting point to see if I can find more information on Martin. I appreciate any help anyone can give me one this. Marji Sorley

According to the census, Manuel Apodaca could have been her brother. She had a nephew by the name of Crespen Apodaca who could be great great grandfather to some living today. Rita was an indian girl raised on a reservation. Some in the family believe Apache,Mescelero,Jicarillo. We are still trying to confirm this. Abran Diaz and Maria diaz were two of their children that I knew of. The census of 1870 in San Miguel County, town of Jourupa shows they had also: Petra, Teofilo,Tsidora and Julianna.Maybe even more, I haven't completed my research. Abran's first wife was Cevaria. They had a son named Doroteo. But ended up with a total of nine. His second wife was Fernanda Cruz. He was 20 years older than her. He had 15 more kids. I have other names, but won't mention them unless you think there is a link...be in touch..

Hi Joyce, I sent you an email off the List but it bounced back to me so hopefully you will get this one. Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Mitchell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Hello Joyce, I am the Huerfano County Coordinator. The Gardner Protestant Cemetery was slated to be filmed this summer but unfortunately I broke my foot so I couldn't get it done. Hopefully I will be able to get to it now in the fall. Once the photos are taken I will then post them to our web site where you can download the ones of your family stones. You may also want to order their obits. You can do this by contacting the Spanish Peaks Library where they have the old papers on microfilm. The address is on our web site and their email address is: [email protected] I think they charge a dollar plus postage, but ask them about that first. I do obituary lookups but I have to charge $10.00 each for them because Walsenburg is 1/2 hour from me. Plus right now I am pretty well swamped. So only use me as a last resort. But if need be, I WILL get them for you. I just think they will serve you quicker. It seems to me that several years ago someone was researching the Mockmore name but I sure can't remember who it was, nor do I have it in my records. Of the Gribble name you will want to contact Louise Adams at: [email protected] She has done extensive research on the Gribble family and is a wonderful, warm lady. Please also note there is a couple of the Gribble family in the Brookside Cemetery that Louise is not related to but may be your family. Those photos are online. Please feel free to contribute a scanned photo of Wilhemina to our photos page, so many people have posted photos and have been contacted by long lost relatives. As for the death certificates, they usually list the informants name and the parents of the deceased and the descendants marital status. The information is only as good as the informant. To find addresses for vital records for any of the United States try this: http://www.vitalrec.com/ I do hope this has been some help to you. By the way, do you know that our Las Animas County Coordinator lives in Australia also? His name is Leon Moya, but right now I'm not sure which city he lives in. And I'm curious, if your family was in Colorado, how did you get all the way to Australia? Please do let me know if I can assist you any further. Karen Mitchell
Hi, Im new to this list, so this is my first request for help. Im researching the HARTMANN/ HOLTZ/ MUELLER/ MEOLLER Families from Germany & Iowa, USA. Wilhelmina (various spellings) HARTMANN imigrated to America, I dont know when or on what ship. She was born 1833 Oathfresan, Hanover, Germany and married 1st to Fred HOLTZ in 1859 at Muscatine Co, Muscatine, Iowa, USA. I presume that it would have been around this time that she imigrated. They had two daughters Lena Lucy b 1860 and Lucy Rebecca b 1862. Fred died 1863 resulting from the Civil War and Wilhelmina remarried Charles John MUELLER/MOELLER at Muscatine, Iowa. This union resulted in four known children and probably could be five. They were Elizabeth, Lydia, Margaret & Charles Emanuel. Wilhelmena & Charles MOELLER are both buried in the Gardner Cemetery, Huerfano, Colorado, USA. as is Lucy & Eli MOCKMORE , and Elizabeth & Frederick GRIFFITH. I believe that I have a photo of Wilhelmina and two of her daughters, also a photograph sent to Australia and on the reverse side it mentions Maggie GRIBBLE, Lydia CLARK (Canada), Lucy MOCKMORE, Lizzie GRIFFITH & Lena ROCHE (not present). These are four cousins. If anyone knows anything about these families at all I would appreciate any help. How do I obtain death ceertificates from America, as I live in Australia and can some kind person tell me what information I could hope to find on a death certificate? Is there anyone who would be willing to photograph headstones in Gardner cemetery?? Looking forward to receiving heaps of replies. Many thanks in anticipation of a great result. Yours Kindly Joyce Bryant a Hartmann descendant living in Australia
I received an email at work from Judy Lowe requesting info about Sears,Samuel. Our Email Server found a virus in it and it was taken care of. You need to delete it if you have not opened it. Cecelia
