Please forward to all USGenWeb Project lists. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project --- Call of Grievance Committee members The one-year appointments of two Representatives to the Grievance Committee have now expired and the Grievance Committee seeks qualified and interested candidates. The first appointment would be for the slot reserved for State Coordinators or Assistant State Coordinators. The second is for the slot for Special Project members. Any Member of USGebWeb Project in good standing who qualifies under one of these categories may file as a candidate for consideration by the Grievance Committee, subject to final approval by the AB. To be eligible, you must be a member of the USGebWeb Project or any Special Project with at least one year's experience. If selected, your membership on this Committee will be for one year. The primary responsibility of the Committee is to identify, select, train and supervise mediators to settle grievance disputes. That is, the committee members will not mediate disputes themselves, but will select and manage those who do. A member should have an even disposition, an ability to listen to both sides of an argument, and a willingness to recommend solutions and instruct others. Interested parties should communicate directly to me at my e-mail address below, with their name, contact e-mail and a paragraph with their background. I will present any such candidate [more than one if we have more than one interested] to the Committee for consideration and selection. We would think this is a fast-track process and certainly want and need to have it resolved in the next few weeks or so. Sharon Craig sharcraig@sbcglobal.net
Scott... I have been using Netscape 4.8 for years...due to message filters I have. Also because is can group messages in a tree [that is I can list replies to a message with the original message, not simply by date or alpha order. I am still experimenting with Mozella Firefox [its companion Thunderbird, I believe]. But I am still looking. I am trying to see if I can import my message filters into it. I use Firefox for my browser...I like it better than IE. I used Windows 98se for years, but recently changed to Windows XP and am still learning what it can do. Thank you again, Scott. I finally figured out how to make the email Java script fill in the subject line! <SCRIPT language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript"> name = "your name"; user = "email user name"; site = "email provider"; document.write('<a href="mailto:' + user + '@' + site + '?subject=webpage comments' + '">'); document.write(name + '</a>'); </SCRIPT> To use it replace "your name" with your name inside the quotes, IE "Scott Scheibe" Replace "email user name" with your account user name, IE "dsscheibe" Replace "email provider" with your ISP, IE "earthlink.net" The subject you can change what ever is after the =and the ' IE '?subject=Cogen webpage comments' Do not modify anything else, especially anything but the text of the subject in the document.write statement. It will put a link in your page that has your name which when clicked on will open an email in the user's program with what ever you have in the subject. Of course the user must have Java script enabled or it will not work, but it is totally proof against email harvester's since they only read text and won't load the script. You can test it on the Colorado GenWeb site on any link for Sundee, Gail or me. At least I think I got them all, coding wasn't very consistent across the website.. A heads-up. When the Colorado records privacy law was revised Jan 1 2007, Colorado Department of Health - Vital Records made the decision to pull the plug on the on-line searchable Colorado marriage and divorce index due to "privacy concerns." No idea how many broken links that caused on our county pages, but I know I didn't catch my broken links to the databases until early last month and noted there are links from Kiowa. Lee

Checking in for Logan & Park Counties. I have had problems sending e-mail out [I receive it without too much problems] due to the version of Netscape I use. My server decided to add some upgraded software to filter out spam and such and My Netscape 4.8 is not able to handle the authinication that they put in. Thanks to Gail [our Assist SC} I have a way of sending e-mail out without too much problems. Sincerely, Edward A. Black, Sr. [CC, Logan, Park Counties]

I grew up on the banks of the Rock River but Black Hawk wasn't there, just his statue... ;-))) We used to visit him all the time and now when we go back to IL we still visit his statue. He was our hero in IL. Gail
I've been to the stockade a couple of times as a kid, it's maybe 10 miles from where I grew up. Once rode our bikes out there one summer with a group and another time with a friend. It says it is fenced off because it is in dangerous shape. My biggest worry when I was there was rattle snakes. It said they are working on it for it's bicentennial next year. I did a search for it and found some interesting things. I didn't know that it wasn't the original stockade but a recreation built in 1952, although I had thought it was weird it had a concrete foundation. I didn't know Pike was exploring the southern portion of the Louisiana purchase and was lost in what was then Mexican Territory, following the Rio Grand which he thought was the Red River he and his men were arrested. <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zebulon_Pike> <http://tps.cr.nps.gov/nhl/detail.cfm?ResourceId=148&ResourceType=Site> If the information on Google maps is right the recreation is about a mile south of the original site which was prone to flooding by the Rio Grande which I gathered led to the destruction of the original site. <http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=37.283751,-106.111107&spn=0.1,0.1&q=37.283751,-106.111107> Scott Scheibe dsscheibe@earthlink.net http://scottsworld.info/gene.htm Colorado State CoGen Webmaster <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/> Alamosa Co., Costilla Co., Mineral Co. & Rio Grande Co., Saguache Co., Colorado Coordinator, CoGenWeb, part of the USGenWeb Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~coalamos/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cocostil/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cominera/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~coriogra/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cosaguac/> Descendants of Capt. What facts I do have is an inquest was held my the non-military members of the escort party as the JP's in Granite refused to hear the case. It was an inquiry to determine the cause of death of the two men of which their deaths were ruled by the hands of the shooter. I do know that the shooter was held from Sep 1873 to Jan 1874 in a private home and that home owner was paid by the county for the services provided. Then in 1874 the shooter becomes a part of the Vigilantes and this is documented. Also, the home owner who was holding the shooter is also a part of the Vigilantes. So when and where did he go for his court proceedings? It looks to me like he was left behind in the care of Lake Co. I have a lot of unanswered questions and don't know how to proceed to find my answers other than I have a letter prepared to be sent to request military records for the three involved in this stint. Most of my genealogy has not had to deal with military as my family wasn't here during these times. My family became involved the earliest was WWI. I have read about what happened with the Lake Co. Wars and the history of the area but nothing to deal with the military in any way. There weren't many posts or army units in Colorado in 1873. The civil war era posts had closed. The Indian threat in eastern Colorado was pretty much ended. I can't think of any units at active posts left in Colorado besides those at Ft Garland in the San Louis Valley and Ft Lyons on the Arkansas. I answered the question about military courts in my other email. A private could have been turned over by the detail commander to be held in Granite City just to continue the mission but would have been picked up by another detail to be returned to military custody. The army of the era didn't pay well so didn't get "the best" but it was hardly manned as deplicted in PC movies. Lee ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gail Kilgore" <gail.kilgore@gmail.com> Thanks Lee and Karen, More questions, if a troop was at Fort Garland would they be called to escort a survey party in the Arkansas Valley? Would Jackson and all those photographers who photographed the area around Leadville, Dayton, Granite City have gone clear to Fort Garland to receive escort? My thoughts that Jackson and other photographers came from the Denver area but that is my thoughts. Would the escort have met the survey team and photographers at a location and then proceed into the area? I know it was the 15th that was the escort for this party. What I don't know is would they hold court martial's in the 1870's at the location of the incident or would they take the person back to the fort for court martial, if they had court martial's. What I am finding is the person who shot the two comrades was being held in Granite City from Sept 1873 until Jan 1874. Surely the 15th moved on with the escort and left this soldier behind... for the local officials to deal with?????? I then find this soldier as part of the Leadville War as one of the 180 vigilantes that was organized. And, then I find this man living nicely in an Old Soldier's Home. Did he get away with the crimes that he committed? Did he get to move on with his life and live off the government in retirement? I do not find him in any census's until 1910... nothing at all.... so from the time period of 1874 until 1910 this man married but nothing can I find on him. I think I used the term "scum" in wrong usage. I just feel that some of the men on the frontier were not the most respectable men of their time. They didn't join the service for having pride for their country and what they could do for their country but I feel that many needed a way to escape whatever was following them.
