You are right! My bad! Moving all those sites in one day, I found several errors I had to go back and fix. Right now I am trying to figure out why San Juan transferred beautifully and ony the first page is correct on Montezuma. Something to do with the ssi I expect. The navigation command is not being followed, nor the footer command, only the body. That means the pages are there if you click on the link in the Navigation panel to another page, but the navigation column itself is missing when you get to the page you clicked on. I sent an email to a friend who is more knowledgeable about ssi but haven't had an answer yet. But then she is probably moving her own sites. Vicki, >From my viewpoint. Moving Pro - We won't have a Hosted by Rootsweb banner at the top of all our county pages. You could have a simple project address like www.cogenweb.com/~phillips/ Moving Con - We (the CC) have to find a new host (without popup ads), move our current pages, and notify everyone of the address change. If we pick a host without advertising on our own we may have to pay a monthly bill ($5 and up) for the hosting service. I will leave my counties on Rootsweb for the moment but will probably move later. My own decision depends on what happens with the cogenweb.com domain. If that isn't set up or is set up with limited space and limited bandwidth for access I am looking at using Joy's offer of a directory on her theusgenweb.org domain or renting a space on a host myself. My Yuma co. pages are now at 100 mb and are still growing. Sounds like a winner to me! Then Joy could just move my 6 Colorado counties to that domain and still be on the same server. Vicki The bottom line is that what you have donated to the Colorado Archives Project won't be "taken" by anyone although the address to get to the files and tombstone photos might change to a new host. A USGenWeb Archives Project decision to move or not move hasn't been made. I don't even have a feel at this point for which way a project vote would go. My index pages will have a host banner if the Archives remains on Rootsweb but your donated text files and photographs won't. If the Archives move, my index pages and your donated information will still be in the project holdings but with a new host address and no banner. I will let everyone in the COGenWeb know when an Archives Project decision is made. JoAnne You "own" what you contributed and you as CC "control" what others contributed as long as it is on an Eagle County COGenWeb site. The host address is immaterial. Suggest those of us leaving Rootsweb leave a branded home page in place with the new address as a link instead of a simple redirect. That isn't prohibited by the "fair use" policy so it should stay up and not limit the options for a future CC as the COGenWeb had with the ~coboulder reinstatement. Lee

Gail No need to vote. Where we house our pages is a decision of the CC who owns them. When you and Sundee move the state pages provide the updated links. The rest of us will do the same when we make our decision. Karen, Thanks for the information you posted about these banners. While I would not have an issue with the Ancestry trying to get money from luring folks to their site, I do have a problem with them being able to take any data that volunteers have gathered and do with it what they want. I have my own website(www.roadsofthepast.com)and plan to keep my page there. Have you given any more thought to the Las Animas files you mentioned last month? Let me know what I need to do for you whenever you are ready. Sandi Barber Las Animas -----Original Message----- From: cogen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cogen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Karen Sent: Friday, March 07, 2008 7:23 PM To: cogen@rootsweb.com Subject: [COGEN] Ancestry banners Hi all fellow CC's, All of you are aware by now that if you have your county pages on Rootsweb, they are going to be branded by the Ancestry banner. There is nothing you can do about this, but you need to know what your options are. It may be perfectly fine with you, and if so, you don't need to read the rest of this message. If you don't agree with it, then please do read on and I will try to explain the options you have. Personally, I do not agree with this move by Ancestry for a couple of reasons. First, our National Bylaws state that we are not allowed to have a link on our "home" page for profit. But that is exactly what they are going to put there, a direct link to Ancestry. Second, the custom banner they have made for USGenWeb says "part of the Ancestry.com community". USGenWeb is not and never has been a part of Ancestry. Third, Ancestry's Use clause says they can take any and all data you have placed on your web pages and do whatever they want with it, which includes putting it behind their pay-per-view front or burn it to CD's and sell it. Therefore, what can you, as a CC do, and what are your choices? 1. You may choose to leave your pages on Rootsweb and live with the banner and their Use clause. 2. You may move your pages onto a different server. There's your choices. Simply put, their way or the highway. And if that's okay with you, no one in this organization can fault you for it. Now, what do you do if you choose option #2? First you look for a different server. You type in "web hosting" into google or what ever search engine you use. You will find a listing for Top Ten Web Hosts. http://www.top10hostinglist.com/?gclid=CInp_t-T_JECFQXwlgodwET8xQ You may choose from that list, OR you can type in "Free web hosting" and see what comes up. I found this site: http://www.free-webhosts.com/ I didn't go through the site to see what is there, but this will give you some leads to look into. Keep in mind that any free web host may have more banners and stuff that you don't want. That's the price of "Free". So before signing up, make sure you know what you are getting. If you look at startlogic on the first list, you will see that it only costs $4.95 per month, and it's on your own domain, one that you name, such as mine is kmitch.com They offer free set-up, 1500 GB of space, 15,000GB bandwidth, free domain name, and lots of other goodies. This is just an example of what to look for. The one problem with startlogic, which I didn't consider a problem, was that they don't offer free transfers, which means they won't move your whole site for you. You have to do that yourself. If that sounds daunting, believe me, it isn't. They will walk you through the set-up and then you just FTP your files up, just like you're doing right now on Rootsweb. I am not advocating any one server over another, I'm merely giving one example of what's out there that you can look at. Now if you're serious about moving your pages but don't want to go it alone, you may want to team up with another CC and split the cost. As I said in an earlier email, it costs less to have your own domain than most people spend on cokes for a month, and you have full assurance that no one is going to brand your site or abscond with your data to make a profit on it. I hope I've helped in answering some questions you may have about all of this, but if anything at all is not clear, please do let me know and I will try my best to answer. Again, I stress to you, the choice is yours, and whatever you decide is fine, I just want you to know what your options are. You all have a great day! Gail and everybody, As I announced earlier I will be moving my 6 counties to Joy's server that she offered to all cc's last fall. I have already moved 3 of them (Routt, Montezuma and San Juan) and will move the other 3 as soon as Sundee resends me the passwords for Jackson, Grant and LaPlata as I lost them in a hard drive failure last month. I also moved all 6 of my Louisiana Parishes and 2 of my Mississippi Counties to www.theusgenweb.org. I moved my freepages accounts and the 3 MS domains I own last year. I appreciate what Rootsweb has done for us in the past, but we are losing ground with them every year. I think we should just say thanks but no thanks and establish once and for all that we are a separate, free genealogical source, beholden to no one but our contributors and ourselves. My concern now is for the Archives. As Mississippi Archives director, I am very concerned about what the Rootsweb banner will do to my HTML pages. They have frames/ and ssi. Will I end up with a page that is almost unreadable?
