Recently while researching my wife's side of the tree I ran across an old work sheet prepared 11-15-1956. The worksheet begins with John Coe b. 1794 near Hillsboro, Loudoun Co. Va., seventh son of Elijah & Ann Middleton (Smallwood) Coe. John's children were as follows Peter Marshal, Elijah William, Cynthia Ann, Mary, Robert Francis and John Wesley.John's wife was named Rachel and they moved to Union Co. In. around 1840. Some of the surnames listed are as follows. Harris,Carpenter,Burke, Hollingshead, Templeton, updyke,Nerby,Judy,Tate, Keith, Whitesel,Mugg , Clark, Campbell, and several more. If this links with your research I would be happy to share it with you.
Date: 11/2/98 6:20 PM RE: COE, William A. b. 1844 AL USA Sheran, Received your package today. The mail is apparently in working order between here and Custer City. After a little study I was able to decipher the script from the 1890 census. It states "Soldier - W.A. Coe; Rank - private; Company - A; Regiment - 6 US In (Infantry); Date of Enlistment - 17 Mar 1863; Date of Discharge - 15 Mar 1866; Length of Service - 0 Yrs., 11 Mos., 28 Days." You are correct. The March 17, 1863, is clear. But it must be a mistake. The discharge date of March 15, 1866, is equally clear. A March 1865 enlistment date would match with the "11 Mos., 28 Days" length of service. >From service records its clear that William A. Coe of Alabama joined the Union Army in 1865 in Columbus, OH. I'm more convinced than ever that the William A. Coe of Columbia, AL, and your William A. Coe of Henderson County, TX, are one and the same person. I'm a little confused as to the branch of US service to which he was attached. Federal Rolls of Prisoners of War indicate that he joined the Union while in prison at Camp Chase and was transferred to "Naval Rendezvous," Chicago, IL, March 20, 1865. The census entry indicates that he was in the infantry. If it was known that he had switched sides and joined the Union, I doubt that things were very comfortable for him back home in Alabama. That may be one reason for his removal to Texas. He obviously left Alabama some time after 1870 and was in Henderson County, TX, by Oct. 27, 1879, when he married Susan Litchfield. Do you know in which county the Litchfields lived in Alabama? Is it possible that they knew each other before moving to Henderson County, TX? Did you say her parents were Thomas H. and Mahala Jane Litchfield? There was almost twenty years age difference between William and Susan. Not so unusual, but makes me wonder why he did not marry until he was 35. He seems to have kept to himself. And as noted earlier, if he's the Columbia, AL, William A. Coe, he spent time under arrest and in the guard house while serving with "The Mobile Cadets." Perhaps this led to his transfer to the Louisiana Infantry. According to his service records, on March 1, 1864, at Mobile, AL, he was "transferred from 1st Alabama Heavy Artillery" to Company G, 4th Louisiana Infantry, Confederate Army. With that regiment he was captured Dec. 17, 1864, at Franklin, TN. Received at the military prison at Louisville, KY, December 22, he was transferred on to Camp Chase, Columbus, OH, Jan. 2, 1865. From there he signed the Oath of Allegiance to the Federal Government and enlisted for US military service; transferred to Chicago, March 20. Just 16 or 17-years-old when he first joined the Alabama Artillery in February 1861, he was a seasoned veteran by the time the war ended. I will send the request for military records to the National Archives. If we're lucky they'll be able to find a record. If we're real lucky, in his file will be an enlistment form which will include personal information which should prove invaluable. I must admit that I'm not overly optomistic. But let's keep our fingers crossed. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 11/2/98 8:23 AM RE: Re: COE, Samuel b. 1793 in Georgia USA Dave, Yes, Samuel Coe, who was born in 1793 in North Carolina or Georgia, first appears on record in a deed dated Oct. 11, 1818, in Wayne County, KY, listed as an heir of Rachel Coe Kiggins. On November 21, 1832, he is mentioned in county tax records as "Removed to Pulaski County, Ky." He is listed in the 1840 and 1860 censuses of Wayne County. He married May 11, 1826, in Wayne County, KY, Elvira Davis, born 1803 in KY. Children: 1. James S., b. 1827. 2. Lenna, b. 1829. 3. Elsie, b. 1831. 4. Mary, b. 1832. 5. Samuel W., b. Sept. 1833. 6. Sarah T., b. March 25, 1836. 7. Nancy, b. 1839. 8. Greenwood, b. 1840. 9. Anna Marion, b. 1842. 10. Joab O., b. Nov. 10, 1844. 11. Joshua, b. 1847. "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia" is still a work in progress. Other obligations prevent its completion. Good information continues to be discovered and added, however. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/31/98 2:03 PM RE: COE, William A. b. 1844 in AL USA Sheran, Yes, I do have the 1870 Texas census. There are no William or William A. Coes listed. There are two listed in 1880, your William A. Coe of Henderson County and William Alexander Coe of Collin County, who was born Jan. 24, 1843, in Jackson County, TN, son of Andrew Jackson and Rhoda (Martin) Coe. William A. Coe and Abner Coe are the only two Coes listed in the 1890 Texas Civil War veterans census. Abner Coe served with Company A, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, Union Army, during the war and later settled in Grayson County, TX. I believe your William Coe was still in Alabama in 1870. The William A. Coe of Henry County, AL, was there in 1869 involved in litigation over his father's estate. I believe he is the William Coe listed on page 245, dwelling 59, family 60, of the 1870 census of Dale County, AL. He was single and working as a farmhand for J.W. Culverhouse. In looking over my notes, I found a reference I had made beside William A. Coe in the 1850 census of Henry County, AL. Of course he was only six years old at the time, but in the right column I had written Company A, 6th Regiment. I made those notes many years ago. I cannot now recall to what I was referring. As I mentioned, two of his brothers served in Company A, 6th Regiment, Alabama Volunteers, Confederate Army. William A. Coe served in the Alabama Artillery--cannoners. They loaded, fired, hauled, etc, the cannons involved in the war. William's job was as a hostler (he took care of the horses). The "H.A." you saw would have been someone who served in the Heavy Artillery--big guns. Interestingly, descendants of William A. Coe's brothers Henry Isaac Coe, who moved to Hardin County, TX, and Thomas Smittson Coe, who moved to Geneva County, AL (on the Florida line), also claim that they lost land to which they were entitled. They claim that the oldest brother James Alexander Coe somehow maneuvered during settlement of their father's estate to cheat the others out of the family land. In fact, James Alexander Coe did file suit against his siblings in Henry County, AL. Although their father died in 1859, the estate was not settled until August 18, 1869. Each child received $8.75. James Alexander Coe, who was administrator of the estate, received the 320-acre family farm, but paid $505 for it. During litigation in July 1869 William A. Coe's residence was listed as Columbia, AL. His father, Andrew Jackson Coe, was postmaster there in 1855, 1856, and 1857. I'll wait until I receive the 1890 veterans records before doing more. I have a form partially completed for requesting records from the National Archives. Once I look over what you've sent, I'll send it off. Unfortunately, it takes a couple of months to hear back from them. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/29/98 6:40 PM RE: COE, William A., b. 1844 in AL USA Sheran, I have records of Coes who served in both the Union and Confederate Armies during the Civil War. There was a William A. Coe who served as a private with Company G, 4th Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, CSA, on whom I'm not sure I have information. But again this is not Company A. William Newton Coe, born February 26, 1836, in Polk County, TN, son of Vincent and Sarah Coe, did serve with Company A, 5th Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Rifles, Union Army. He also served with Company E, 5th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate Army. But I have a complete history of his family and he is not your ancestor. The most interesting Civil War William Coe was William Henry Harrison Coe, captain of Coe's Presidential Guards, Confederate Army. William H.H. Coe, son of Benjamin Estel and Mary E. (Digges) Coe was born in 1841 in Washington, DC. He enlisted as a sergeant at Lancaster Court House, VA, May 22, 1861, with Company I, Fortieth Regiment, Virginia Infantry, CSA. Promoted to lieutenant in April 1862, on July 30, 1862, he was promoted to captain. Under the command of Brigadier General John H. Winder at the Battle of Gaines Mill, VA, June 27, 1862, he was wounded in the left arm, while the 40th was positioned between Generals Longstreet and A.P. Hill. The arm was later amputated. In January and February 1863 he saw service in Richmond, in command of Coe's Company, Presidential Guards, charged with guarding Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis. Confederate records refer to him as "a gallant officer." William H.H. Coe's brother Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin E. Coe, born in 1839 in Washington, DC, also served in the Virginia 40th, Confederate Army. Thomas Jefferson Coe, born in 1823, son of Thomas and Jane (Glasscock) Coe of Claiborne County, MS, served under Captain George P. Crump and Colonel Jefferson Davis in Company H, 1st Mississippi Volunteers, during the Mexican War. He was later overseer of Brierfield Plantation, Confederate President Jefferson Davis's estate near Vicksburg, MS. I have a copy of a letter Thomas Coe wrote to President Davis requesting instructions on care of the plantation and its slaves. He named his oldest son Jefferson Davis Coe. William W. Coe, born in 1835 in Clairborne County, MS, son of Thomas and Martha (King) Coe, enlisted June 14, 1861, at Fort Smith, AR, to serve with Company F, 1st Arkansas Mounted Rifles, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. He was captured May 14, 1864, at Resaca, GA, and sent to the Union military prison at Louisville, KY, May 22, 1864. The following day he was transferred to Alton, IL, and on Aug. 23 he was transferred to Camp Douglas, IL. Held until June 17, 1865, when he was finally released in accordance with General Orders Number 109, he received the Confederate Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN. William Alexander Coe, born January 24, 1843, in Jackson County, TN, son of Andrew Jackson and Rhoda L. (Martin) Coe, enlisted August 5, 1861, in Nashville, TN, with Company H "Davis' Company," Eighth Regiment, Cheatham's Division, Polk's Corp, Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, Confederate Army. Under the command of D.L. Donaldson, then M.J. Wright, and later J.C. Carter, his brigade operated in Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. Elected second lieutenant August 5, 1863, on April 9, 1865, his company was reorganized into Company D, First Consolidation Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers. First lieutenant with the latter company, he surrendered under Joseph E. Johnson in North Carolina, April 26, 1865. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Franklin, TN, he escaped and rejoined his company. In June 1880 he moved to Farmington, TX, and died July 2, 1931, at Siloam Springs, AR. I cannot find a William A. Coe listed as having served in a Company A, North or South. There were no William Coes who served from Texas, either Confederate or Union. Sorry I can not be of more help at the present. Hopefully I'll be able to decipher the 1890 veterans records. Then we can only pray that they are accurate. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/26/98 8:35 PM RE: COE, Josephine b. June 23, 1848, Wilson Co TN USA A.K., I saw your request for information on Josephine Coe. Josephine Coe, born June 23, 1848, in Wilson County, TN, died October 12, 1872, daughter of James Rather and Martha (Irby) Coe, married June 13, 1868, in Wilson County, Thomas Washington Phelps, born November 8, 1849, died July 6, 1884, at Celina, TX. A member of Bethel Church of Christ, Greenwood, TN, she joined the church September 23, 1866. Burial was at Bethany Cemetery. Her daughter Sally Elizabeth Phelps was born March 5, 1870. Did you mention that Thomas and Josephine had other children? I would be glad to exchange information with you. I would be extremely interested in the photo to which you referred. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/24/98 8:41 AM RE: Re: COE, Missouri Louisa b. 1808 Hardin Co KY USA Virginia, Thank you so much for the Ardrey information. It was very helpful and much appreciated. Missouri Ardrey, as mentioned, was the daughter of James and Martha (Hudspeth) Coe of Hardin County, KY, and St. Landry Parish, LA. Although both of their families were from Surry County, NC, they were married April 5, 1802, in Warren County, KY. James, who was a son of Timothy Coe IV, served in 1802 as an Ensign with the Third Regiment, Kentucky Cornstalk Militia, and with Thompson's Company, 16th Regiment, Louisiana Militia, during the War of 1812. Their children were as follows: 1. Louisiana C., b. 1804 in TN. 2. ?Thomas. 3. Missouri Louisa, b. 1808 Hardin County, KY. 4. David Hudspeth, b. Sept. 2, 1812, Hardin County, KY; gggf of Boyer Coe, "Mr. Universe." 5. Ulysses, b. 1822 St. Landry Parish, LA. 6. Amazon, b. 1824 St. Landry Parish, LA. 7. James Timothy, b. April 1827 St. Landry Parish, LA. Served with Company K, 16th Louisiana Infantry, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. Captured at the Battle of Stones River, he died March 25, 1863, in Chicago, IL, while being held prisoner by the Union. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/19/98 5:21 PM RE: COE, William Jeff b. Dec. 21, 1891, Clay Co NC USA Cathy, Delighted to receive your letter today. Thank you for the inquiry about "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." The book has been many years in the making and has not yet gone to press. Much work is yet to be done to sort out various branches of the Southern Coe family. Twenty years in research, it is hoped the book will become the definitive authority on Southern Coe families. It traces the early history of the family from Thomas Coe, who was at Jamestown, to Richard Coe, 1651 immigrant to Charles County, MD, to Timothy Coe, immigrant of 1652 to Northampton County, VA, and many others. Your particular branch of the family can be traced to Francis Peter Coe, who first appears on record in 1772 in Shelburne Parish, Loudoun County, VA. From there the family moved in the 1790s to Pittsylvania County, VA, where Francis and his wife Nancy last appear on record June 1, 1818. They were the parents of sons Pearson, b. 1766; Jacob, b.c. 1770; William, b. 1779; and daughters Sarah, m. Nov. 24, 1802; Mary, m. Nov. 10, 1805; and Anna, m. Sept. 23, 1807. Your great grandfather William Jeff Coe was born December 21, 1891, in Clay County, NC, son of William Daniel and Sarah (Watson) Coe. A railroad worker, he moved to Titus County, TX, where he married May 9, 1915, Annie B. Fulce, born February 15, 1898, in Memphis, TN, died December 31, 1991, at Cookville, TX, daughter of Melvin and Mary F. (Barber) Fulce. William Jeff Coe died in Titus County, September 8, 1975. Burial was at the Taylor-Cookville Cemetery. Children (b. in Titus County, TX): 1. James William, b. Oct. 24, 1917. 2. Katherine Virginia, b. March 24, 1919. (your grandmother) 3. Gordon Harrison, b. Oct. 13, 1921. 4. Donald Lee, b. May 22, 1928. I hope this is helpful. If I can be of further service, please don't hesitate to contact me. I have added your name to the list of those interested in a copy of the book when it is published. Carl Robert Coe.
Date: 10/16/98 7:17 PM RE: COE, William A. b. 1844 Henry Co AL USA Sheran, Thanks for the e-mail. Always great to hear from you. I did find another William Coe in Alabama Confederate records. And to add to the confusion, the other William A. Coe, who enlisted May 5, 1862, in Tallapoosa, AL, with Company F, 46th Alabama Infantry, CSA, was captured May 1, 1863, at Port Gibson, MS. Paroled from the military prison at Alton, IL, he was captured again August 22, 1863. Sent to Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD, where he was held as a prisoner of war, after several months in prison, he too switched sides and joined the Union Army, January 25, 1864. He was released at Point Lookout, MD, immediately afterward. I'm not sure of the identity of this other William Coe. William A. and D.K. (Ransom) Coe's son William, b. 1836 in Alabama, enlisted at Natchitoches, LA, May 6, 1862, with Company B, 11th Battalion, Louisiana Infantry, Confederate Army. His brother Ransom Coe enlisted on the same day with the same company. Company B. was later consolidated with Company K, Crescent Regiment. Admitted to the hospital at Shreveport, LA, August 11, 1864, on August 16 he was transferred to Natchitoches. Paroled June 10, 1865, he later lived at Natchitoches and in Red River Parish where he had acquired a 320 farm, October 1 , 1860. It appears that he is the William Coe listed with a large family in the 1880 census of Bossier Parish, LA. I will keep you posted on progress. Carl Robert Coe
Date: 10/15/98 6:23 PM RE: COE, Pvt. William A. Company K, 21st Alabama CSA Larry, I have William A. Coe's Confederate service records and they are explicit as to his affiliation with "The Mobile Cadets." Born in 1844 at Columbia, AL, on the Chattahootchee River, where his father was postmaster, he was a son of Andrew Jackson and Sidney Ann Coe. He enlisted Feb. 26, 1861, in Columbia to serve as a private with Company B, First Battalion, Alabama Artillery. Ordered to Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan, where he worked as a teamster and hostler, on Oct. 11, 1862, he was assigned to the Quartermaster Department. By order of Colonel Cowell, on June 20, 1863, he was transferred to "The Mobile Cadets," Company K, 21st Regiment, Alabama Infantry & Artillery, CSA. In October and November 1863 he was reported as "under arrrest at his Post." In February 1864 records of the Cadets report him as being "In Guard House at Post -- Transferred from Co. K, 21st A.R. Reenlisted," which he did February 26. It appears that he transferred to Company G, Fourth Regiment, Louisiana Infantry, Confederate Army, March 31, 1864. With that company he was captured at the Battle of Franklin, TN, Dec. 17, 1864, and was taken to Nashville as a prisoner. Transferred to the military prison at Louisville, KY, he was received there Dec. 22. Later transferred to infamous Camp Chase, Columbus, OH, he was held there into January 1865 when he applied for the oath of allegiance. He then joined the Union Army and transferred to Naval Rendezvous, Chicago, IL, March 20, 1865. After the War he returned to Henry County, AL, where he appears on record in 1869. The following year he was living with J.W. Culverhouse at Skipperville, AL. From there he appears to have moved to Henderson County, TX, where he had a family and died about 1896. William A. Coe's brother James Alexander Coe, born Nov. 25, 1838, in Barbour County, AL, served as a lieutenant with Clanton's Brigade, Alabama 6th Cavalry, Confederate Army, and married April 6, 1860, in Early County, GA, Louisa Virginia McGriff, cousin of US Vice President William Rufus King. His brother Burrell J. Coe served in Company G, 13th Georgia Infantry, Confederate Army, and died July 5, 1862, in Richmond, VA. His brother John Jasper Coe, b. June 17, 1842, enlisted June 4, 1861, at Corinth, MS, to serve with Company A, 6th Alabama Infantry, Confederate Army, and was surrendered to the Union Army at Lynchburg, VA, by General Lee in April 1865. I hope this is helpful. If you need further information on William A. Coe or his Confederate service, please let me know. Carl Robert Coe

Then the parents are Elder Joseph COE and Abigail MOONE. I have some info on these people but not very many things about there lives. Like what occupations and such. Some of them I only know of their birth and death dates and nothing else. Does anybody connect with any of these COEs and can anybody furnish any more information? Thank You Debby McKee >>

Date: 9/30/98 8:57 PM RE: COE, Samuel b. 1778 Fairfax County, VA, USA Clark, Glad to hear from you. Hopefully I can help straighten the mess. Samuel Coe, born about 1778 in Fairfax County, VA, son of Walter and Mary Coe, married, presumably in Prince William County, VA, Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" Leachman, born about 1780, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Foster) Leachman. They had twelve children, including Mahala Coe, b. Jan. 13, 1805, and Alexander Hamilton Coe, b. March 22, 1807. All were born in Wood County, VA. First appearing on record in Wood County in 1806, his home was located near Reedy Creek, an area that became Wirt County in 1848. He, William Wells, William Petty, John Petty, and John Willson are credited with being the first white settlers in that area. He also owned land in Prince William County, VA, which he sold to Rutt Johnson in 1809. In 1830 he operated a hotel in Elizabeth, VA, later Wirt County seat. He last appears on public record as a 60~70-year-old male in the 1840 census of Wood County. A 50~60-year-old-female appears with him in the census that year. As previously mentioned, it would be wise to disregard information in the papers to which you refer. The material, though helpful in many ways, is inaccurate. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe
