Agapito Vigil was the son of Critoval Faustin Vigil and Maria de la Luz Martin. , from Cristoval Faustin I go back three generations to Domingo. I have Agapito married twice, the first wife was Maria Dolores Abeyta on 23 Feb 1857 in Taos, and the second wife Francisca Mestas the daughter of Francisco Mestas and Rosa Romero. The first husband of Francisca Mestas was Juan Lamorie. Agapito and Francisca were married in Taos 8 May 1864. I do not have children for the couple. He was b. in Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic) in the village of Rusava in the Moravia area. His father was Jiri (George) KUZEL and his mother was Anny BUTEK. He was 54 or 55 years old when he died (one source says suicide) in Blanca. He is not listed in the SSDI. The State could/would not search for a death certificate without an exact date of death. Chavez were very early settlers here, especially descendants of Juan Nepomuceno Duran y Chavez and Maria Clara Sanchez. Clara was the daughter of Pascuala de la Luz Montes Vigil. The couple had at least nine children that I know of and most migrated to San Luis de la Culebra from Taos during the early days of the founding of the area. Later they migrated to Plaza de Los Chaves, which no longer exists, near Gardner. Only a few families stayed here.

In 1880, Juan A. Chaves was 21 years old (born 1858-1859 in Colorado). Both of his parents were born in New Mexico. His wife, Candelaria, was 19 years old (born 1860-61 in Colorado). Her parents were also born in New Mexico. They have one child at this time, Gaspar Chavez, who is my wife's great grandfather. The 1920 census for the town of Saguache, Saguache County, Colorado shows Juan A. and Candelaria Chavez (ages now 60 and 59). Their son, Gaspar Chavez, is now married to Josefa DeHerrera. Their children are: Elias (age 21), Alonzo (17), Juan Andres (13), Fidela (8) (my wife's grandmother), and Felice (6). Near the Gaspar Chavez family are Moses DeHerrera (brother-in-law), Donaciano Chavez, possible brother of the older Juan A. (Andres?) Chavez (and uncle of Gaspar), and Donaciano Maes (78), Father-in-law to Moses DeHerrera. Any help locating parents of Juan A. and Candelaria Chavez would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance! Her name was MARIA de la paz VIGIL married to IGNACIO DURAN aproximate time of birth, 1850's. Her parents were FRANCISCA MESTAS AND AGAPITO VIGIL. I have three books and am working on a third and fourth on Vigil's. The first is revised edition of Some Descendants of Francisco Montes Vigil, Siero, Spain to La Culebra", the second is Some Descendants of Domingo Montes Vigil, and the third is Some Descendants of Juan Montes Vigil. I have a 32,000 name database and have been researching area families for about 12 years. I am also working on the Descendants of Manuel Gonzales Vallejo, your Vigil family is in that one also. The Vigil books are $55 including postage, the Vallejos book is $65 plus postage. Most founding families in "La Culebra" descend from these three men.

I have the above family of Vigil's in my book Descendants of Domingo Montes Vigil. While i have Manuela Vigil as a child in the family group of Juan Miguel Vigil and Maria Rosa Vargas, i do not have her marriage or her descendants. the info i have is that she was born about 1853 because i found her in the 1860 census in the precinct of culebra, now costilla county, co. i think her sister simona married a dr. kugler or some such person? teresa de jesus married a coirot. the only child i have descendants for is Eduvigen Vigil who married Isabel Gallegos, and he only had one child who survived to adulthood.

MEYER in Feb 1868, place unknown. Her parents were Jaun Miguel VIGIL and Maria Rosita VARGAS. Jaun Miguel VIGIL born about 1825 in Ranchos de Taos Co., NM Maria VARGAS born about 1829 in Ranchos de Taos Co.,NM. Jaun Cristoval VIGIL and Maria Antonia TORRES parents of Jaun Miguel. Antonio TORRES and Nicolasa SANDOVAL parents of Maria TORRES. All were from Taos area of New Mexico. This information is research done by someone else and I have no documentation. I do have the death certificate for Maria VIGIL MEYER (died 25 Feb 1937 in Santa Barbara, California and buried in Old Mission Cemetery in Santa Barbara, California) MEYER came from Hannover, Germany. His parents were F.W. MEYER and Christina LINDNER. William's brother is C.F. MEYER who also lived in Costilla/Alamosa, CO and was the city clerk there. I have other biographical information on William MEYER but no further information on ancestry. Also have descendancy information for William and Maria (Mary)MEYER who were my g-g-grandparents. Does any of the VIGIL information match with your research? I am especially interested in documenting and either proving or disproving the information I have received from others.
