    3. E. Whetsel, The John Coe of whom you inquired was born June 15, 1649, in Gloucester, MA, son of Matthew and Elizabeth (Wakley) Coe. Matthew Coe, as you are most likely aware, was an English immigrant to Portsmouth, NH, in 1640. John Coe went to Falmouth, ME, with his parents in 1661, and after the town was destroyed by Indians during King Philip's War in 1676, he located at Duxbury, MA. A surveyor and settler of boundries for the Plymouth Colony, he came down the Seconnet River to Little Compton, RI, about the time the town was settled. Upon arriving there he went to the home of William Pabodie, where he remained "until his work was done." Pabodie had married Elizabeth Alden, daughter of Plymouth Pilgrims John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of Mayflower fame and heroine of Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish." A large granite monument stands to the honor of Elizabeth Pabodie in Little Compton, the north side of which is inscribed with these words: "Elizabeth Pabodie, daughter of Plymouth Pilgrims, John Alden and Elizabeth Mullins. The first white woman born in New England" John Coe became acquainted with the Pabodie's daughter Sarah, born Aug. 7, 1656, died Aug. 27, 1740. He married her Nov. 10, 1681, at Duxbury, MA. They returned to Little Compton, RI, where John died Dec. 16, 1728. Their children were: 1. Lydia, b. Feb. 26, 1682; d. young. 2. Sarah, b. Feb. 25, 1685; d. young. 3. Lydia, b. 1688. 4. Sarah, b. 1690. 5. Samuel, b. Dec. 12, 1692. 6. Elizabeth, b. March 28, 1694. 7. Hannah, b. Dec. 29, 1696. 8. John, b. Feb. 1, 1699. 9. Joseph, b. March 24, 1700. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe
