Each of these extensive gazeteer and immigrant guides contain the description of places and place names, many of which are no longer found on contemporary maps, including: cities, towns, villages, settlements, schools, post offices, transportation routes and schedules, and much more. Historical Guides and Gazetteer CD's may also include maps of the period providing cartographic reference to 19th century places identified and discussed in the literature. Also included are hundreds of advertisements by contributing businesses providing historical insight into the goods, services and the merchants that made them available during the 19th century. Anyone interested in the history of these regions will find this material useful. ------------------------------------------------------------ HISTORIC ATLAS SERIES (includes 19th century atlases of IA, IL, IN, KY, KS, MI, MN, NE, OH, PA, VA and WI) http://www.historic-atlas-series.com/has.html The Historic Atlas Series CD's are digital reproductions of 19th century maps and historical atlas data in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The Adobe Reader software is required to view, manipulate and print PDF data is included on each CD. States with maps and atlases currently available are shown in the graphic to the right. 19th century geographic and statistical data are useful to historians, genealogists and researchers with an interest in the landscape and cultural setting of this period. Early county maps may contain many places that no longer exist or that have been obscured over time. Atlases with statistical data provide vivid detail of 19th century pioneer lifestyles. Details on early maps are often difficult to read and these are no exception; however, by virtue of the Adobe PDF formatting, these documents may be inspected and printed at high levels of magnification without additional digital distortion; something that simply cannot be accomplished with paper reproductions and photocopies. There is a vast amount of information that can be gleaned from these sources and the diligent researcher will find these cartographic resources useful in their studies. ------------------------------------------------------------ Good luck with your research! Author: pfr1634 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.colorado.counties.costilla/510/mb.ashx Message Board Post: An ancestor of mine, Joseph Rock, took a civilian job at Fort Garland in November 1879 as a wagon maker, traveling from southeast Kansas. He died at Fort Garland 19 March 1880, and his body was shipped home for burial. I do not expect to find any specific information about Joseph and his death in Fort Garland, but I'm trying to find some general background information about Fort Garland and the San Luis Valley of that period, things like what was the main form of transportation (and by what route would he have taken from Kansas); what was the population (size and demographics) and general environment (both the physical environment and the general news of the day), etc. I've tried to find books on the subject, but haven't been able to find anything that is very informative of that historical period. I sent an email to the curator of the Fort Garland museum, but have not received a response. Short of visiting the area myself (something I'd like do some day, but cannot at present), could anyone offer some suggestions for source material? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I remember visiting relatives there as a child. My mother said there was a fire at the church and all the records of the family were destroyed going back. It may be a factor in finding past records. My Mothers name was Casilda (Casey) A. (Madrid) Corless I don't have current contact with most of my Mom's side of the family these days that would remember. Most of the Aunts and Uncles are now dead. I do have four living Aunts and Uncles that I don't have current contact with My other Aunts and Uncles that grew up in San Luis were, Aurelia, Ben, Ruben, Eva and Julian. Also remember some Madrid Cousins living in California and Wyoming that would have been related to my Grandfather as I was told they were second cousins. So if by some chance someone has more information about family history I'm open to learn. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you for posting it. I found it when I was researching the sisters of my Husband's great-grandmother, Maria Refugio Vigil, born in La Puebla, baptised in Santa Cruz de la Canada, New Mexico. Refugio had a sister, Maria Juliana, b. 17 Feb. 1832. I have not found any more info about her husband or children, but her sister, Maria Ramona Vigil married Jose Manuel Vigil in Taos, NM in 1830 and they had a daughter they named, Maria Juliana, b. 21 April 1858 in Conejos, Arroyo Hondo, NM. This Juliana does not match the one in your story, but it is close. "A tia of Juliana was Maria Guadalupe." Mine did too have a tia named Maria Guadalupe. But my Juliana's parents were Jose Santos and Maria de la luz Martin. The repetition of names is confusing, but can often led to a link. If interested, check out: Herman Charles Grace Family Tree.
