John, Richard Elrich Coe, who was born February 2, 1907, in Lycoming, NY, was very active in Coe genealogy. A successful advertising executive in New York, Arizona and California, he served as a field director with the American Red Cross during WW II. Subsequent to joining the Sons of the Revolution in 1965, he held a number of positions with the organization, including State Secretary and Genealogist (1965-1987), Library Director of the Sons of the Revolution Library (1979-1987), General Vice President of the Genealogical Society of the Sons of the Revolution (1970-1979), and Editor of the "Flintlock & Powderhorn," the national publication of the Sons of the Revolution (1975-1985). In 1986 he was elected Honorary President for Life of the state society for his many years of service and dedication to the organization. He also was active in other organizations. He was California State Governor of the Society of Colonial Wars (1976-1977), Governor of the Order of the Founders & Patriots of America (1977-1979), Los Angeles Colony Governor (1972-1979) and State Deputy Governor (1977-1980) of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and Herald of the National Genealogical Society (1970-1987). Richard was a descendant of John Coe, who was born in 1588 in Suffolk, England, and who immigrated to Stamford, CT, about 1640, son of Henry and Mary (Vincent) Coe. For years he worked on a comprehensive history of the descendants of John Coe of Stamford, CT, and Rye, NY. Very sadly his work was cut short by his untimely death, January 17, 1987, in Glendale, CA. He was my friend and he is sorely missed. If you have interest in his work, his papers were filed with John R. Justice, State President, Sons of the Revolution, P.O. Box 1749, Beverly Hills, CA 90213 (213) 837-6032. In receipt of some of his papers is Todd Wellington Coe, President, Coe Family Society, 1214 North Pontiac Trail, Walled Lake, MI 48088. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe carlrcoe@compuserve.com
