Carl: I just returned from Florida today and am delighted to see that you are still in there swinging on the Stephen Coe issue. Hang in there -- we will convince them all eventually! I can say of a certainty that there was no one by the name of Robert Coe south of the Mason Dixon prior to 1830. And those who have now added Stephen as his middle name completely confound me. There was no Robert or Robert Stephen Coe. Elizabeth Coe married May 27, 1829, in McMinn County, TN, Moses Casey, son of Ambler and Polly (Ellison) Casey. At that time living in McMinn County was a Stephen Coe who lived on public assistance. On June 5, 1826, the court of McMinn County appropriated $40 for his maintenance. Stephen Coe previously lived as a pauper in Roane County, where the Roane County court would annually set aside $20 for his care. I challenge anyone to provide a document with a Robert Coe living in the South prior to 1830 listed on it. You will not be able to do so. On the other hand, I have meticulously leafed through public records in both Roane and McMinn Counties and can tell you that Stephen Coe was indeed a real person. The date of Stephen Coe's birth is approxiamately 1775. It is verified that he was born in South Carolina by information provided to the census taker in 1880 when son Wesley Allen Coe gave that state as the place of birth of both his mother and father. Interestingly, Wesley married Rebecca Ellison, who it may be found was of the same family as Ambler Casey's wife. Information must be verified with fact. Carl Robert Coe >>
