    2. Scott Scheibe
    3. Ok, I've fiddled around all night and think I have the hosting controls figured out. I can set you up either as a sub domain county.cogenweb.com or a sub directory cogenweb.com/county/ I need to know which you want and what user name you want. A sub domain goes in the public_html directory and a sub directory goes under the /cogenweb/ directory so the FTP access is different for them. The sub domain is more secure as it can only be accessed by the FTP for that account and I believe is more search engine friendly. It is a little more work for me to set up as a sub domain is a bit more complicated than creating an new directory. The only difference in the FTP setup is one is /cogenweb/county/ and the other is public_html/county/ I can access any directory under the /cogenweb/ but don't really want to. Its like our work email accounts I know the password structure they use so I could log into any of Vikings store's webmail and other accounts if I wanted, but I don't even have time to read all my own mail so why would I look at someone elses.. It may take me some time to set every one up and do the URL changes on cogenweb site, after all there are over 60 counties plus special projects if everyone wants to move. There's only one of me and I have to work and sleep some time.. I didn't plan on this at all when I agreed to be webmaster for the website.. 3. Scott, I think we should download copies of all of the adoptees and make sites on the new server. As for Mary Ann's two projects, we could do a back up but not actually place them on her server without her permission. I know at one time, the old accounts team at Rootsweb would have considered those two projects long abandoned, but the accounts department is down to just a couple of folks now. That's why it takes so long to get an answer from them AnnieG E-mail message checked by Spyware Doctor (5.5.0.204) Database version: 5.09410 http://www.pctools.com/en/spyware-doctor/

    3. Folks, I need to tell you that it is almost imperative that these sites get moved as soon as yesterday. We are not even sure that RW will honor the sites that try and stay on their server. They are after our information. We were a great asset to them and their Ancestry project and could claim copyright as the information is on their server. I am going in and deleting my sites on RW right now and if anyone else needs a password for their sites, I was able to gather some more today. I am not even going to put a redirect on the site as the big search engines will pick us up in about a 24 hours period. If you want to join the server along with the state pages please let us know so we can get the accounts set up. Please don't procrastinate on this move. Gail

    3. I think I have fixed the problems with the SSI on the new site. If you find any problems let me know what it is and where. I'm sending this to both lists since I'm not sure everyone is on the new Google groups list yet. When changing your links I'd like you to use something like these; <a href="http://cogenweb.com/" title="Colorado GenWeb Project, part of USGenWeb">COGenWeb Project</a> You don't have to use the exact text, in fact if it varies a little from site to site it would be better for search engine ranking. You can use http://cogenweb.com/index.htm if you want. The title="this is a URL title" will show if you hover over a link with a title in it. Don't forget your links that are around your images also. There are a few of you that still have links to the old site at rootsweb pointing at the comain.htm which is obsolete and is not on the new site at all. If you have a link to the interactive state map I have changed it's location in the site and the new url is: http://cogenweb.com/comap.htm I was tired of having to remember to change it when it was the only htm file in the /map/ directory so it's in the root directory with the other files now. Goldmine and CCinfo, are still in the same relative directories. USGenWeb <a href="http://www.usgenweb.org/" title="The US GenWeb Project, Free Genealogy and Family History Online" title="USGenWeb Project" target="_blank"> I need to be kept up to date on any url changes so I can keep the state site up to date. I have not redirected the old state page but all the links will send you to the new site. comain.htm instead of redirecting you to the index.htm page now sends visitors to the new site. There is an index.html page which will tell anyone who just goes to http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/ the site has moved, please update your links, this is the new URL. 1. [COGEN] Fwd: [STATE-COORD] Rootsweb Announcement.
    2. Gail Kilgore
    3. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tina S. Vickery <tsvickery@gmail.com> Date: Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 3:23 PM Subject: [STATE-COORD] Rootsweb Announcement. To: state-coord@rootsweb.com, usgenweb-all@rootsweb.com, usgenweb-discuss@rootsweb.com, board@rootsweb.com Please forward to all Project lists. Tina Vickery National Coordinator USGenWeb Project ____ RootsWeb Announcement As you know, The Generations Network has hosted and funded the RootsWeb online community since June 2000, thereby maintaining RootsWeb as the world's oldest and largest free genealogy website. TGN remains committed to this mission and believes that RootsWeb is an absolutely invaluable and complementary resource to Ancestry.com, our flagship commercial family history site. We believe in both services and want to see both communities prosper and grow. As part of this goal, we have decided to "transplant" RootsWeb onto the Ancestry.com domain beginning next week. This move will not change the RootsWeb experience or alter the ease of navigation to or within RootsWeb. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience. What will be different is that the Web address for all RootsWeb pages will change from www.rootsweb.com to www.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Again, the RootsWeb experience is not changing. The decision to host RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is being made for one primary reason: we believe that the users of each of our two main websites can be better served if they have access to the best services available on both. Simply stated, we want to introduce more Ancestry.com users to RootsWeb and vice versa. Today, despite the fact that Ancestry.com and RootsWeb.com are the two most frequently visited family history sites on the Web, only 25 percent of visitors to Ancestry.com visited RootsWeb in January 2008, while only 20 percent of visitors to RootsWeb visited Ancestry.com (according to Comscore Media Metrix). We think we will serve our users best by doing a better job of letting them know what is available on both Ancestry.com and RootsWeb. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com is the first step towards making this happen, but we will absolutely look for more and better ways down the road to advance this goal. Hosting RootsWeb on Ancestry.com will also make it easier for us to make changes and improvements to the RootsWeb experience in the future. All old RootsWeb URLs will continue to work, whether they are bookmarks or favorites, links to or from a hosted page or URLs manually typed in your Internet browser. We will have a redirect in place so that all old URLs will automatically end up on the appropriate new RootsWeb URL. You will never need to update your old favorites or links unless you want to. We have worked to make the transition as seamless as possible for our users, and this change should have a minimal impact on your experience with the site. RootsWeb will remain a free online experience dedicated to providing you with a place where our community can find their roots together. If you have questions regarding this change please email them to feedback@rootsweb.com. Thanks, Tim Sullivan CEO The Generations Network, Inc. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to STATE-COORD-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
