Peck in this passage from "History of Colorado" by William N. Byers: Canon City was the point of first settlement in Fremont County in 1859...The first phase of the march was made at the site of Canon City, Fremont County, in October 1859, by a party of six men, who had been among the first on the site of Pueblo for permanent settlement. These men were Josiah F. Smith, Stephen Smith, William H. Young, Robert Bereaw, CHARLES D. PECK, and William Kroenig. They built a log house which was occupied by Robert Middleton and family the ensuring year. Mrs. Middleton being the first white woman to come to Canon City..." Thanks.
