By 1927, Marina was living back in Questa, NM living with Jose Gabino Sanchez from whom Marina had four children starting in 1932 with Rudolfo (Rudy) Sanchez. At Questa, NM, Marina on June 5, 1927, gave my mother, at age 4, to Felix and Eloisa Sanchez who raised my mother. I have in my possession a document written in Spanish signed by Marina Gold on June 5, 1927 at Questa, NM. According to information given by Marina to my Mother, Marina gave her away because Jose Gabino Sanchez was extremely abusing to my mother. This could have been because my mother was the youngest child and it was easier to abuse her than the older children who in 1927 were Freddy about 11, Frieda about 10 and Celestino (Tino) about 7. According to my mother, Jose Gabino Sanchez was a Gambler who was not a good provider. Marina appears in the 1920 La Lama, NM Census (Lama is between Questa and Taos) age 23 (this would make her born in 1897 when she was actually born in 1894 making her age 26 in the 1920 Census), with her Juan J. Duran, 24, and children, "Federico", (Freddy) age 4 (1916), and Ofelia, (went by name Frieda), age 2 (1918). The family must have moved to Wyoming between 1920 and May, 1923 as my mother was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming on 5/24/1923 and Baptized on May 24, 1923 at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Rock Springs. Her Certificate of Baptism issued on February 28, 1945 shows her name as Lucia Elvira Duran, child of John Duran and Marina Gold with sponsors (Padrinos) John Duran and Fedelina Duran (unknown who they are.) My mother maintained contact with her mother and step siblings. She also visited her Aunt Isabel and Rosa. My mother's father was Jose Adolfo Gonzales. 8 Aug 1891 Costilla Bapt. entry lists him as "hijo natural de Maria Gonzalez " with Padrinos Garcedan Rael and Antonia Cordova. Jose Adolfo was a World War I Veteran. He also ran for Taos County Sheriff. He personally told my grandfather, Felix Sanchez, that he was my mother's father. His immediate family claims they had no knowledge of fathering my mother. However, his relatives, such as Charlie Gonzales, Horacio Gonzales, Ofelia Gonzales Martinez, Rosa Cisneros Rael, and others have confirmed this. He also told my mother that he was her father and my mother asked her mother and she admitted he was her father. According to my mother, her mother, Marina Gold, told her that her current husband or common law husband (no record of a marriage has been located), Juan Duran, had left her, and Adolfo was working at a store and promised to give her credit to buy food at a time when there was no financial assistance to feed her four young children. In US 1920 Questa Census, age 27, with Occupation, "Salesman in the "General Store " wife, Fidelia M. ,26, and dau., "Eliria", age ?. In 1920 Questa Census, he appears as "a salesman at a General Store", along with his wife, Fidelia, 26, and Eliria, 5, their first child. He was also rumored to be Josefina Wisehart's father. This information was also related to me by Mrs. Modesto Gonzales, (Modesto Gonzales was legitimate son of Adolfo Gonzales). Apparently, he never acknowledged Josefina as well as my mother. It is my belief that his Adolfo's wife, Fidelia Martinez and their first child, Eliria, were aware of this. This has been confirmed by Elisea Wisehart Gonzales, Josefina's younger sister. Adolfo and his wife, Maria Fidelia Martinez are marriage Padrinos at Costilla for Desiderio Olguin from Kelsey, Colorado and Maria Isais Montoya from Questa. The bride has not been identified.
