Another good reference for those odd questions out there, although not sure how many P & Z offices will do research for folks. Glad to be able to help a smidge, Jo

I hadn't thought about using the library for goodies. Thanks! I checked in with my buddy at the local Planning & Zoning office regarding the Fremont Mine. We found it on an old map. Here is the info, although not sure it is of any use to you other than knowing it really existed. The map was by the US Geological Society and the Colorado Dept of Natural Resources. It is titled "Inactive Mine Reclamation Program", the "Canon City Quadrangle" and is Drawing #8007-13. With geology by: R.E. Marburg and A.R. Myers. Drafting by: H.A.H. Schlender. Dated: Jan 31, 1981. The Fremont Mine was a coal mine, and just next to it is the New Fremont Mine. Both are located just west of the little town of Williamsburg. I am able to request a copy of the mine site (sort of a topographical version) if interested. As I said, not sure what all this will do for you other than confirm it's location. Let me know if you need a copy, and since I do not have a scanner, I would need to mail it to you. You can send your address directly to my email if interested. Jo

If that doesn't work, try this link http://www.qpublic.net/fremont/ and do a search on Ellison. Not sure if any of this helps, but there is a PO Box listed for Wilhelmina. Jo

Perhaps, being a lifelong resident, you are familiar with some of Canon City's history. I would like to know whether there was a telegraph office in Canon City in 1908. A relative died on a train passing through Canon City, and I'm wondering how word would have been sent to his family in Stillwater, Oklahoma, some 600 plus miles away. See my posting, subject "ARCH IS DEAD."

Jones. He was superintendent of the Fremont Mine in Fremont County and died in an accident there on June 5, 1904. In 1900 he lived in the town of Williamsburgh, Fremont County with his wife Annie E. In particular, I am wondering how to get an obituary and a possible story on the accident that might have appeared in a "local" paper. Thank you for any suggestions. Nancy McGaw Wyoming

Fourty-seven years ago, I stood on the Royal Gorge Bridge, looking down at what appeared to me to be a toy train. Though it has become a faded memory, it was an awesome experience. Was it a tram by which we descended to the bottom of the canyon? I don't remember. The bridge will never be forgotten, but I have no memory of Canon City. As we know, the spelling of words do often change with time. Historical writings I've read on the Internet do substitute an "i" for a "y" in the word "Canyon" or "Canon." I was not aware of that when I posted my message. Thank you again for taking the time to respond. I plan to read more about Canon City; it sounds like an interesting place-- perhaps a good place to retire. Gary
