Marsh, Delta County Pioneer, Dies Tuesday One of Delta county's oldest pioneers, John Jefferson MARSH, expired Tuesday at the Delta Convalescent home after about a year's illness. He was 86 years old on his birthday, last January. Mr. Marsh came to Delta County in 1883 from his birthplace in Osage County, Mo., and homesteaded a place two miles south of Delta in 1889. In the early days, when the vicinity was sparsely populated, he was acquainted with nearly everyone in towns of Grand Junction, Delta, Olathe, Montrose, Ouray, Telluride and Silverton. At one time he peddled produce in the mountain towns with a wagon and a team. Mr. MARSH was engaged in farming nearly all of his life, and in 1909 took up a desert claim in Montrose county. For the last 10 years he was a resident in the Pea Green community. His marriage to Hattie Elizabeth KILLEN took place in Delta on Dec. 24, 1885. His wife survives and also their six children: Luella Virginia GREEN of Olathe, Margaret Isabella SUMMER [sic] of Olathe, Jennie Elizabeth SUMMER [sic] of Delta, Annie May SCARLETT of Delta, Joseph Franklin MARSH of Compton, California, and Henry Seay MARSH of McBride, B.C. Canada. There are also one brother and one sister, and 16 grandchildren. Mr. Marsh was a member of the Modern Woodman, the Good Templars Lodge, and for several years was president of literary and debating societies in Delta and Montrose counties. Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Lamar Funeral Home and will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Delta. >From a newspaper clipping.
