    3. Hi Carl...enjoyed the narrative on the Deep South Coe's...but don't forget another Confederate prisoner Coe...Edward Menen Coe! Born 7/1/1821, Loudoun County, VA., died 8/6/1917, age 96 yrs., 1 mo., 5 days...and who served his prison time in Alton, Illinois, before returning to Novelty, Mo., where his pregnant wife died in childbirth weeks before his release. A question to you Carl....is there a source of proof of the birth of William Coe, b. 1727 Chas. County, Md.,/D. 10/9/1792?...or proof of Jane Milstead's birth of 1731? At one time, you mentioned Lisa Connell, of Huntington, MD...is she a source that I could question via email? Edward milstead Coe seems not to have had a very loving relationship w/dtr 'Jain'...given what he left her! Thanks and me ke aloha pumehana, Carl (kindest regards)...Jan Sing CARL R COE wrote: > Cindy, > > Thanks for the reply. 3. Cindy, Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear of the struggle with your addition. Sometimes they just don't know how good they have it. Isaac Coe of Manningham was born May 15, 1816, at Middleton, CT, son of Eli and Lois (Coe) Coe. He married Oct. 6, 1846, in Middleton, Sarah L. Bacon, born June 30, 1828, daughter of Ebenezer and Lavinia (Wilcox) Bacon. I found record of him at the courthouse in Greenville when I was there two years ago. Listed as Isaac Coe of Manningham, on April 29, 1858, he purchased a patent from J.N. Skaggs of Talledega, AL, which was recorded in Butler County deeds. >From Alabama this Isaac Coe moved to Nebraska City, NE, where he engaged in real estate, railroad building and freighting. He served as a Union general during the Civil War and at his death Jan. 16, 1899, was reported as one of Nebraska's earliest and wealthiest citizens. Yes, there is little question of the relationship of Edward Hampton Coe and Isaac Monroe Coe. In addition to the Stewart County, GA, connection, they are listed side-by-side in the 1860 Montgomery County, TX, census (p.99, dwellings 251, 252). What do you think of the conection of Perry Coe, Drury W. Coe and William A. Coe? As mentioned, Drury, who served with Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War, lived just three house from William A. Coe in the 1870 census of Rutledge, AL (p.65, dwellings 9,12). He lived with Perry Coe in the 1850 census of Crawford County, GA. Both Drury and Perry's families lived within a house of one another at Thomaston, Upson County, GA, in 1860 (p.597, dwellings 459,461). Drury, who is an interesting character, stood five feet, five inches tall, had dark hair, blue eyes and a florid complexion. He lived at Griffin, GA, in the early 1860s and enlisted with the Confederate Army, July 1, 1862, at Thomason. He joined General Morgan at Chattanooga, TN, shortly afterward. He saw his first action August 12 at Gallatin, TN, but served much of the remainder of 1862 in detached service at the hospital in Knoxville, TN. On June 27, 1863, he was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in Dalton, GA, for debilitation. On Aug. 12, 1864, he was reported as camped at the fairgrounds in Atlanta, GA. Six days later he was captured by Union General Harvey at Morganfield, KY, and was sent to Evansville, IN, as a prisoner of war. Received at military command headquarrters in Indianapolis August 24, he was held at Camp Morton until May 20, 1865, when he was released. After the war he moved to Rutledge, AL, where he took up residence with Mrs. Jane Vann, leaving his second wife Sarah F. Langley, whom he married Feb. 20, 1860, in Upson County with daughter Sarah and son Norman Jackson Coe, b. Jan. 1854. In January 1871 he filed for divorce from Sarah in Butler County, AL. From there he went to Santa Rosa and Pensacola, FL, where was married three more times. He and Jane Vann had a son Lawson Monroe Coe, born April 14, 1867, in Crenshaw County, AL. Lawson, in his later years, sold peanuts on the streets of Waynesboro, MS, where he died Aug. 16, 1939. Perry, born 1818, apparently died before 1860. He married Dec. 23, 1843, in Tallapoosa County, AL, Laura Ann Langley, born 1829 in Georgia. They had several children, including sons Francis Marion Coe, b. 1845 in Alabama, and William Jackson Coe, b. 1847 in Alabama. William Jackson Coe married Nov. 5, 1865, in Pike County, GA, Nancy A. Robinson, b. June 1847. They later lived in Meriwether County, GA, but had no children. Francis Marion Coe is more of a mystery. He lived in Pike and Upson Counties, GA, where he married July 31, 1862, Margaret Elizabeth Martin. He was apparently the father of the four Coe sons who moved with the widow Coe to Marshall County, AL. One of these sons was William M. Coe, b. Jan. 5, 1865, in Georgia. William's grandson, Jerry Logan Coe, b. Jan. 10, 1933, in Columbus, GA, ran for Attorney General of Alabama in 1962, when he was just 29 years old. Maybe I'm making this too difficult. There were very few Coes in the South in the early 1800s. The only ones of the 1850 census of which I'm aware that we don't know their heritage is Perry, Andrew Jackson and Drury W. Perhaps they were all sons of Isaac? Your insights are always most appreciated. Carl Robert Coe

    1. [COE-L] PLEASE READ--Server Problems
    2. Joyce Cummings
    3. Hi folks-- For those who have not heard about it, Rootsweb, who host this mailing list, had a major server failure last weekend. This was the cause of problems that some of you may have experienced in not receiving all or part of the messages between last Friday and yesterday afternoon. The server was up and down a few times allowing some things to trickle through but not long enough to restore normal performance. Most of the messages sent during the down-time would have been held by the sender's ISP and eventually should have appeared. Repairs are now reported as complete. If you sent messages that made it to the list, they will be in the archives which can be accessed by going to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Type COE in the box and it will take you to the archives of this list. You won't be able to check on messages that you have sent within the last 24 hours because these archives are constructed from the Digest version of the list. Our Digest is set to be sent whenever the size exceeds 40,000 characters or at least once each 24 hours. If you want to review all of the messages that have been on the list since September 1, use "Sep" without the quotes on the search engine with the 1998 box checked. If you just want to see all the messages you have posted, search on your name. For any of our new members, the archives is also a good way to "catch up" on any messages previously posted about the subject of your search. You can search for names that you personally are researching. Rootsweb asks that we not send "test" messages to their lists. If, after checking the archives, you believe that your message has been lost, please repost it the next day, or if it is the same day, send a follow-up message asking if anyone needs to have it repeated. You can "test" reception by sending an actual query and seeing if it appears. <grin> It's been a rather confusing week but hopefully all is now back to normal. By the way, during the breakdown, the techs also installed some spiffy upgrades that should make messages flow even more quickly than before. We owe a big thanks to Rootweb for our opportunity to even have the list. If you would like to lend a hand by becoming a member or sponsor and helping to support the costs go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/ Hope this explanation helps with some of the confusion. 1. [COE-L] COE, John b. June 15, 1649, Gloucester, MA USA
    2. CARL R COE
    3. E. Whetsel, The John Coe of whom you inquired was born June 15, 1649, in Gloucester, MA, son of Matthew and Elizabeth (Wakley) Coe. Matthew Coe, as you are most likely aware, was an English immigrant to Portsmouth, NH, in 1640. John Coe went to Falmouth, ME, with his parents in 1661, and after the town was destroyed by Indians during King Philip's War in 1676, he located at Duxbury, MA. A surveyor and settler of boundries for the Plymouth Colony, he came down the Seconnet River to Little Compton, RI, about the time the town was settled. Upon arriving there he went to the home of William Pabodie, where he remained "until his work was done." Pabodie had married Elizabeth Alden, daughter of Plymouth Pilgrims John Alden and Priscilla Mullins of Mayflower fame and heroine of Longfellow's "The Courtship of Miles Standish." A large granite monument stands to the honor of Elizabeth Pabodie in Little Compton, the north side of which is inscribed with these words: "Elizabeth Pabodie, daughter of Plymouth Pilgrims, John Alden and Elizabeth Mullins. The first white woman born in New England" John Coe became acquainted with the Pabodie's daughter Sarah, born Aug. 7, 1656, died Aug. 27, 1740. He married her Nov. 10, 1681, at Duxbury, MA. They returned to Little Compton, RI, where John died Dec. 16, 1728. Their children were: 1. Lydia, b. Feb. 26, 1682; d. young. 2. Sarah, b. Feb. 25, 1685; d. young. 3. Lydia, b. 1688. 4. Sarah, b. 1690. 5. Samuel, b. Dec. 12, 1692. 6. Elizabeth, b. March 28, 1694. 7. Hannah, b. Dec. 29, 1696. 8. John, b. Feb. 1, 1699. 9. Joseph, b. March 24, 1700. I hope this is helpful. 2. CARL R COE
    3. Date: 9/16/98 6:16 PM RE: COE, Elizabeth b. 1812 Roane Co TN USA Mary, So nice to hear from you. I'll let others judge my expertise. I have been at this since 1979. Elizabeth Coe, as you know, was married May 27, 1829, in McMinn County, TN, to Moses Casey, b. 1810 in Roane County, TN, son of Ambler and Polly (Ellison) Casey. They are listed in the 1830 and 1840 censuses of McMinn County. Evidence suggests that she is the daughter of Stephen Coe of McMinn County, the only member of the Coe family to appear in East Tennessee in the early 1800s. On June 5, 1826, the court of McMinn County appropriated $40 for his maintenance. Prior to moving to McMinn County, he lived in Roane County, TN, where the county annually set aside $20 for his support. He obviously lived a life of limited means, and may have been disabled. You state that there was a seventeen-year age difference between Elizabeth and Martha Coe. How did you arrive at the age difference? Martha died in July 1846 in Newton County, AR, and I'm unaware of any document giving her date of birth. Based on her marriage of April 4, 1817, in Roane County, TN, to Jesse E. Casey, b. 1797, son of Jesse Casey, who was also the father of Ambler Casey, her birth would most likely have been around 1800. You may also be aware of Elizabeth and Martha Coe's sister Mary, b. 1802, who married Solomon Snow, b. 1798. She also died in Newton County, AR. I believe they had another sister Nancy Coe, who maried George Dugan and lived in McMinn County, TN. You are also likely aware of their brothers Wesley Allen Coe, b. 1809, who married Rebecca Ellison and lived in McMinn and Bradley Counties, TN, and Vincent Coe, b. about 1812, who lived in McMinn and Polk Counties, TN. You note that you found Elizabeth in the 1880 census of Newton County, AR. What age is given for her? As a descendant, you must be familiar with her children. Do you know their names and years of birth? Anything you could help with in this regard would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is helpful. Please don't hesititate to contact me if you feel I can be of further assistance. Carl Robert Coe

    2. Debby, Could you please send me your genealogy for this area one more time? I don't want to miss anything again as I am searching. I am glad that I found that marriage record. I actually came by it on accident. I had looked up marriages for COE in the Main Index that the Archives had and that marriage wasn't there. In one of the Volumes that I looked in I decided just to check the index for that book and found that marriage. I have sent a copy of the marriage record to Carl already so I'll have to go back and get another copy, probably next week on Tuesday. Glad I could help, Shelley

There are several Coe's listed in the book but I don't know if any of you have connections. Let me know if you think you do and I'll see if it's in the book. However, the book is not very well indexed and it does take some time to look them up. Thanks Robin Mullaney robinmullaney@snet.net

    1. [COE-L] COE, Daniel b. 1700 Sussex Co DE USA
    2. CARL R COE
    3. Date: 9/14/98 9:36 PM RE: COE, Daniel b. 1700 Sussex Co DE USA Ralph, It looks as though our families followed similar migration patterns. After leaving Worcester County, MD, my great great grandfather Rouce Coe moved to Ross County, OH, sometime before 1850. He may have been there as early as the mid-1840s. He purchased a 201-acre farm about five miles west of Waverly, March 28, 1855. Rouce's brother Benjamin Coe, who was born in 1812 in Worcester County and was later a shoemaker in Bourneville, in Southern Ross County, married Eliza McGinnis in Fayette County, May 19, 1839. Their great grandson, William Oliver Coe, ran four times for governor of Oklahoma. He lost the 1950 race by a mere 850 votes, the closest statewide election in the state's history; and in 1954 was defeated in a runoff election with Governor Raymond Gary, whose sister Mary Jane was married to Clarence C. Coe, born Aug. 28, 1920, at Madill, OK, son of Grover Cleveland and Maggie (Rogers) Coe of Grayson County, TX, and Madill, OK. After my great great grandmother's death, Benjamin Coe's widow Eliza and Rouce Coe were married, September 17, 1871, in Fayette County. She died November 10, 1899, and was buried at Roxabell Cemetery. From the chart you sent, I see that you were born at Roxabell. Rouce Coe, who was born in 1809 in Worcester County, MD, died January 8, 1894, in Pike County, OH, and was buried at Brown Cemetery, just south of Bourneville. My great grandparents William, born Dec. 5, 1836, at Baltimore, MD, and Sarah (Edwards) Coe are buried at the same cemetery. My grandfather James Franklin Coe, who was born February 24, 1882, in Pike County, moved here to Marysville from Chillicothe about 1915. Elizabeth Bethard has always been an interesting mystery. It is clear that she and Daniel Coe produced a child. On December 29, 1735, Daniel Coe was tried in Somerset County, MD, for carnal knowledge with her. The trial continued for some time and he was eventually found guilty and ordered to pay thirty pounds "whatsoever for every Reason of the birth maintenance Nourishing and Bringing up of the said Child . . ." On June 15, 1736, Elizabeth Bethard was put on trial for committing fornication with Daniel Coe "and did permit the same Daniel Coe then and to have carnal knowledge of her Body and to beget then and there a Bastard Child." She was fined thirty shillings and indentured to William Fassett. My great great grandfather Rouce Coe was later named for Fassett's son Rouce Fassett. As you know, on March 16, 1781, Daniel Coe Bethard was made an ensign under Captain Isaac Evans with a group of Revolutionary soldiers from Worcester County. The group included Daniel and Rebecca (Avery) Coe's sons Captain John Coe and Lieutenant Asa Coe. In 1848 John's grandson, General Levin H. Coe, was nominated for Vice President of the United States. Rouce Coe's father Benjamin was a son of Avery and Sarah Coe of "Coe's Addition," Bishopville, MD. Avery, who was born about 1746 in Worcester County, was a son of Daniel and Rebecca (Avery) Coe. This is where our families diverge. I hope this is helpful. Please let me know how I might be of further assistance. Carl Robert Coe

    2. Carl, Was able to go to the Archives today. Johnson County doesn't keep their records at the courthouse. It makes looking for the records so much easier. I had copied some marriage records, civil records, criminal records, and a will record. I was only able to scratch the surface of what is available there. One specific record that I think you will be particularly interested in is the marriage record of John W. COE and Freda GROS. The marriage license was actually applied for by John's sister Pearl. I thought that was kinda strange. The record says that John W. COE was of Ohio and that Freda was from Kansas City, I believe. I don't have the record right in front of me. I have to go back and pick them up because they are making copies. I just couldn't wait to tell ya! <G> I thought that they would be a married couple and not brother and sister. Thursday, I hope to go and actually view and copy the cemetery records that you were interested in, in the Lenexa Cemetery. I will send all these copies tonight when I go to work. Before I send them I'll send you some more e-mail to kind of let you know what to expect. It was fun! Shelley

    1. Re: [COE-L] COE, Stephen b. 1775 South Carolina USA
    2. Carl: Did not expect to find anything in SC on Stephen but was hoping to get a lead on his father. You know, like a Will that says something like: "To my son Stephen" (sure - in my dreams!). Do you know anything about a William Coe who petitioned for land as follows: 6 Nov. 1753: Read the petition of Wm Coe of Saludy who has resided in the province and has a wife for whom and himself has not yet been assigned land. Prays for 100 acres north side of Saludie. Petition dated 6 Nov. 1753. Approved Thanks for the rundown on the SC Coes. It will be most helpful as we continue our search for poor (literally) Stephen's ancestors. I do hope I can make it back to the library soon. Unimportant things keep distracting me -- like cooking, cleaning, yardwork and other lines I'm researching. I know everyone on the List appreciates you help. Right guys? Vonda Dihm
