I hope we can exchange information further. The Charles Wesley Pace I am tracking, my grandfather, was b. Nov. 5, 1873, Taylor Co., IA and moved to Delta area of CO. in the 1880's. His father was Richard Foster Pace, b. Nov. 16, 1849 in French Licks, IN. and d. May 1928 in Delta, CO. He m. Serepta Ann Adams in 1870 in Taylor Co., IA. His father was Daniel Rice Pace, son of Edward "Neddie" Pace and Elizabeth Potter (the first wife). As I see it, your Charles Wesley Pace would have been an uncle to mine(?) (Your Charles Wesley Pace was a half brother to my Daniel Rice Pace, I think). No, I have not been following the Taylor Co. IA genweb site. I will be sure to go there for the information you cited. I have never heard of a Bazil Pace, up to now. I do have some information on my grandfather's siblings. All of this information I have very recently obtained from several members of the PACE mailing list at rootsweb. I don't know much of anything about my father's siblings. My father was Hartsel Wesley Pace, b. July 28, 1900 in Crawford, CO. Will be glad to continue correspondence.

I also have come across your Charles Wesley in a variety of places but have not been able to plug him into his proper place in my Pace material. The Charles Wesley I am tracking is the son of Edward and Susannah Foster Pace. Edward is from VA and Susannah from VA and then TN. My info shows that Edward(1790-1874) had at least four children by his first wife Elizabeth Potter (1788-1820)-there is some debate re if she was the first wife- and thirteen by his second wife Susannah (1804-1863). 1m: John 1813 Cynthea 1814--1887-unclear,1or2ndm Lewis Wineinger Daniel Rice 1818-came to IA George 1819-died young 2m: Richard Foster 1821-1911-m Nancy Wininger William Alexander 1823-1889-m Sarah Hankins Elisha Center 1821-1863-m Elizabeth Rutherford-their four children raised by Charles Wesley, brother Rebecca 1825-1905-m David Hankins-went to CO Charles Wesley 1827-1908-m Elizabeth Farris-went to IA and then CO Feruby Caroline 1831-1860-m James Scarlett-in IA Mary Catherine 1834-1869-m Harlin Scarlett-in IA Lewis Clark 1835 Joseph Alexander 1837-died young Nancy Ann 1839- ? -m Samuel Scarlett-to CO Edward Milborn 1842-1864-m Sarah Scarlett Susannah Emeline 1844- ? -m Nathan Helmick Elizabeth Jane 1846-1928-m Simon Alkire-to CO Do you follow the info on the Taylor C. IA genweb site? There is a listing there of news articles posted by name. Jonathan Adams(I believe Sereptra's father) has five articles posted around his death in 1893 including one that says list of heirs. Also an article where Richard Pace of CO visits his B-I-L, R. T. Adams, dated 19Dec1895. In researching Paces I have found as many Richards as there are Charles W.s. Where does your Richard Foster fit in? There is a family of Paces in Page county headed by Bazil Pace. I have never been able to figure out that one either. Maybe Richard if part of that family? Will be very interested to hear.

Posted on: USGenWeb Delta County Biographies Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Co/DeltaBios/10011 Surname: STELL, BURRITT, SMITH, BOYLE, FROTHINGHAM, HUNSICKER, REED, MCCORMICK ------------------------- SMITH FAMILY Echo Margaret Smith was born in 1888 in Iowa as daughter of Lewis Edwin and Margaret Jane Boyle Smith. Her father had severe asthma and was advised to seek a more temperate climate. He was intending to move his family to California, but several of his friends and members of the same Presbyterian church had moved to the Surface Creek Valley at the encouragement of their former minister Rev. Frothingham who had come to the Surface Creek Valley to start a new church. Lewis decided to visit Colorado and then go on to California but the Colorado air and Surface Creek Valley suited him well and he decided to stay. Reverend Frothingham however failed to establish a successful church, and left Eckert; it was some few years before a flourishing Presbyterian Church was finally established under Reverend Hunsicker. Prominent among its early members were Lewis Edwin Smith and John Allen Brower. Lewis became a popular member of the Surface Creek Valley society, serving as deputy water commissioner for several years and being active in the Presbyterian church and lodges which the Browers and Burritts also attended. Lewis and Margaret had three daughters; Echo Margaret b. 1888 m. Frank Reed Burritt 1923 d. 1969 in Cortez; Edna b. 1889 m. Dewitt McCormick 1913 d. 1950? in Seattle; and Ethel b. 1891 m. George? Mathis d. 1940 ? in Seattle Echo Margaret Smith was about 18 when her family moved to Surface Creek Valley. She took employment in Delta as a switchboard operator. In time she became acquainted with Frank Reed Burritt while he was still in high school. Echo, however, wanted a career, and worked hard to become head operator, then started her own switchboard office in Cederedge with sister Edna, and finally took over the switchboard in Eckert which was housed in the same building as the post office. Echo began filling in on postal duties and eventually was appointed post mistress. For several years she worked from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. or later, delivering mail by horseback throughout the Surface Creek region, supervising the switchboard operators, and often filling in a shift or two, and running the post office. She was also an active member of the Eckert Presbyterian Church and Odd Fellows and Rebeccas Lodge. Her frequent companion was Frank Reed Burritt, fellow church and Lodge member, veteran of W.W.I during which he served as an army nurse in France under General Pershing. In 1923 both he and Echo became delegates to the Grand Lodge Convention in Gunnison. Much was made of their sneaking around together, during the trip to, and stay in, Gunnison, and so on a whim, Echo and Frank got married, on the way home in Montrose. She then had to retire from the post office, as married women could not hold such a post, and she became a ranch wife. At first she and Frank had a spread up on Redlands Mesa near his brother John, but that failed in the early years of the Depression and he and Echo moved onto Keystone farm on Tongue Creek in the Surface Creek Valley. They were soon joined by Hiram Burritt and family, he having lost his job at a Creamery in Montrose. Frank, Hiram, their father Fred Ray, and aided by cousins George, Walter, and Jim Stell ran Keystone Farm successfully throughout the remainder of the Depression. After Fred Ray died in 1940 and Hiram left after the tragic death of his beloved Edith from a tick bite in 1941, and the Stells all eventually moved away, Frank was left alone to run Keystone Farm. This proved too overwhelming a task, and by 1948 it was abandoned, its fields leased out, and its 160 acres sold in 1951 as pastureland. The original Burritt homestead and its many out buildings have all fallen into ruin and little evidence of Keystone Farm exists today. It was just behind the old Tongue Creek School, now a private dwelling. Frank and Echo moved in with her mother in Eckert, and lived there for many years after her death in 1955. Failing health led to their selling the Eckert home in 1968, and moving to Cortez in Montezuma County, where their daughter, my mother, cared for them until their deaths in 1969 (Echo) and 1982 (Frank)

His parents were John and Catherine Fletcher Brower of New Brunswick. John Brower Sr.'s parents appear to have been Jacob and Agnes Allen Brower. His great grandfather John Allen was an active promoter of the Loyalist cause throughtout Northern New Jersey and Southern New York. Frank Reed Burritt was the son of Fred Ray and Isabelle Louisa Brower Burritt. Fred Ray Burritt arrived to the Surface Creek Valley in Delta County about 1886 at about age 24 as a cowhand for his 38 year old brother Reed Burritt who had started the Doughspoon ranch about 1885. Doughspoon ranch was near the ranch of John Allen Brower who had settled in the valley in 1883. John Allen had a daughter Belle who was about 15 when Fred Ray Burritt was dragged into the Brower's kitchen, half drowned from falling into the Gunnison River while attempting to run Reed Burritt's cows across the river to his new ranch. Fred Ray was stripped of his wet clothes and placed by the stove to warm up and dry off. In walked Belle, who legend says, took one look at the naked cowboy, and decided then and there that was the man she was going to marry. On 12/5/1888 she snagged her cowboy and they started a ranch up the Valley, which in time would become known as "Keystone farm." Doughspoon ranch was quickly abandoned for lack of water and the site is now a wasteland half buried by the dobies. Reed Burritt and his wife Anna Kimball, and their children removed to Glenwood Springs, and then Denver, and eventually California. Reed went on to have many adventures throughout his life and his letters to a friend in Delta were printed in the Delta County Independent and convey many of these adventures, There is also on file a pamphlet written by Harold Burritt, Reed and Anna's son or grandson, telling of Reed's adventures in Lake City in Gunnison County in the late 1870s to early 1880s, and the history of Doughspoon ranch. It is a wonderful document and is on file in the Delta County Historical Society. Reed was a consummate adventurer. He had come to Colorado, from Chicago, in search of silver, but soon learned he could do better as a butcher supplying miners with beef than as a prospector. He had learned the butchering trade from his father Hiram, who was a butcher among his other many hats from dairy farmer, to lawyer, to local politician. Reed, however, never lost his fever for gold or silver. He traveled extensively throughout South America in search of wealth and went to Alaska during the 1898 gold rush. I believe he died in California in 1934. Fred Ray and Belle Brower Burritt had ten children, but only seven survived to adulthood: Julia b. 1889 died a few days after birth; Hiram Ray b. 1891 married 1st Edith Burkholder 2nd Myrtle Smith, died 1953 in Delta; Frank Reed b. 1893, m. Echo Margaret Smith 1923, d. 1982 in Cortez; John Leslie b. 1896, m. Margaret Iona McPherson 1923, d. 1992 in Hotchkiss and whose three sons, one daughter, and two grandsons live on Red Mesa above Eckert; Flora Isabelle b. 1898, m. Ray Miller 1919, d. about 1950; Harold Brower b. 1901 d. 1912? when accidentally run over by a hay wagon; Alfred Artemus b. 1903 d. 1920 in the flu epidemic shortly after his mother and grandmother; Charles Reed b. 1905, m. Nellie Brook Nichols 1947, d. 1999 in Klamath Falls, Oregon and who was a career Army officer stationed in Alaska during W.W. 2 when he met Nellie and fell in love and after the war retired from the service, and then traveled and partied extensively with his vivacious wife throughout the world and both of whom sadly burned out and spent their last years in utter senility, but who for some 30 plus years brought a great light of laughter and joy to whomever they met; Rosalie Marie b. 1909 m. Vern Henry d. about 1960 ? in Spokane, WA; Lucile Irene b. 1914 m. Kenneth Euston, and presently living in Enumclaw,Washington Frank Reed and Echo Margaret Smith Burritt had but one child Margaret Lucile b. 1927 m. Ralph Orville Bryan 1948, d. 1998 in Cortez. Margaret Lucile Burritt and Ralph Orville Bryan had four children: Larry Gene b. 1948; Sharon Louise b. 1949; Frank Nickolas b. 1951; and Leslie Earl b. 1952
Posted on: USGenWeb Delta County Biographies Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Co/DeltaBios/10008 Surname: STELL, BROWER, WISHART ------------------------- James W. Stell married Amanda Catherine Brower 12/1/1883 daughter of John Allen Brower and sister of George Brower and half sister of Adam Wishart. Article from the Colorado Families; James [Stell], oldest of five children, was the only one to migrate to Colorado. His parents moved to Chicago, where for a time he worked in his father's plumbing shop. He left home at an early age and went to Kansas. He was employed as a buffalo hunter in Texas by Hi Bikerdyke. Then to Colorado in 1876 where he prospected, worked in the mines and hauled freight from Canon City to Leadville. After a short time he moved westward, traveling on horse back, leading a pack house, via Tin Cup Pass, Taylor Park and Schofield Pass to the Gunnison River Valley near Delta. As soon as lands in the area were opened to white settlement he filed a homestead claim at the confluence of Surface and Tongue Creeks, on the southern slopes of Grand Mesa. This claim was later relinquished and a second filing was made on Surface Creek Mesa between the towns of Eckert and Austin. In 1890 James and his father-in-law John Brower built a two-story log house on this homestead and the family has lived there for over 80 years. James worked part time as a plumber to supplement his income from farming. He was instrumental in forming the Surface Creek Ditch and Reservoir Company and responsible for the construction of several storage reservoirs on Grand Mesa one of which bears his name. He was organizer of the Surface Creek Fruit Growers Association, a cooperative marketing venture. James and Amanda were Protestants and he was affiliated with the Masonic and IOOF fraternal organizations.

Paonia did indeed have a railroad in the early 1900's. Denver & Rio Grande had passenger service through Delta, Hotchkiss, Paonia, and Somerset. In about the 1940's the railroad traffic faded to the point where passenger service was discontinued and is now just a coal transport. Anyone living in Delta county could have been living in Paonia. Although they had service to Somerset just east of Paonia, somerset by way is in Gunnison County, Somerset was a mining owned town and there would have been no housing available for railroad people. I posted this on Co/Delta rather than reply direct in case this information is of interest to someone else researching. I believe he was born in Paonia but I'm not certain. They were long time residents in Coquille Oregon and returned to Paonia upon his retirement. Uncle Merle died September 11, 1997. They had 3 children, Dale,Thelma, and Lola.
I am interested in a brief history of Paonia. I have a picture postcard addressed to my great grandmother, Miss Lillie May BEALS in Paonia. She was in MO in 1904 and married by Feb 1907. Very curious what she was doing in Paonia. Was the railroad going through Paonia during time period? At this point I don't know if her father, Charles E. Tanner worked for the railroad, but it seems like a plausible explanation. branches@widomaker.com http://www.widomaker.com/~branches/
