    3. Shelley, Thank you so much!! You are so kind to check those cemetery records. The information was extremely helpful. The Samuel T. Coe you found at Spring Hill Cemetery was Samuel Tilden Coe, b. Sept. 22, 1851, in Frederick County, VA, d. Dec. 31, 1930, at Spring Hill, KS, son of John W. and Margaret E. (Cogil) Coe of Frederick County. The John W. Coe buried at Lenexa Cemetery was b. May 8, 1840, at Gilead Station, OH, d. Feb. 9, 1902, at Lenexa, KS, son of Abraham and Margaret (Nickols) Coe of Loudoun County, VA, and Morrow County, OH. Samuel Tilden Coe's grandfather was Samuel Coe, b. 1791 in Loudoun County, VA, brother of the above mentioned Abraham Coe, b. Dec. 23, 1806, in Frederick County, VA, both sons of William and Elizabeth (Gore) Coe of Loudoun and Frederick Counties, VA. Thanks again for your help. Can't wait to see what you find at the courthouse. Carl Robert Coe

    1. [COE-L] COE, Stephen b. 1775 South Carolina USA
    2. CARL R COE
    3. Date: 9/12/98 11:31 PM RE: COE, Stephen b. 1775 South Carolina USA To those seeking to find Stephen Coe's origins in South Carolina, let me add my thoughts. First, good luck! You're going to need it. Not to discourage anyone, my personal opinion is that no record of him is to be found there. Why would there be? He supposedly went to East Tennessee in the 1790s when he was in his twenties. In what census would he have appeared? 1790? He would have been too young. 1800? He was in Tennessee. He has not been found on any census there and his children all listed their births as Tennessee. He may have been dead by 1830, but what about 1810 and 1820. A suggestion would be to check for Cole as Coes are often found recorded that way. But, of course he may have been one of the many thousands who were missed. Back to South Carolina. It is extremely unlikely that a man in his teens would have owned land. So there would be no deed records. Vital records were not kept. So there would be no birth record. Marriages were often performed by itinerant preachers in backwoods location and many failed to make it to public repositories. And he may well have been married in Tennessee. There were Coes in South Carolina from the early 1700s. Henry Coe, a carpenter, died in Charleston, April 27, 1738. Darkes Coe, a child, died in Charleston, June 12, 1739. William Coe, a child, died in Charleston, June 30, 1739. On Aug. 22, 1743, Thomas Beale made a will in Charleston, leaving "40 to friend William Coe for his care of me in my sickness." William Dawe of Beaufort County made a will Jan. 20, 1745, naming his daughters Deana Dawe, Sarah Dixon and Lydia Coe. Joseph Coe is listed as a man over 45 years of age in the 1800 census of Newberry County. And then there is Edward and Lucy Coe of Edgefield County. An interesting family. In 1774, after appearing on record in Charleston District when he leased land from Daniel Tollason, he was granted a 300-acre tract of land on Beaver Dam Creek in Edgefield County. He sold 100 acres of the tract Jan. 10, 1788, to Alexander Burnet. In 1786 Edward served on an Edgefield County jury. Edward and Lucy Coe's daughter Rachel, who died in 1829 in Upson County, GA, married Moses Haddox. Their son Philip Alexander Haddox, born Jan. 10, 1800, was accused of the murder of prominent neighbor Jethro Jackson, Feb. 16, 1829, in Upson County. He quickly added his mother's maiden name to his own and fled to Texas as Philip Haddox Coe. There he married seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Ann Parker, born April 12, 1812, in St. Tammany Parish, LA, daughter of Jesse and Sarah Parker and said to have been a cousin of Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of legendary Comanche war chief Quanah Parker. Phil Coe first settled on the Brazos River in Washington County, TX, then went on to homestead 4,446 acres in the Coe Valley of Gonzales County, May 4, 1831. A delegate to the Texas Consultation in 1835, he was member of the General Council of the Provisional Government and was sent with Sidney Sherman to assist at the Alamo. He served under Sam Houston as a commander of one of the baggage trains at San Jacinto and recieved additional lands for his service. He was murdered in a Gonzales saloon Dec. 6, 1852, by neighbor John Oliver. Interestingly, there may have been a connection between the family of Edward and Lucy Coe of Edgefield County and the family of Isaac Coe of Columbia County, GA. The two counties are separated only by the Savannah River. Isaac Coe's son Isaac Monroe Coe, who was born Jan. 14, 1811, in Georgia, died June 5, 1874, in Waller County, TX, married Feb. 1, 1835, in Stewart County, GA, Eliza Oliver Barrington, born May 21, 1817, in Edgefield County, SC, died April 8, 1880, at Williamson, TX, daughter of Willis and Sarah Cebelle (Mathews) Barrington. For some reason, in Eliza (Barrington) Coe's Bible is recorded the birth date of Philip Haddox Coe. Then there is the most interesting Leverett Hudson Coe of Columbia, SC. Not to be confused with Levin H. Coe, Speaker of the Tennessee State Senate and who was nominated for Vice President of the United States at the Democratic National Convention in 1848, Leverett Hudson Coe was born Aug. 10, 1787, son of Aaron and Sevilla (Bishop) Coe of Durham, CT, and Carthage, NY. A resident of Columbia, SC, until 1823 when he moved to St. Augustine, FL, he was an attorney and friend of John C. Calhoun, fellow South Carolinian and US Secretary of War. After moving to St. Augustine, Leverett enjoyed the respect of the community there until an unfortunate incident on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1824. While spending time at a local tavern, he observed a billard game between Judge Joseph L. Smith of the Superior Court of the Eastern District of Florida and Eusebio Gomez. The game went on into the night and Coe, who thought that Smith was obliously cheating, finally said something to Smith about 10:00pm. At the remark, Smith became enraged and began to beat Coe about the head and body with a stick. Finally, Attorney General Edgar Macon, who had an office near the tavern, pulled Smith off fearing that Coe was near death. With his cheek bones broken and confined to bed in great pain, Leverett struggled off a letter to Secretary of War Calhoun the following Wednesday. Complaining of Smith's attack and of other abuses by the judge, he pleaded for an investigation. Fearing the letter had not had the desired effect, on Aug. 30th he fired off a letter to President James Monroe seeking justice. In December, when an investigation was finally concluded, Gomez filed an affidavit claiming Coe had started the fight and the citizens of St. Augustine filed a letter of recommedation for Judge Smith, claiming the highest respect for him. Leverett Coe has a place in history for another matter. His brother, Rev. Chester Seymour Coe, a Baptist minister, was the father of Cyrenus J. Coe, later known as Captain William Coe, leader of the notorius Coe Gang of the Oklahoma Neutral Strip. Hanged in Pueblo, CO, April 11, 1868, Coe's exploits left a legacy of "romance of crime . . . that has not been excelled in the west." (Colorado Tribune, May 13, 1868) Again, good luck to those who wish to take on the task. You may find something that will lead to other discoveries. South Carolina records have not been overly researched. Perhaps you will uncover information that will help others link their roots, which to me would be an equal reward. Detailed searches of county records would be in order. Start where we know Coes lived: Beaufort, Charleston, Richmond, Newberry, and Edgecomb Counties. You have my best wishes. I will be happy to share anything you feel would be helpful. Please keep us informed of your findings. Carl Robert Coe

    3. Hi Vonda I'm always glad to get additional information so the records would be nice. I believe I will start in SC with you and I'll try and find the Hart's maybe which will lead us to Stephen. It just seems that he couldn't have always been a pauper---there must be some kind of history for this guy or maybe at least find a family for him, but of course that's the fun of the search right?? I went to Lecy's grave this past weekend and that cemetery is a real mess but I'll send you a copy of the pictures when I get them. I'll keep in touch with any Stephen Coe findings. Later cuz. 3. COE COLLEGE I've noticed numerous posts on Deacon Daniel Coe, founder of Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA, and thought I should perhaps put forth some information on him to clear the record. Daniel Coe, who was born May 26, 1794, in Durham, NY, was a son of Daniel and Martha Coe of Durham, CT, Freehold, NY, and Durham, NY. He married (1) Rebecca Clark, daughter of Jacob Clark of Plainfield, MA; (2) Mercy Wattles. He taught school for a few years before becoming a farmer. While traveling in the west in 1852, he invested $1500 in land in Cedar Rapids, IA, which he deeded in 1853 toward the foundation of the "Cedar Rapids Collegiate Institute." The trustees purchased two lots in downtown Cedar Rapids plus 80 acres at the edge of town with Coe's money. The school operated for several years as the Cedar Rapids Institute, then was known as "Parsons Seminary," and as "Coe Collegiate Institute." In 1881 the institution was incorporated as a college and named "Coe College" in honor of its first donor. A deacon in the Congregational Church, Daniel Coe became interested in the education of Blacks in the South and in 1869 sold his farm in Greene County, NY, and moved to Talladega, AL. There he took charge of mission work among local Blacks. He died there March 3, 1872. Child: 1. May Rebecca, b. Oct. 24, 1846, in Durham, NY; m. Dr. James Erastus Jewell, MD, son of James and Almira (Day) Jewell. Their son James Ralph Jewell was later Dean of the College of Education, University of Arkansas. Mary (Coe) Jewell lived at Moran, KS, in 1941. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe

    3. Sue, Thank you for contacting me. I think I may be able to add to your research. Joshua Coe, who married October 26, 1784, in Caswell County, NC, Rachel Paul, daughter of Samuel and Judith (Burton) Paul, moved to Wilkes County, GA, after marriage. He appears on record there February 7, 1791, when he sold to Carter Newsom a bed, plate, dutch oven, spinning wheel, etc. In 1793 he was reported as a member of the Columbia County, GA, militia. The "Augusta Chronicle" of November 30, 1793, reported him on a list of Wilkes County tax delinquints. The family later moved to Wayne County, KY, where Rachel is reported as "Rachel Kiggins Deceased" in a deed dated October 11, 1818. Her children Elizabeth Coe, Samuel Coe and Nancy Kiggins are reported in the same document as "being heirs of Rachel Kiggins Deceased all of Wayne County and State of Kentucky." Joshua apparently died about 1800. Children: 1. Elizabeth, m. July 14, 1822, in Wayne Co., KY, John Morrow. 2. Samuel, b. 1793 in GA; m. May 11, 1826, in Wayne Co., KY, Elvira Davis. Samuel and Elvira (Davis) Coe had eleven children and have a host of descendants in south central Kentucky. I hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe

    2. Linda, As one Stephen Coe researcher my answer to your questions are No, No, and I wish I knew! :-) No, the paupers records do not mention a wife. No., Stephen never shows up on a census (or tax list or anything else) and where to go next is anyone's guess. I have checked all early Tennessee marriages and find no record of marriage for Stephen Coe and Mary Hart. I'm sure Carl has done the same and if he can't find it nobody can! It appears the only thing we can hope for is the discovery of a Bible record. Since Wesley Allen Coe indicated in the 1880 census that his parents were born in SC I suppose that is where we should go next. I spent one day at the library in the SC section then went on vacation but I'm home now and headed that way again sometime this week. Probably need to check Georgia too -- like the Caseys they may have come through there before going to Tennessee. If you would like copies of the census info I have on Stephen's sons let me know. I will need time to get it typed. Vonda Dihm

    2. Carl: I just returned from Florida today and am delighted to see that you are still in there swinging on the Stephen Coe issue. Hang in there -- we will convince them all eventually! Vonda Dihm In a message dated 9/3/98 7:35:14 PM Central Daylight Time, CarlRCoe@compuserve.com writes: << I was astonished to see yet another listing for Robert Coe as the father of Elizabeth Coe Casey yesterday. I can say of a certainty that there was no one by the name of Robert Coe south of the Mason Dixon prior to 1830. And those who have now added Stephen as his middle name completely confound me. There was no Robert or Robert Stephen Coe. Elizabeth Coe married May 27, 1829, in McMinn County, TN, Moses Casey, son of Ambler and Polly (Ellison) Casey. At that time living in McMinn County was a Stephen Coe who lived on public assistance. On June 5, 1826, the court of McMinn County appropriated $40 for his maintenance. Stephen Coe previously lived as a pauper in Roane County, where the Roane County court would annually set aside $20 for his care. I challenge anyone to provide a document with a Robert Coe living in the South prior to 1830 listed on it. You will not be able to do so. On the other hand, I have meticulously leafed through public records in both Roane and McMinn Counties and can tell you that Stephen Coe was indeed a real person. The date of Stephen Coe's birth is approxiamately 1775. It is verified that he was born in South Carolina by information provided to the census taker in 1880 when son Wesley Allen Coe gave that state as the place of birth of both his mother and father. Interestingly, Wesley married Rebecca Ellison, who it may be found was of the same family as Ambler Casey's wife. Information must be verified with fact. Carl Robert Coe >>

My family has used the spelling COAY since John H. According to my father, Howard G. Coay, a great grandson of John Coey, John Coey was killed in the Civil War. His gravestone was mistakenly engraved as John Coay and his widow could not get her widow's pension unless she registered under the name "Coay." If anyone knows anything about this family, I would greaty appreciate hearing it. I have not been able to find anything prior to John H. Linda Carroll lindacarroll@sprintmail.com

    3. Carl I love reading your posts to the list because you're so interesting with your facts details---it's a pleasure sir. You seem to have such a hold on the Stephen Coe line that I would like to know what I can do to help the rest of the researchers of Stephen with locating his parentage, marriage, death, etc. I think it would be such a waste for me to continue the research from point one when it's all duplication, so is there a point that I could go to now and start digging there so it will make our efforts count for everyone. Some questions I'm wondering is in these pauper records do you ever find anything about his wife? Have anyone ever found him in any census. Where would the Stephen Coe researchers like me to dig first?? I'm most diligent and am so glad to help because he is my ancestor too, so please either Carl, Vonda or Juanita tell me where do we split it up and where can I start? 3. Researchers: After doing a little checking, I found that the Vincent Coe who married Sarah Carson was actually Vinton Coe, b. Feb. 13, 1840, at Beallsville, OH, son of James S. and Jemima (Thornberry) Coe, of Ohio County, VA, and Monroe County, OH. He married Aug. 22, 1862, in Ohio County, VA, Sarah E. Carson, daughter of Joseph and Anna (Brown) Carson. They moved to Jasper County, IA, where Vinton was a blacksmith, hardware dealer and justice of the peace. They had just one child: 1. James A. Coe, b. June 16, 1863, in Washinton Co., PA; m. Aug. 13, 1890, at Berwick, IL, Ida Theresa Beck, b. July 8, 1866, daughter of Rudolph A. and Anna Marie (Maderly) Beck. They had two sons who died at birth in 1893 and 1896. Vinton Coe had a brother Rev. Joseph Warren Coe, b. May 17, 1842, at Beallsville, OH, who was educated at Wheeling College and served with Company D, Twelveth West Virginia Volunteers, GAR, during the Civil War. He was a Methodist minister after the war and died Jan. 25, 1885, in Indianola, IA. Unfortunately, the idenity of Vincent Coe's wife is still to be learned. But at least now we know it wasn't Sarah Carson. Vincent Coe was born 1812 probably Roane County, TN, died 1850 Polk County, TN, m. about 1835, Sarah ________, born 1815 in KY. They lived in McMinn and Polk Counties, TN. Sarah lived in Polk County, TN, and Blount County, AL, after Vincent's death, and reportedly ran a boarding house in Benton, TN, for a while. They had the following children: 1. William Newton, b. Feb. 26, 1836. Civil War. 2. Jason, b. 1839. Civil War. 3. Sarah, b. 1841. 4. Francis M., b. 1844. Civil War. 5. Caroline C., b. July 17, 1848. 6. Henry Brooks Clay, b. July 11, 1852. 7. James Riley, b. Jan. 1857. Please note that Henry Brooks Clay Coe and his brother James Riley Coe were born after Vincent's reported death. Hope this is helpful. Carl Robert Coe

    1. [COE-L] COE, Sylvester b 1845 Baltimore County, MD USA
    2. CARL R COE
    3. Chris, Thanks for the information. It's extremely helpful and much appreciated. With what you sent, I was able to locate John Thomas Coe in the 1900 Census of St. Clair County, IL, living at 1224 Rock Road, East Saint Louis. An Edward McDade, b. Jan. 1879, was living with the family at the time. Thomas Coe was born about 1800. On September 22, 1835, he purchased from Nicholas Low part of "The Road Tract" on the east side of the York Road, in New Market, MD--now Maryland Line, MD. He also owned part of "Lawson's Pleasant Hill" on the west side of the York Road in New Market. York Road of course is the road that runs from Baltimore to York, PA. It appears likely that Thomas was a son of William and Hannah (Barber) Coe of Baltimore County. I say likely because of the lack of records on this family. There were very few Coes in Baltimore County in the early 1800s. Just two families of which I'm aware. William and Hannah Coe's children settled in the same area as Thomas. And there were many of them. I have identified nine children, including James and Joshua Coe who lived at Cub Hill on the York Road. It's an interesting family with many stories and a number of descendants. Juliet Ann Coe, born in 1820, was the daughter of Lemuel Eaton. I don't know a great deal about them other than Lemuel was a farmer born 1790 in Maryland. He lived in the 2nd District of Baltimore County, near the families of William and Hannah (Barber) Coe. Juliet had a sister Mary born in 1826. Susan fell from the face of the earth with Sylvester. I have been able to find nothing of her after she moved to Schuylkill County, PA. By the way, William Coe, who I believe was Thomas' father, was born about 1762 in Baltimore County, son of another William Coe who served in the American Revolution from Baltimore County. He died in 1782 leaving a large family. William and Hannah Coe lived on the York Road, near the Great Gunpowder River. They were married January 31, 1791, at the First Baptist Church in Baltimore. How did you come to know Sylvester as Weston Coe? Was this the name passed down through the family? Please tell me more about John Thomas Coe's son Louis Sylvester. Are you in contact with Louis's descendants? Do you have birth dates for John Thomas's children? I have seven listed. Were there others? I hope this is helpful. I will be more than happy to share whatever additional information you'd like to know. Carl Robert Coe

    3. Shelley, I was surprised to see that you live in Olathe. I have been searching for information on John W. Coe, b. May 8, 1840, at Gilead Station, OH, d. Feb. 8, 1902, Kansas City, MO, son of Abraham and Margaret (Nichols) Coe of Loudoun County, VA, and Morrow County, OH. He m. March 29, 1886, in Delaware County, OH, Elmora Breyfogle Aug. 1855 in OH, d. 1914 in Johnson County, KS. Both he and his wife are buried at Lenexa Cemetery in Johnson County. They owned a 160-acre farm between Nelaro and Lenexa, near Olathe. They had children (b. in Johnson County, KS): 1. child, d. young. 2. Walter N., d. Aug. 1, 1877. Buried at Lenexa Cemetery. 3. Edith, b. April 1879. 4. Nora E., b. Oct. 1880, schoolteacher. 5. Pearl M., July 1882, bank clerk. 6. Freda H., b. 1887. 7. John W., b. July 1887, d. 1959, railroad conductor. Buried at Lenexa Cemetery. I'm extermely anxious to learn more about this family. They moved to Olathe immediately after marriage, in 1886 or 1887. Would it be possible to call upon your kindness? I'm wondering what records might be there at the courthouse in Olathe. I'm assuming there should be marriage, and possibly birth and death records of this family. If you have some time one day, would it be too much trouble to ask you to check public records at the courthouse to see what might be found? I would be extremely grateful for anything you could help with. Thank you for your consideration. Carl Robert Coe

    1. [COE-L] COE, Sylvester "Weston" b 1845 Baltimore County, MD USA

    3. Chris, So glad to hear from you. My great grandfather William Coe was born in Baltimore December 5, 1836, and came here to Ohio with his father about 1850. We've been here since. Back in 1979 I became curious about the family's origins and began asking my father questions. He knew nothing. He did not know his grandparents names or anything about them. This made me all the more curious. I started asking his older siblings questions, and found the name of their grandparents and where they lived. One thing led to another and I've been at this now for nineteen years. I've collected an incredible database of Coe information, including 17,542 census entries, 6933 deaths, 9022 marriages, and 6206 births. I've managed to locate early immigrant ancestors of many Southern Coe families and have developed extensive biographies of many early Coes. All this is to be published in a book titled "The Coe Families of Maryland and Virginia." With my great grandfather having come from Baltimore, much of my research has been centered in that region. My search of Sylvester "Weston" Coe resulted from estate records uncovered at the Baltimore County courthouse in Towson. The records were rather vague and it may have been September 1870 when he died. The cause was stated as typhoid fever. There was a surprising amount of family material in the records. Where did you find him listed as "Weston." I suspect it may have been a nickname or a spelling corruption of Vester. I have sought diligently for information on his sons Jarrett Gardner and John Thomas. Daughter Katherine was not mentioned in the estate records. I often wondered if the widow and children had not gone with Juliet Ann (Eaton) Coe, who moved to Hancock County, OH, after Sylvester's father's death. I went through public records at the Hancock County courthouse in Findlay, but found nothing. She married (2) June 15, 1852, David Sampson. I will be happy to share my colllection of information on Sylvester Coe's family. What can you tell me of John Thomas, Jarrett Gardner and their sister? Looking forward to your reply. Carl Robert Coe
