    1. [COGEN] Fw: Announcement: USGenWeb Project sites hosted on TGN/RW ("RootsWeb")

Vickery Sent: Tuesday, March 11, 2008 2:58 PM Subject: RE: Announcement: USGenWeb Project sites hosted on TGN/RW ("RootsWeb") You wrote: Acestry is a for profit site and USGenWeb was created as free information. I have hosted Eagle County, CO for 11 years and have put a lot of time and effort into the information on these pages. They get my information for free and then turn around and charge others for it? Unbelievable!!! JoAnn Potter Riggle Your message was forwarded to me, JoAnn, as a member of the AB representing the CCs in NWPL, and I want to reassure you that one way or another your work and ours will remain available at no cost. Almost every site on the web has ads or banners put there by the host, e.g., Yahoo or Google. Even the USGenWeb logos and individual state logos are a kind of ad or banner. RootsWeb has always encouraged (but not required) us to put its logo on our pages. I've done that on my IAGenWeb Marion County site, for example: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iamarion/ (scroll to the bottom). What's happening now with the banners is very much like that. In marketing lingo it's called "branding," and it's a hot idea among marketers right now. The problem is that Ancestry, which is now owned by The Generation Network (TGN), is, as you observe, a for profit site, and RootsWeb and USGenWeb are committed to free information for everyone. This isn't necessarily a problem, actually, but a lot of people are afraid that it will be. They're afraid that down the road we'll lose control of what we've done, and it'll be taken over and charged for by TGN or some other for profit corporation. So what is the real risk? Everyone finally has to decide that for herself, but I can tell you that the Advisory Board is trying to negotiate with TGN and RootsWeb to make sure that our identity and our data remain safe and free. We don't believe the banners are a threat in and of themselves as long as our identity is safe and our data remains freely available. But if that doesn't reassure you... I can also tell you that as the host of a USGenWeb county, you have the right to put your county on any server that you want. In other words, you don't have to stay on rootsweb.com. You can move your site to the server of your choice at any time. Some servers are free, some cost money. You'll find a list of both kinds on Cyndie's List at http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm#Find, among other places. In some cases, USGenWeb states may decide to move the state pages to a different server and offer space there to some or all of their counties. Iowa already has its own server (iagenweb.org) and about 1/3 of the counties have moved to it over the past two or three years. I understand four more just did because of their concerns about the banners. My personal opinion is that you can safely wait to see what the banners actually look at and how our negotiations wuth TGN/RW turn out. In the mean time you can investigate other servers and raise questions on your state mail list and elsewhere, so that you can make the right choice for you. Please feel free to email me or any of the other members of the Advisory Board if you have more questions and concerns. 3. Gail One more decision for you and Sundee to think about. What happens to the "unadopted" county pages the COGenWeb owns at the moment? Move them to cogenweb.com? Leave them on Rootsweb? I would advise you to move them. (Include Morgan County in the decision.) Lee

    3. Hopefully we will have the passwords and can move those sites. I have no clue where Sundee is these days. If anyone knows her where abouts please let me know. We had talked about moving Colorado when we moved Arizona so this will not be a shock to her, in fact, she offered to help pay for the server. Sundee hasn't posted to the mail list since around the 6th of February. 3. We are at our new home. http://cogenweb.com and I understand there are a couple of glitches but they are being worked on. Please direct your sites to the new URL. I will be moving Lake and Chaffee as soon as Chaffee is set up. The URL's for those counties will be http://cogenweb.com/lake and http://cogenweb.com/chaffee The mail list is coming along too. Annie is helping to get all the coordinators moved to the new list. Looks like Colorado's move is almost complete. Thanks to all that are helping to make this happen. Gail

I printed off the addresses off the RW mail account and have been using them to add to the Google site. I am not sure who is who with some of these email addresses. They may even be long lost CC's. 3. I am sorry everyone, I will get these transferred as Google lets me add new addies. When I get them transferred I will try it out and do a roll call. I am not happy about this either but I guess Google is worried I am setting up a spam list and so they have to approve the purpose of the list. Yes, Jackie... there is concern that TGN/RW might, and I say might, shut us down so we are just getting prepared for the worse scenario. With your FTP program just download the public_html folder and it's contents from the ~cogenweb site on the rootsweb server, then upload that folder's contents (not the folder its self) to your domain on your new server.
