Date: 10/31/98 2:03 PM RE: COE, William A. b. 1844 in AL USA Sheran, Yes, I do have the 1870 Texas census. There are no William or William A. Coes listed. There are two listed in 1880, your William A. Coe of Henderson County and William Alexander Coe of Collin County, who was born Jan. 24, 1843, in Jackson County, TN, son of Andrew Jackson and Rhoda (Martin) Coe. William A. Coe and Abner Coe are the only two Coes listed in the 1890 Texas Civil War veterans census. Abner Coe served with Company A, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, Union Army, during the war and later settled in Grayson County, TX. I believe your William Coe was still in Alabama in 1870. The William A. Coe of Henry County, AL, was there in 1869 involved in litigation over his father's estate. I believe he is the William Coe listed on page 245, dwelling 59, family 60, of the 1870 census of Dale County, AL. He was single and working as a farmhand for J.W. Culverhouse. In looking over my notes, I found a reference I had made beside William A. Coe in the 1850 census of Henry County, AL. Of course he was only six years old at the time, but in the right column I had written Company A, 6th Regiment. I made those notes many years ago. I cannot now recall to what I was referring. As I mentioned, two of his brothers served in Company A, 6th Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, Confederate Army. William A. Coe served in the Alabama Artillery--cannoners. They loaded, fired, hauled, etc, the cannons involved in the war. William's job was as a hostler (he took care of the horses). The "H.A." you saw would have been someone who served in the Heavy Artillery--big guns. Interestingly, descendants of William A. Coe's brothers Henry Isaac Coe, who moved to Hardin County, TX, and Thomas Smittson Coe, who moved to Geneva County, AL (on the Florida line), also claim that they lost land to which they were entitled. They claim that the oldest brother James Alexander Coe somehow maneuvered during settlement of their father's estate to cheat the others out of the family land. In fact, James Alexander Coe did file suit against his siblings in Henry County, AL. Although their father died in 1859, the estate was not settled until August 18, 1869. Each child received $8.75. James Alexander Coe, who was administrator of the estate, received the 320-acre family farm, but paid $505 for it. During litigation in July 1869 William A. Coe's residence was listed as Columbia, AL. His father, Andrew Jackson Coe, was postmaster there in 1855, 1856, and 1857. I'll wait until I receive the 1890 veterans records before doing more. I have a form partially completed for requesting records from the National Archives. Once I look over what you've sent, I'll send it off. Unfortunately, it takes a couple of months to hear back from them. Carl Robert Coe
