According to "The Fighting Cochranes" by Alexander Cochrane page 305 Thomas Cochrane was aged thirty-six when he first laid eyes on Katherine "Kitty" Barnes who was age 16 and an orphan daughter of a Midland family and the ward of her cousin, the High Sheriff of Kent. Katherine Banres and Thomas were first married 8 August 1812 in the Queensbury Arms Hotel in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Witnesss to the marriage were Richard Carter, man-servant to Lord Cochrane and Anne Moxham, Kitty's lady's-maid. This one was a secret wedding. They were married a 2nd time 22 June, 1818 at Speldhurst Church, near Turnbridge Wells, England. This wedding was at the request of some of Katherine's relatives. At the request of Sir George Preston made a condition that they be married according to the rites of the Church of Scotland so he could bequeath to Lord Thomas, the old family estate of Culross, which his father, the 9th Earl had to part with. So again they were married 18 Oct 1825 in Edinburgh. Thomas before his death had a document prepared relating the story of the 3 times he and Katherine had to be married. Her full name is Katherine Frances Corbett Barnes. Father is Thomas Barnes and Frances Corbett.
