1. [COCK] Some early Baptists I've found
2. SOME BAPTISTS IN VA &NC - SOME OF WHOM MIGRATED FROM PA & DEPreface: The Finnish Cockswere members of Old Swedes Church in New Castle, DEEzekiel Harlan’s father-in-law,Richard Buffington, owned land with William Vestal of Brandywine, Chester, PA William Vestal m. Quaker AliceBrunsden, widow of John Sr, and she became a Baptist in 1697 w/RichardBuffington, both former QuakersRichard Buffington was amember of Brandywine Baptist Church in 1697 along with Rev David Thomas andAlice Brunsden Vestal, her daughter Hannah and Judith Calvert the sister-in-lawof Val. Hollingsworth of New CastleAnn Calvert was also anearly Baptist with Buffington - Alice had a son JohnBrunsden born c1681 – he also used the name Branson – he was at Brandywineuntil at least 1707Silas Pryor was an Indiantrader and interpreter with Ezekiel Harlan whose father George lived very nearAlice and Wm Vestal on Naaman;s Creek at BrandywineSilas Pryor m. a daughterof Samuel Hall of New Castle and Old Swedes Church.- he knew the Finn CocksSilas Pryor bought land inNew Castle from Peter Hall, Samuel’s brotherA possible relative ofthese Halls (Rebecca) married Valentine Bratson 1747 at Old Swedes Church NewCastle; Jared Branson married into the Cock (a Finn)-Goad family and named ason ValentineWilliam Vestal’s son Johnran a ferry across the Potomac into VA at a gap in the Blue Ridge – Vestal’sGap, starting approximately 1736 – it was on an old Indian trail runningthrough Loudoun to Winchester, FrederickSilas Pryor and RichardBuffington had desc in Loudoun, VA – possibly also Samuel HallWilliam Vestal went to Loudounand then Frederick, VA by 1734 A Deborah Brunson ofChester, PA went to Loudoun, VA – could be a desc of Alice BrunsdenDeborah Brunson was aQuaker and married John Pyatt who was taxed in Loudoun, VAThe Pyatt’s son wasmarried at Old Swedes Church, New Castle, DEA John Brunston was taxedin Frederick, VA 1759 – could be related to DeborahA John Branson was taxedin Loudoun, VA 1768-1774 – he was assoc with Broad Run Baptist Church where RevDavid Thomas preached. David may be relatedto Baptist Rev Owen Thomas who was bequeathed land in 1748 by RichardBuffington for the Baptist church. Therewas a younger Owen Thomas in Loudoun when David Thomas was there.John Branson of Loudounwas listed near James Branson in 1760sThomas Dodson Jr was a foundingmember of Broad Run Church near Loudoun. In 1766 he was dismissed to Halifax/Pittsylvania to establish a newchurch – Birch Creek Baptist Church. Hisfirst cousin John married Elizabeth GOAD b. 1705. In the early 1780s Thomas Dodson Jr was taxedin Pittsylvania as was James Branson from Loudoun.A David Thomas andOnan/Owen Thomas attended the Quaker marriage of Hannah McKay at Hopewell MM 1734A John Branson signed atleast 3 religious petitions in VA in the 1770s – different counties – also GreenwoodA John Branson was aBaptist minister in Essex, VA in 1770s-80s - served with Rev. James GreenwoodFour Greenwoods were taxedin Loudoun, VA when John Branson was thereA John Branson b. c1734died in Essex, VA 1792 – father of LarkinA John Branson bought landgiven to his presumed son John located in Surry>Stokes, NC in 1771 – Rev DavidThomas moved next to this land and nearby was Anthony Hampton of Loudoun whoseson John had been a messenger for Broad Run Baptist Church.Baptist Rev WilliamFristoe ordained Rev. David Thomas. Fristoe was pastor at Occaquan Baptist Church in Stafford, VA. The Fristoes were alliedwith a Quaker Branson descendant who became a Baptist. Her Branson family was well acquainted withthe McKays and Jobes. This Fristoefamily came from N Farnham Parish, Richmond, VA where the Goads and Dodsonswere from – they were all mentioned in Richmond County records in 1707-1724. The Fristoes were probably instrumental ingetting the Dodsons to join the Baptist church. It is not known if any Goads/Goodes joined. However, after some of the Loudoun/Fauquier Baptistfolks went to the Townfolk settlement in Surry/Stokes, NC a prominent person intheir community was Major Richard Goode (Goad). Also found in records ofTownfork (near the location of an early Baptist Church called Forks Church) wasthe son of Baptist Rev. John Alderson from N Farnham Parish, Richmond, VA. His son Benedict Alderson lived near JohnBranson in Townfork. I think many ofthese folks from Loudoun/Fauquier went to Surry/Stokes to establish newchurches in NC. Rev. Alderson helpedestablish Linville - Smiths Creek Baptist Church in Augusta, VA. This was near the land of Valentine Sevierand his brother-in-law Johnnis/John Cock. There are likely similarstories for those who joined other churchs. We often wonder how some of our ancestors met each other, being fromdifferent areas. The spreading of thechurches is an important clue. Sandy

1. [COCK] Re: Robinson / Cock / Branson
2. Sandy- Are the records of the Old Swedes Church online somewhere? Is it a book you have? My John Cox and the man I believe to be his father (also John Cox, probably b. about 1720) are connected to the Wallen and Blevins families. I would like to search these records for names who could be connected to my Coxes. 1. [COCK] Cock / Goad
2. Johannis/John Cock who m.Elizabeth Goad was likely a son of Anders/Andrew Cock of New Castle, DE. Johannis was closely linked to Jared Bransonin Montgomery/Patrick/Carroll, VA. I found some documentsshowing that Justa Cock (likely uncle of Johannis “John” Cock-m. Goad) andEricus Anderson were acquainted with Quaker John Richardson who attended aFriends meeting in New Castle, DE near White Clay Creek where Anders ownedland. He was likely also acquainted withQuaker Valentine Hollingsworth who also attended that meeting. His grandson Abraham Hollingsworth was a memberof Hopewell MM in Frederick, VA with Thomas and John Day Branson. So here we see New Castle friendships withthe Cocks and people who knew a Branson family in VA. This Hollingsworth familywas allied with the Robinsons of New Castle, some of whom also moved toFrederick, VA. In VA the Robinsons wereallied with the Quaker McKay family who knew the Bransons. The McKays were allied with the Jobes one ofwhom married John Cock with DNA connections to Johannis Cock (m Goad). A lot of familiar folkslived in New Castle near the PA border along the following creeks: Brandywine,Christianna, White Clay, Red Clay, Mill and Naaman’s. Neighbors included Quakers, Swedes, Baptistsand others. A descendant of the QuakerBransons (Day Branson Jr-non Quaker) was married in Delaware. His probable sister, Frances Branson was alsomarried there. She likely died shortlyafterwards because her husband apparently married Elizabeth Tatnall a few yearslater, whose family was allied with the above-mentioned Quaker Richardsonfamily who knew Justa Cock. Day Branson Sr. marriedChristianna Anderson (b. ca1725). Herparents are unknown but she could be related to close neighbor of the Cocks,Ericus Anderson. If so, this means atleast one member of the VA Quaker Branson family was possibly allied with aclose friend of Anders and Justa Cock. Ericus Anderson’s daughterMary married Quaker Jonathan Kirk of New Castle. Jonathan’s brother William Kirk married MaryBuckingham. She was the daughter of JohnBrunsden (Branson?) of Brandywine near New Castle. Someof the Kirks went to Frederick, VA and later followed Thomas Branson Jr. to NC. This shows marriage links between peopleconnected to the Frederick, VA Bransons and a close friend and neighbor ofJohannis/John Cock’s family in New Castle. In New Castle Anders,Justa and Johannis/John Cock were surrounded by Quakers who were acquaintedwith the Bransons, Jobes and McKays. When Johanniswent to VA he settled near a Quaker meeting at Smith’s Creek where QuakerMartha Branson attended a wedding andwhose son-in-law was a member. Johannis livednext to a large tract of land owned by the father-in-law and brother-in-law ofThomas Branson Jr. Some of that land was inherited by Thomas Branson Jr. DNA close match toJohannis - John Cock b. 1762 married into a Quaker family in VA (theJobes). We still don’t know the father ofJohn Cock who m. Mary Leah Jobe, but we know it is likely that Johannis Cocklived near the Jobe plantation for a while. There were also mentions of an Andrew Cox and Charles Cox in Augustanear the Jobes around that time. Johannishad brothers named Charles and Andrew and cousins named Charles (if he was the son of Anders). Anders was the grandson of Anders The Finn and it has been determined that Johannis/John was likely of Finnish descent. If you find any errors in this post please let me know. I am a descendant of Johannis/John Cock through Andrew Branson. Sandy

The youngest, Rose, baptized in 1758, was buried in Brailes in January 1759. Son Thomas, born in 1744, was buried in Shipston in 1764. Son John, born in 1741, was married there in 1766; he was described as "of this parish"; one of the witnesses was Elizabeth Cockbill, presumably his 18-year-old sister. Both William & Rose were buried in Shipston in 1785 and 1779 respectively. Their son William, having married in Tysoe, lived in Shipston with his wife Mary; one of their children was named Rose. Hope this helps. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I note with interest that you mention Henry was a cousin of John Cock Jr. I have a brother (William) and a sister (Jenifer) for Henry, and their parents as Willam Cock and Cordelia Eddy. I was wondering if you would be willing to share any information you have on your side of the family. I would share my info also, if I have anything of interest to you. I have been away from Ancestry for a while, and your message (among other things), has renewed my curiosity and interest. Hanna was a granddaughter of Catherine Nicholls, Blanch's sister. Blanch's husband, Henry Cock was a cousin of John Cock Jr -- who was the father of my ancestor William Cock (b. 1802 in Madron). William and Hanna independently emigrated to Colombia, South America, where they got married after William became a widower (his first wife is my ancestor). Hanna had married Henry Pearce, who had also passed away in Colombia. I would be curious to know if you have any data pertaining to my ancestor William.
