The family moved first near Rocky Ford where the father worked on construction of the railroad, living later near Pueblo, Wray, and Minturn. Later they moved to Middle Park and his father homesteaded on the Blue River and several years later bought the Jack Palmer place, part of the present home ranch. On October 25,1903 he married Stella "Dolly" Becker and lived on the upper ranch on the Troublesome where their boys, Ralph, Clyde, Frank and Orley were born. In 1914, they built the present house where Orley Pickering and his wife still live. They continued ranching until they turned the management of the home ranch over to their son. They lived in a newer smaller house near the home until Mrs. Pickering passed away in July, 1961. About a year later, Mr. Pickering went to Denver where he resided at the Pierce Hotel until failing health caused him to enter Charm Acres Nursing Home. Mr. and Mrs. Pickering celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at their home on the ranch on October 25, 1953 with a reception given by their sons and their families.
