I live up copper gulch area, about 17 miles North of Westcliffe, and about 24 miles southwest of Canon City, or about 14 miles south of highway 50 near Cotopaxi. I am from Grand Junction, and decided to retire here in Fremont Co. I have not retired yet but soon. Yes, Florence and Canon City have really changed. We got a Home Depot, 2 new places to eat, and 4 movie houses. It is growing like a weed. When was the last time you were here? I really don't know too many people because I live out to far. The place is still as beautfiul as ever. I love it down here. Where are you from, and are you retired? Send me a note when you can. Your friend Doug

I grad. from cchs in 1948 and moved to oregon. I had quite a few friends there at that time but probably most are gone now. I would have liked to come for class reunion but not enough left to be interested i guess. My old girlfriend s name was Mildred Mann. I guess she had 7 kids. She married a Jim or Fred MYERS. I think they live in Florence. Florence used to be almost a ghost town like cripple creek. I guess thats all changed. My mom and dad had a fruit ranch behind the belvedare 0n 9th st. in lincoln park. y grandparents had their place off of 9th st. on elm in lincoln park. Well Doud if you get this hoping you get time to answer and keep me up on the news back there. Sincerly Gene HIATT

Yes im sure things are alot different there now. It used to be a 5.00 fine for walking down main st. with a lunch pail. Canon was a retire ies paradise. Mostly fruit ranches etc. Bud Chess s parents had a cattle ranch along with a few others. Bud Berry s dad had the only new car dealership in town. David FRY s dad owned the only jewelry store in town. One cab in town.(cottons).Bob and Windy Witchmans dad owned fawn hollow tavern. Cripple Creek was a ghost town as was Florence. The only thing in florence was a cat house. Sorry about that but true story. I dont know if the old Renfro place still stands or not. It was a big neat old building on 9th st. just before elm st. Di Nardies used to have a store on 9 th st. to. The royal george was free then to. My old girlfriend lived on college st right below the pen and skyline rd. Her dad used to sleep with a loaded shotgun by his bed all the time. They had a prison break there in 1947. Warden Best w! as the warden at that time. He was so drunk that night they had to help him to the prison.Really cold that night and they almost froze. Anyway June appreciate the reply and just a little news. Sincerly Gene Hiatt

Surnames: HASKINS, DAVENPORT Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lY.2ADE/759 Message Board Post: Hello Fellow Fremont Posters! First some background: My G>Grandfather, Charles F. HASKINS, was an engineer on the D&RGRR in the mid 1880's. During his tenure, he and his fireman, Dave DAVENPORT, were involved in the famous wreck of '85. What?! Youv'e never heard of this accident that brought about the end of narrow gauge lines in the Rockys, and ended up causing the company to reform as the D&RGW??? No suprise. The company took great pains to make this situation "go away". The gist of the story follows: On May 9th, 1885, sometime after 3:40 P.M., while hauling a mixed load (ore and passengers) along a narrow gauge line of the Grape Creek Extension(Silver Creek Branch towards Westcliff), the trestle gave way in front and in an effort to save the passengers, which he did, he rode the engine (train # 49)(Locomotive 74 drawing train 71) over the downed trestle and plummeted 104 feet into the ravine. I have been researching this accident for the better part of 30 years but have had trouble finding related documentation. My Query: Does anyone have any info on this accident and, particularly, PHOTOS or newspaper articles, or documents pertaining to this accident or the Grape Creek Extention? I would like info on Mr. Dave Davenport as well but have not had much luck. Both men lived in Canon City at the time. Please! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks soooooooooo much in advance, Carl

    3. Hi Cameron, There is a mountain west of CANON CITY, CO called 39 as it is 39 miles from Colorado Springs (or so I've been told). I understood that one of the ranches in the area was called 39 mile ranch. This area being west of Canon City is closer to the town of Lake George than Canon City. Also the town of Florissant is only a few miles south of there. Most folks in them days received their mail with a Florissant, CO address (or at least my grandfather did). (He homesteaded near Lake George). By the way, most of this area is in Park County. The County headquarters are in Fairplay. The cemeteries in this area would be located in Fairplay, Lake George, Florissant, Cripple Creek, Victor, Guffey, and of course Canon City. Sorry, I cannot help with a death record (if there even was one). Quite often the only record in those days was a note in one of the local newspapers if that. Here it goes: My great great great grandfather John Haighton Noyes moved to Canada from England in the mid 1850's. He married and had four children. Apparently they split and he moved to the states. The only notation I have relating to his death is from the Gloucestershire Record Office in England the notation reads: NOYES, John Haighton. Of Canyon's City, South Carolina, USA. Died 14th November 1870 at 39, Mile Ranch, near Canyon City. Admin granted to etc. At first I looked in South Carolina for a Canyon's City and found no such thing. I had been at a loss for a while now until I realized it was 39 Mile ranch rather than he died at age 39. I googled it and sure enough 39-Mile Ranch came up three times and it was apparently a ranch outside of Canon City in Fremont County, Colorado. What I would dream of finding is his gravestone, but I don't know if this is possible. What is possible perhaps is that there is a death record for him in Fremont County. Again, he died on November 14th, 1870. He was born in 1832, so he would be around 38-39. Is it possible for anyone to find his death record?
