    3. Being on the list might discourage people - after the twenty-or-so monthly checkin messages, there's not much exciting info. If she were on the Rootsweb email list for message boards for a few counties - especially one where she lives, the emails would be more interesting. And if she were a lookup volunteer for her home county, that would be more interesting (and would give more positive feedback to her). If her local library has some reference books for Colorado genealogy, she could - I'm an optimist - be a lookup volunteer to a lot of counties. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Billie Walsh" <bilwalsh@swbell.net> To: <cogen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 11, 2012 10:17 AM Subject: [COGEN] Volunteers on the list? I'm kind of the "new-kid-on-the-block" on the CoGenWeb. Still feeling my way around a bit. I've been talking to Gail about Cindy, the lady that volunteered to do transcriptions, being on the list as a volunteer. I feel like it might be a good idea and help out with communication between her and any CC's that might wish to take advantage of her generous offer. Gail said it wasn't allowed. She suggested I take it up with you all. There's nothing in the USGenWeb [ USGW ] against it. The USGW simply states that all CC's have to be on the list. It doesn't address any other volunteers. I feel like allowing those that volunteer for other things than CC might feel more like a "part of the family", as it were. They might at some point feel like even adopting a county if they feel like they are already part of the group. So What's the opinion of the group? Should volunteers other than CC's be allowed on the list? -- “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government lest it come to dominate our lives and interests”. - Patrick Henry - _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to COGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

The bottom line is that the USGW says the list has to be here and you have to be on it. To me that means that this is YOUR list and it is/will be whatever you all make of it. If you all are like me you are probably on way to many mail lists. This one is one you have no choice about. The list doesn't have to be all about check-ins and state business. On another state list we had a long thread about old family recipes. On that list we crow about a new branch on the family tree or blow off steam when someone jumps your case about something on your site(s). I discovered two "cousins" by our chit-chat on the list. If your doing research for something and come across something that would be of interest to another CC it could be posted to the list. This is your list. There's no need for everyone to just be an anonymous name on the list once or twice a month. The list could be used to make a family, the CoGenWeb Family. To make friends. All here share a common interest, Colorado. The list isn't here just for the amusement of the SC and ASC. Something to think about. -- “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government lest it come to dominate our lives and interests”. - Patrick Henry - _ _... ..._ _ _._ ._ ..... ._.. ... .._

    3. There is nothing in the USGenWeb bylaws that I can find that forbids this. I also seem to remember that many years ago, we had more on the list than just cc's of the counties and of course the asc's and sc. For instance, for a long time I had people who would adopt and maintain a website just for a single town or community. At first they were invited to join this list, and later required to. I don't remember any of them actually participating on this list in any way, besides being members. This was before Gail was our SC, so I think things may of changed after that. At any rate I don't have community volunteers anymore, it was too difficult to keep everything coordinated. I really don't have an objection to her joining this list. However, I do wonder if she will get any benefit out of it. As a couple others said, it is rare than anything but checkins occur here along with the occasional business discussions.
