    3. Gail, I certainly agree about backing up our sites. I am in the process of doing that as we speak. Once I find web space for my county pages, including Adams County, I will be moving them. I will certainly let you know when Adams is moved. I think because of my involvement in the USGenWeb Archives, I am concerned that things move smoothly. Moving the state pages will be a piece of cake compared to the whole Archives moving as it is all in one place. All I am asking is that things be done in an orderly fashion, one thing at a time. I in no way mean to criticize but to help. Panic is not what we need but a calm, orderly exodus from rootsweb. I think, since I wrote the original comments, you have a good handle on things and are doing just fine for which I thank you very much. Anything I can do to help, I am here. The only pages that will be moved is the state pages, and any counties that wish to follow. We have no say over where the counties are located like some states do. 3. I get the real sense of panic here. There is nothing to panic about. Even with the banners, we can and should slow down. We don't want to do anything that is not thought out completely. All you need to do, Gail and Sundee, is move the state pages. Remember that the county pages are the responsibility of the county coordinators. It is up the county coordinator to do what is right for their county. As you stated, counties do not have to move to your site and do not have to do it today, tomorrow or this coming weekend. If we go slowly, doing one thing at a time, then it will be a smooth transition. As Lee stated, it is up to the State Coordinators to decide what to do with the State pages. Don't rush to do anything until you are comfortable with the outcome. The sky is not falling and we can do this in a logical, orderly manner. Please try it, and hope they don't catch it right away. I had thought about leaving the index.htm page with the links on the new site but I guess if I am going to make the break, do it clean. 3. Ok, thanks... I did secure the domain cogenweb.com and now have to figure the rest out. If all goes the way I hope it does we will be http://cogenweb.com and then our counties will be http://cogenweb.com/lake etc. But again, each CC has their choice if they want to move, stay or whatever. I know IL is moving everybody, no questions asked. Each county is going with the state pages. IA already has their own server so those on RW there are moving to the IA server. A lot of the states have already moved including AZ. I have paid for the server and I have paid for the domain name. Maybe down the rode a piece we can set up an account for paying for the server and domain registration. The server was $96.00 and the domain name for two years was $20.38 and the domain registers name is not private so anyone can see who owns the domain. I just want us to be prepared. Sundee will be given the information and I will also give it to my son, Mike, who I have asked to stay on top of my things if I should die. Scott, as webmaster, will have access to everything too. I don't know how you pass on a domain name if you die but I guess Mike can figure it out. I will be the first to admit that I am afraid of what the outcome of all this is going to be. Everybody scrambling in different directions and will we be able to pull the whole project back together without mail lists, boards and the archives of the mail lists. I think it is also time to get a google mail list set up for us as we have no idea when TGN/RW will pull the plug on us after this massive exodus this weekend. We were not able to give RW a heads up about what the membership reaction to the banners would be and it was not favorable. I pray that this isn't a sad day for the USGenWeb. 3. When you replying to a message please don't quote back the whole message, I get the digest and am getting several digests a day of mostly quotes of previous messages. I have no problem with moving the state site where ever. I like the idea of our own domain cogenweb.com. Personally I will wait until some decisions are made, the last thing we should do is get in a hurry to move out from under rootsweb/ancestry and cause other problems. It depends a lot on hosting and so forth. I have no idea how to make a domain with sub domains with pass word FTP access for every separate domain. Most of us have something like this now. http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/ With FTP access to our sites with pass word protection. I have no idea how that is set up. These are the same site except the first one is set up as a sub domain of scottsworld.info, the second is the directory it is in. (it didn't occur to me it could be accessed both ways until today.) It is part of scottsworld.info and I access the whole site with the same address and password. I set up the sub domain with the hosting controls on godaddy. I don't think this is some thing we would want with the 60 plus county sites of CoGen Web on any server, where everyone that has access has access to the whole site. Sure some of you have space for more sites but do you want others to have access to your whole site? http://woodward.scottsworld.info/ same as except above is set up as a sub domain of scottsworld http://scottsworld.info/woodward/ http://scottsworld.info/ That is exactly what http://theusgenweb.org/ Is doing. http://theusgenweb.org/co/ http://theusgenweb.org/co/routt/ Each is a sub directory of http://theusgenweb.org/ and you can go up the chain of directory and since there is no index.html file in the directory of /co/ you can see the contents of the directory. Also while updating links on cogen it occurred to me we need to do something with the counties that are up for adoption. IF we can get our own domain and set up password protected sites for each county I would like to do that. cogenweb.com would be nice But basic hosting and something that complex are not something I see happening. Are you sure cogenweb.com is owned by someone? I searched godaddy and it says it is available. cogenweb.org how ever is parked Domain ID:D143327551-LROR Domain Name:COGENWEB.ORG Created On:10-Apr-2007 09:00:39 UTC Last Updated On:10-Jun-2007 04:02:23 UTC Expiration Date:10-Apr-2008 09:00:39 UTC Sponsoring Registrar:Moniker Online Services Inc. 1. [COGEN] Robots
    2. Scott Scheibe
    3. The links at the bottom will explain more in detail than I can, but robots text will only work in the root directory of your own domain so it will not work if you have your site hosted on rootsweb. Say your address is something like: http://www.rootsweb.com/~coalamos/ The root would be the www.rootsweb.com and their robots.txt file controls the whole domain of rootsweb.com. Basically the first line says all user-agents or indexing spiders are allowed to explore your site except for the directories that are disallowed. User-Agent MyFamilyBot is Ancestry's and the file is telling it they are disallowed from searching / the whole website. The sitemap statement is a new thing which you may not find information on it and Google is the only one that supports it that I know of now. It tells Google where to find your sitemap.xml which is an index of every page of your site so it can easier index a large site. It probably does not make much difference on small sites but can't hurt either. I was reading the search tools site and mine is wrong, the disallow myFamilyBot should come first because it would read the * and then proceed other wise. And there should be a space between the next statement. User-Agent: MyFamilyBot Disallow: / User-Agent: * Sitemap: http://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml Disallow: /cgi-local/ Disallow: /stats/ Disallow: /photos/ Disallow: /images/ http://www.searchtools.com/robots/robots-txt.html http://www.robotstxt.org/faq.html http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ Will produce site maps, go to the page, put in your url, change the frequency to monthly from daily. Ignore the other settings and click start. It will take a few minutes to scan your site, then the next page will have links to download the site maps. I use the .xml, .ror, .txt, and .html. The url.txt is for yahoo's spider. Download un-compressed XML Sitemap Download ROR Sitemap Download HTML Sitemap Download Sitemap in Text Format There is a link to sign up for a Google webmasters tools and to submit your sitemap.xml page to them. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview Personally I like Gsitecrawler over sitemaps.com for producing .xml and .txt files but it is more complicated to use and requires some set up. http://gsitecrawler.com/ You'll then want to put something like this at the bottom of at least your index.html page. I put it at the bottom of every page below the copyright and last updated information. You of course would want to change "Scott's World" to something like "Weld County CoGenWeb" <!-- SITEMAP BEGIN --> <a href="sitemap.html" title="HTML Scott's World Sitemap" >Sitemap</a> &nbsp; <a href="sitemap.xml" title="XML Scott's World Sitemap" target="_top">sitemap.xml</a> <br> <a href="ror.xml" title="ROR Scott's World Sitemap" target="_top">ROR Sitemap</a> &nbsp; <a href="urllist.txt" title="Scott's World URL List" target="_top">urllist.txt</a> </div> <!-- SITEMAP END --> This is what title does, say your link is <a href="index.html">Home</a> doesn't tell you much and if you are limited on space for the link not much you can do with it. Put the title in the coding and when someone hovers over the link it will pop up a box that says what is in the title statement if they have a recent browser. <a href="index.html" title="Colorado GenWeb main page">home</a> Scott Scheibe dsscheibe@earthlink.net http://scottsworld.info/gene.htm Colorado State CoGen Webmaster <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/> Alamosa Co., Costilla Co., Mineral Co. & Rio Grande Co., Saguache Co., Colorado Coordinator, CoGenWeb, part of the USGenWeb Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~coalamos/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cocostil/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cominera/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~coriogra/> <http://www.rootsweb.com/~cosaguac/> Descendants of Capt. 3. Scott, This is something that I have known I should do, but haven't taken the time to learn. Can you go into a little more detail about what a robot.txt file is and how it works? Also, in your example you use: "MyFamilyBot." Is that the name of the website (hollyhockfarms.com/coboulder) or something else? Thanks for the help!
