I have a grandfather born in 1894 who's name is Jose E. Maestas, who was married to Adelia not sure of her last name. His fathers names was Jose I. Maestas and his wife was Mela Maestas. Of what my grandfather death certificate say is that her last name was Trujillo. I am interested in finding information on them also and this is my first time looking. I have read some of your messages. I remember my father telling me that my grandfather was a farmer/sheephearder and spent lot's of time in CO. Also he had some family that he called Uncle Thomas that I think he lived in the Denver area. We have very few Maestas left in NM that we know. My father had a brother who died at a very young age and also a sister that passed way in her teens. After them there was another sister and then my father who was the youngest who's name is Joe Maestas.

    2. Can't help you a whole lot, but just by coincidence I picked up the San LUis Valley *GenealogicaL sOCIETY journal. Vol. 7, number ? of 1991 in a used book store and I was reading it yesterday and found the following.: Situated at the top of the hill overlooking Fort Garland is a fenced cemetery with six graves, five of them marked. It continues to list the Brennaman burials then states "On the morning of May 22, Ted's wife Eva and her sister Ruth Judd (who was holding a baby) were seated in the house and Ted came in with a gun and told them he was going to kill them. He shot Ruth first and when Eva ran out, he shot her. He than ran to his father's house where he threw the gun (which had jammed) down. He than ran to his uncle's house (Charles Robinson). Mrs. Robinson saw the blood on his face and said, "Ted, you've been hurt. Let me fix you up". He said, "No, they're after me" and ran out. As he ran toward his mother's house, a man by the name of Vasquez dropped to his knee, took a shot and killed him. There is more if you want me to make a copy and mil to you let me know at mariam@vanion.com

    2. Michael Rose
    3. Posted on: Costilla County, Co Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Co/Costilla/10084 Surname: Beckwith ------------------------- Hello! My name is Michael Rose. I am attempting to locate information about and relatives of my Grandfather, Gerald Beckwith, born sometime before World War 1, in Blanca. This is what I know. His nickname was Gerry. He and a brother (whose name I do not know) owned a silver mine within the town. He had at least two and possibly three wives, at different times of his life. Marion, my Grandmother, was from Minnesota. They had one child, my Mother, Patricia Dorothy Beckwith. It is said he later married a much younger woman whose name was possibly Frankie or Franky. They had at least one daughter together. This offspring would be somewhere between 60 and 75 years of age, at this time. The mine apparently petered out in the 1920’s or 1930’s. The Beckwiths may then have migrated to the Springs area. I would appreciate any help you can give me in locating relatives and their location. If you know someone in Blanca who is on the Net and a longtime resident, this information would also be very useful. Many thanks!

    3. Posted on: Costilla County, Co Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Co/Costilla/10083 Surname: Cordova, Espinoza, Benavidez, Sandoval ------------------------- Although your query is asking for the origins of the surname HILERIO and my ancestor's name is a given name of Jose Hilario (spelling?) CORDOVA, it may have some relevance after all. I have learned that everything counts when it comes to investigating and unearthing facts about our ancestors. My grandfather, Jose Hilario Cordova was born in Walsenburg in Huerfano County, Colorado. His family came from Costilla County. The name Hilario is unique to me. I am wondering what the English translation of the name would be and if it references something that you can use as an identifier to a location or job or something of that nature. It may even be a clue to something that I overlooked in my own search. Thanks for asking. Good luck in your own search!

    3. Posted on: Costilla County, Co Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Co/Costilla/10080 Surname: Hilerio ------------------------- I think you confused a given name with a surname. I noticed that person posted something on Hilerio Cordova. I really doubt that there are any families with the surname Hilerio in Walsenburg, CO, but who knows? I certainly am not familiar with the surname. Good luck with your search. The LDS Family History Centers in your area are a good start if you are just beginning your research. They can order microfilm from anywhere in the world. If your family was Catholic in Puerto Rico chances are that your family history is available for a little investment in time.
