ABT 1663 in La Rochelle, Kingdom of France d. ABT 1712 in Bernalillo, New Mexico father: Grolet, Yvon (? - <1699) mother: Odoin, Marie (? - <1699) Baptized Jacques Grolet at the Church of St. Jean, La Rochelle, Kingdom of France. He came to the New World as a member of the La Salle Expedition of 1685-1687, with two friends (Pedro Meusnier and Juan L'Archiveque). He was "lost" for five years among the savage Indians, then sent to Spain by order of the Viceroy, the Conde de Galve. After returning to New Spain, he came up to New Mexico with the Captain Cristoval de Velasco/Fray Francisco Farfan expedition to reconquer the Kingdom of New Mexico from the rebellious Indians, arriving in Santa Fe on 23 Jun 1694. The three Frenchmen had been imprisoned in Cadiz, Spain, until their release in 1692. The conditions of their release required that they become Spanish citizens and return to Nueva España. At Mexico City, these Frenchmen either requested, or were ordered, by the Viceroy to accompany the colonizing expedition bound for New Mexico. The French name, Grole or Grolet, soon evolved into Gurulé, and this was further Hispanicized by 19th century Padres into Guruled; the spelling went back midway to the present Gurulé. Groom left France in company of the General Marshall de la Salle in search of continental region bordering on New France; was captive of infidel Indians for 5 years; then went to Spain by order of Viceroy Conde de Galve; back in Mexico City, he then came to New Mexico as a settler. You are right about the use of the middle names. The first name being the baptismal, saints name such as Jose or Maria. The "Luhan" children may also be spelled Lujan. Many times, spellings vary in translation or just misspellings. You will find that the Cordova line is well documented online. It is probable that you will find your wife's family.

I have traced one branch back to Victorio Cordova and Carolina Subia. They are listed on the 1880 Census with two adopted "Luhan" children, Guadaloup and Rafina. They eventually had seven children of their own, one named Bitervo(my wife's grandfather). Victorio is 20 in 1880. He states his birthplace as New Mexico. I can find no trace of him prior to 1880. I saw the 1860 census. There is an entry for Jose Valentin Cordova with a one year old son named Juan Bt? Cordova. I see in your family tree that you show the middle name as Bautista. Is it possible that the entry is Bto, an abbreviation for Bitervo? My thought is that with all the Juans around Victorio decided to use his middle name as his first. Regards. 1. McClures

    3. I have been seeking information on McClures in Costilla and Conejos Counties for about 7 months. My great grandfather, Abraham Lincoln McClure and his wife, Mamie Olive Shinn McClure were in Fort Garland at the 1910 and 1920 censuses. A.L. was a general manager of a farm--a sod farm? Judging by the names on census records, this area was predominantly Hispanic. I am curious to know who A.L. worked for, if he spoke Spanish, where they worshipped (they weren't Catholic), and if Mamie voted in the first election after suffrage. I don't yet have any death/burial info on either of these. Their first grandchild, Mamie Evelyn McClure, died as an infant and is buried in Sanford Cemetery. (I have photo of her.) I suspect they are buried there as well since there are two unmarked McClure graves. Sure wish I could prove that and mark their graves. Other relatives were sprinkled around the county as well: A.L.'s nephew, Benjamin Harrison McClure, was in Monte Vista; Mamie's brother Stacy V. shinn was killed in an industrial accident in 1912 in Monte Vista. (I have copy of news article.) I would appreciate any suggestions as to where to look for info or shared knowledge about the McClures in Colorado. Thanks. Cheryl
