Hello everyone, I am new to this list, having just today found a connection to Fremont county. I have a puzzle that I hope can be solved. Here it goes: My great great great grandfather John Haighton Noyes moved to Canada from England in the mid 1850's. He married and had four children. Apparently they split and he moved to the states. The only notation I have relating to his death is from the Gloucestershire Record Office in England the notation reads: NOYES, John Haighton. Of Canyon's City, South Carolina, USA. Died 14th November 1870 at 39, Mile Ranch, near Canyon City. Admin granted to etc. At first I looked in South Carolina for a Canyon's City and found no such thing. I had been at a loss for a while now until I realized it was 39 Mile ranch rather than he died at age 39. I googled it and sure enough 39-Mile Ranch came up three times and it was apparently a ranch outside of Canon City in Fremont County, Colorado. What I would dream of finding is his gravestone, but I don't know if this is possible. What is possible perhaps is that there is a death record for him in Fremont County. Again, he died on November 14th, 1870. He was born in 1832, so he would be around 38-39. Is it possible for anyone to find his death record? Perhaps even there is mention of his death in a local newspaper. And has anyone here ever heard of 39-Mile Ranch? I would appreciate any help anyone can give. This is very important to me, and I would be ever grateful to one who could shed light on my puzzle. Thanks and Best Regards, Cameron Bryant
Hi Cameron, There is a mountain west of CANON CITY, CO called 39 as it is 39 miles from Colorado Springs (or so I've been told). I understood that one of the ranches in the area was called 39 mile ranch. This area being west of Canon City is closer to the town of Lake George than Canon City. Also the town of Florissant is only a few miles south of there. Most folks in them days received their mail with a Florissant, CO address (or at least my grandfather did). (He homesteaded near Lake George). By the way, most of this area is in Park County. The County headquarters are in Fairplay. The cemeteries in this area would be located in Fairplay, Lake George, Florissant, Cripple Creek, Victor, Guffey, and of course Canon City. Sorry, I cannot help with a death record (if there even was one). Quite often the only record in those days was a note in one of the local newspapers if that.
