My mother (Mary) was one of the 7 surviving children that resulted from the marriage between Ben and Frieda. Growing up my parents lived in Ft Garland and I often stayed or visited at my grandparents home where I was treated to many stories of life in the 'Valley' as well as some of the history relating to Henry Meder. I see from the posts here that Henry is referred to as John. The name 'John' was a nickname shortened from "Johnny Reb". My mother had a fondness for Henry and related to him given both my mother's joy of hunting and fishing as well as Henry's love of the outdoors and his vocation of teamster and hunter for the Cavalry.
