    3. Karen, You can find it at three NM bookstores by going to abe.com and searching for Lady of Taos or Richard Luna. All three are available to order online. 1. Sheriff Farr & Sam Ketchum
    2. Can anyone help this gentleman? Subj: Sheriff Farr & Sam Ketchum Date: 10/28/2004 2:46:24 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: berrys@hal-pc.org To: LAdams2341@aol.com I just ran across an old post to a mail list regarding Sheriff Ed Farr of Colorado USA. It's interesting that a ggranddaughter of Sam Ketchum, Carolyn Ketchum, lives in Eastbourne, E.Sussex, UK. I am ggrandson of Sam Ketchum, and Carolyn and I are first cousins. It's even more interesting that the ultimate book about the Ketchum gang was written by Jeff Burton, who lives in London. He is releasing an updated and expanded book in a few months. The original book was DYNAMITE & SIX SHOOTER published in 1962. I just returned from a week in New Mexico, and went up to the hideout cave in the mountains above Cimmaron, NM where the shoot out between the Ketchum gang and the Farr posse took place. I took some pictures of the cave. I also went to Folsom, NM to get pictures of the Twin Mountain where the train robbery took place that precipitated the chase and shoot out. Do you have an address or phone number for any Farr descendants in the US. I was told that his great grandson lived in Denver or Trinidad? I would like to correspond with someone who might have any factual tidbits about this incident. I have been researching the genealogy of this Ketchum family for 30+ years. 3. Hi everyone, I want to thank all of you for your thoughts and opinions on the issue of opening my home to researchers. I will give it more thought and discuss it further with the other CC's, and let you know what is decided. You have all given me some very good points to think about, so for now, let's move on. Has anyone heard from our little Sheri in Texas? I had asked that anyone that's working on one of our projects to please check in and I haven't heard from her so now I am concerned. Sheri, if you're out there, your list Mom wants to you come home now. (grin) So far, on the cemetery extraction project we are doing, the letters A C E G I Q are all done. Letters assigned are B D F H J K M and it will only be a little while before those are done. So you can see I need more volunteers with Excel to help out on this project. While the volunteers are doing this I am transcribing records that we don't have online yet from the cemeteries. When all of this is done, the databases will all be merged and we should have a fairly comprehensive list for each cemetery. Then it will just be a matter of updating the database each time Louise does an Obituary update or we get new data in. I'm real excited about this project and hope we can conclude it before the end of the year. THANK YOU to all the volunteers working on this project, Mary, Tammy, Sheri, Brandi, Judi, Frank, Zale, Cathy, and Taylor. Anyone else want to help out? All you need is Excel. PLEASE? Ilene is currently working on some more marriages for the Huerfano page. THANK YOU Ilene! Anyone in Pueblo County want to start on the Pueblo marriages? We are sadly lacking on that page. And of course our own Louise is working on the Obit update, which is going to add a whole bunch of new obits to that page. THANK YOU Louise! We have 2 wonderful new volunteers working with us now, both for Pueblo County. Jean is extracting the "News of the Day" and has sent in quite a bit of data, THANK YOU Jean! Sharon has been out at Roselawn Cemetery taking photos and sending them to me. Sharon happens to be in the area and saw my plea for help and she just jumped right in! THANK YOU Sharon! You all let these ladies know that their work is appreciated. I have also had 2 more offers of help and I'm working with those folks now to fit them into projects that they would like to do. One person said they want to become more involved because they like the atmosphere here on our lists. That's so sweet. Yes we do truly appreciate our volunteers and contributors. THANKS to ALL of you! Other projects going on right now are the Veterans database, Biographies, census, and let's see, I think there's one or two more but I can't think right now. (grin) That's the report for now, hope we hear from more volunteers and if anyone has any new ideas please let me know. Hugs for all, Karen

    3. Awhile back someone sent me a photo of their Father's headstone, Donald G. Vigil, at North Veta Cemetery. I created the link, loaded up the photo and went on about my merry way. Yesterday I was checking that page and couldn't get that photo to load so I checked it. Somehow I accidentally loaded the photo up as a binary file. Which of course is not going to show. And of course the original email is long gone. Whoever sent me that photo, please accept my sincere apologies and please re-send me the photo. I feel horrible about this but I hope you know that it was an innocent mistake. Hope to hear from the Vigil family real soon. Karen

    2. I'm afraid I must add to the negative discussion for this idea. Karen's heart is in the right place, always the preservation of Colorado history, but I do not think the end results would justify the risk involved in opening her private domain to outsiders. However, if she wanted to issue a personal invitation to those who have a long-standing relationship with the Huerfano and Pueblo County sites, those with whom she has interacted favorably over the years and also interested in preserving Colorado history, I would not have reservations. Ultimately, the final decision is in her hands. Louise

    3. ok, just to LOL (because rick's p.s. is so true & very funny).... i had a recent visit from, well let's just say they are not MY family but belong to that wonderful man they produced (so i remember that, especially when they're here).... to our new house, for which we haven't quite been able to get everything done yet....like we've waited to put all the pictures up until eveything else is done....to see where things "want" to be hung....& when they were here, the first night, while we were sleeping in....they put up all the pictures, thru out our house....i don't know if anyone else would have been upset but i sure was....my poor hubby....it was all i could do NOT to take them all down until they were gone. ALSO! & @ least it's in the realm of genealogy. the ONLY thing i have from my father's mother, my dear sweet grandmother, whom i love & cherish so much & miss terribly, is her & my granddad's bedroom furniture. they saved & saved for it. circa 1930, beautiful but old & delicate but still usable. the bed was a little shaky, so i myself, cut new bed boards & than thoughtfully sandwhiched the bed between two dressers, so that it had extra support & i thought, as well, it would give each person a nightstand, albeit a bit tall as they are dressers. AND, they were the "cool" type of 1930's furniture, they have rollers....rusty old rollers....which i carefully found carpet stays in the color of our carpet so you couldn't see them, cut & put them under each foot. THEY MOVED THEM. don't know why but they moved both the dresser & bed away from the other dresser so their was room between each & didn't see the rollers or stays. so the rusty rollers were resting on our carpet, which we didn't pick out but we are trying to maintain & is light grey! for 4 days i didn't see it....THEY MOVED OUR FURNITURE! i couldn't believe it! nice rusty rollers on light grey carpet.... let's just put it this way....they stayed the night b4 they left downtown @ the market (for those of you who don't know the seattle fish market is famous & a wonderful, year round open air market) & it was ALL i could do not to push them out of the car! my poor hubby the ride home wasn't as pleasant for him as he thought it was going to be....tee hee! taylor ps. i do LOVE them dearly....i'm just learning how to be a good d.i.l....i'm still learning & learning & learning & learning....so rick's comment on your kinfolk staying w/you, let alone genealogists???? that might be the first reason to just say no....lol! >From: "Rick Paddock" <rick-0292-paddock@earthlink.net> >To: COHUERFA-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: Re: [COHUERFA] "Staying at Karen's" >Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 11:22:54 -0600 > >I agree. 3. good points! after reading some of the comments, especially security....it does make you think about it. i don't know how the bed & breakfast's do it, i don't know how much or how feasible it is to do credit ck's or reference cks? i could see a page on the web describing the place & rules (we just went to a b & b & we used only website ones so we could actually "see" the property/area), such as no children, no pets, that kind of thing....but than again i'm not sure if all of that is what you are wanting & it might be more of a headache than it's worth....there would be the management of it, as tho it were a b & b.... also, does anyone know if you do that, do you need any kind of permits? business thingys? certain codes? & although i have not done mapping of cemeteries in colorado, i did do one for eastern oregon & it was also small....it took me & my hubby a long, long time. arlene is right on w/the length of time etc....it might cause some difficult feelings if someone promised but didn't realize how long it might take, or how long it took to get to the location or bad weather/snakes/bears etc. hampering efforts, than what do you do? i don't know if it might be an idea to do a "work/training" program, for new genealogists, to come out do cemetery recording work & karen trains them? learning, literally from the ground up (sorry, i can't help myself!) or for those that want to voluteer & stay & do work & than have access to records, or have karen take them to records? i'm just thinking out loud here so perhaps i better stop b4 i come up w/something really terrible! hope everyone is well! taylor >From: MAX3939@webtv.net (Arlene Johnston) >To: COHUERFA-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [COHUERFA] "Staying at Karen's" >Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 20:09:02 -0700 > > >Hi Karen, > >I guess I'm going to say something about the possible down side. >Remember I live in the greater Los Angeles area. 8 to 10 million >people. 3. Hi Karen, I guess I'm going to say something about the possible down side. Remember I live in the greater Los Angeles area. 8 to 10 million people. I see lots of not so great behavior. Not everyone that does genealogy is older with grown children. There are lots of younger people with young children. People that would come there are on vacation so they bring there kids and possibly animals. I see kids in stores and restaurants that are allowed to run wild. The parents ignore them. They damage things and they dirty things. I don't mean that all kids are like that, but you don't know what you'll get til they are there. Also, if they bring their animals, you don't have a fenced yard. After saying all of that, I just mean that you would have to have some hard and fast rules that people are aware of before they come so if there are any problems, the rules would take care of them. Yes you house is very very nice. For the list, Karen has a 3 bedroom house, one used for her office. Living room, dining room, kitchen, breakfast room and den. A veryyyyyy large yard on top of a hill. At nite there are a million stars and the lights of Rye behind the house. There are only a couple of houses anywhere near. It is very rural. No one has fenced yards. One other thing, one of the people said in their answer that they could take a day or so to help photograph cemeteries. Let me tell you one day is not enough. By the standard here in So. Ca. St Mary's is a very very tiny cemetery. It took four of us one day and 3 of us 2 more days and half the cemetary had already been photographed. And then Karen had to go back later to take some more pictures of the ones that did not come out. Expect to give her at least 2 full days and possibly more. It is hard dirty work but very rewarding when you see the results. Arlene

    3. BINGO!!! We have a winner! LOL Doesn't take much to make me happy! Hi Richard, THANK YOU so very much for volunteering. And also, thank you for the kind words, I do appreciate them, but I couldn't do it all without my wonderful volunteers who all hold a special place in my heart. I will write to you privately to set something up. Hugs, Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Paddock Jr" <rsp40@earthlink.net> Being only recently signed up with the Huerfano mail list, I'd just like to express my gratitude to Karen for her work in serving as list "Mom" and if one takes notice, most of the great website content is done by her as well. It has been a great help to me in my research. Thanks again and keep up the good work. List managers often get little thanks for the time they put in. And by the way, I will volunteer to help with any cemetery readings, etc., as long as we don't do it in a blizzard or frigid cold weather. ----- Original Message ----- From: Karen Mitchell To: COHUERFA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 9:46 AM Subject: [COHUERFA] sending emails Hi everyone, I would like to relate to you an incident that came up recently and how it can affect your research. They were: "Please find my man" "URGENT ASSISTANCE NEEDED" "He's out there somewhere" Being on so many lists throughout the 3 projects we are part of plus all the other things I've got going, please realize that my email address is really "out there", and I get a ton of Spam. If I can't relate to the Subject line, that email goes right in the delete can. I know many other CC's also do this. We can not risk opening a spam email that is unrecognizable to us and risk having our computers hit with a virus or a worm. Right now, I have 11 projects going on for my 3 counties, and I can't risk losing all that data, and having to start all over again. PLEASE folks, when you are writing to someone, in the Subject line of your email, put some wording that the receiver can identify with. Otherwise your email may get deleted without the person ever opening it. If you don't know what to put, at least put the surname or County, such as "Smith, Pueblo County". 3. Karen: Regarding you offer to put up people in your home as a bed and breakfast in return for assistance in research, I think it's a great idea. However, Karen, it would be only fair to you for people to at least pay for any food they would eat. Having them stay in a house that doesn't cost you any more or less because they're there is one thing, but having to put out for food could dent your pocketbook. Shalane

But again, everyone, this is still in the thinking stages so I need everyone to pitch in here and help me see the pitfalls, I already know the benefits. On the other list, as well as from a few of you here, that the biggest issue would be security. But what other issues are there? THANK YOU all for your thoughts. Karen
