My moms maiden name is Cochran.....her family pronounces is Cohorn except for her brother...he went into the service and they told him it was pronaounced Cockrun. Mom said this is how all her family pronounced it. Moms family is from northwestern Kansas...I am interestd in getting family history from this family.....mom had done it for years and this family is hard to find...I am willing to share any information I have...Thanks Vickie
I, too have heard of the Cochran name being pronounced Co-Horn. When I married, my husband was from a town about 90 miles further west than my home town. There were Cochrans in business in that community. Although they spelled it Cochran, they pronounced it Co-Horn. It was rumored in the community that this pronunciation arose from some type of family feud that occurred many years earlier. This all happened in a tiny town in north central Kansas, so apparently this pronunciation is not a total aberration. I was glad to see that someone else had run across it. Good luck everyone with your research. If you are looking for Cochrans from that area whose names are pronounced in any of the various ways, perhaps I can help. [email protected] Searching for CHASE, COCHRAN, PALMER, PROSSER, MENDENHALL, CARPENTER, COWDEN, BARNETT, BEAVERS, BELL, CARTER, BALSLEY AND WILSON
In the 1860 Carroll Co TN census, my gggg gf, James Manesse Cochran, was almost never found. His name was spelled J.M. COHORN. Also, in this area of TN, (don't know about anywhere else) today, it is not uncommon to hear it pronounced, Cothran. As for the brogue/dialect, yes, you have to hear it to understand how it could be "misprounced" by today's standards. My maternal line involves the name Cutbirth. In 1750-1800 period, in the heavily Scottish/Irish populations, (not ScotchIrish, thats a mispronounciation also) the name was Cutbeard, or Cutbaird. Kim, My Alice and one of her brothers was born in Illinois. Her old brothers were born in Benton County Missouri and her younger siblings were born in Pettis County Missour. The only record of marriage I have for my Alice is to a Robert Tyson, they had 3 children Andrew, Norman and Donald.....My Alice's Father was Joseph Cochran. She did have an uncle named Samuel who had 7 children, 3 boys and 4 girls. the girls were Sarah Margaret and Sallie Cochran (twins), Cora Mae and Clara Ellen. I do not have a middle name for Sallie Cochran, and she seems to have left home early.......to where or with whom, I do not know. Sallie was born somewhere in Missouri (Probably Benton County) 11 Dec 1886. If any of this helps, please let me know. [email protected]

My son, who is quite knowledgeable about history and languages, told me that since our COCHRAN ancestors came from Scotland, they would have had a heavy brogue that rolled the letters in such a fashion that to those hearing the name, it sounded like CO-HORN. You about have to hear it pronouced that way to understand how it no doubt came about. Loretta Cochran-Morgan > >

I have found Obediah Cochran listed on the 1860 Lauderdale County Census with A. Cochran and his wife Harriet. The 1870 Lauderdale County Census shows Obediah as age 14 living with Harriet Cochran. Evidently A. Cochran died between 1860 and 1870. Is this of any help to you? Joyce > >

Do you know if William had any brothers that came over with him from Ireland? I am looking for the parents and family of John Thomas Cochran b. 1821 in Ohio. I'm wondering if he could be either the son of William or a nephew perhaps. Thanks, Amanda Cincinnati
Hi All, I am still searching for information about William Cochran, who settled in Monroe Co., Ohio, after coming to this country from Ireland. He was born abt 1805 in Ireland, and came here with 3 children, Anna br. 1828, Sarah br. 1832, and William [Jr]br. 1830. He came over when William was a boy and in 1838 had a son, James br. in Pa. to Lena Murdock. Lena was br. about 1818 in Pa., so she could not be the mother of the first three children. Lena died or they divorced, because William Sr. had 6 more children starting with John br. 1849, Mary Jane br. 1852, Levi br. 1854, Susan Ann br. 1858,Mahala Ann br. 1860 and Ruth br. 1865. We believe that these children were born to Edith Dunbar br. abt.1821. All of these were born in Monroe Co., Ohio. Our dates are mostly taken from Census, so they may be off a bit. If any one has any help, please email me. I can not find William and the first 3 children on any passenger list coming directly into the USA, so maybe they came thru Canada? I have searched every passanger list from the UK. to the USA and some to Canada, but can not find them. I hope someone knows something.
