Hello All, I apologize to anyone who gets more than one copy of this e-mail. I am considering the pros and cons of participating in this (quoted below) DNA study and am wondering if any other surnames related to my family tree are involved in a similar study? After all, if we "do it" for one family line and can use the same data/fees to research another family line then my husband's thrifty nature may be appeased <grin>. Following the two messages posted to the HOYT list you will find some questions I have sent to the coordinators. Please do let me know if any of the surnames receiving this message are also participating in a DNA study. THANK YOU. Terri Rene -------- Original Message -------- Announcing a HOYT GENEALOGY DNA PROJECT, Coordinator Dan Wharton, [email protected] or telephone 914-738-3722 home. This project will be examining some standard marker genes from the male Y chromosome inherited biologically from father to son, conveniently paralleling the tradition of passing surnames from father to son. This project is designed to answer two basic questions: (1) How closely related, if at all, are the various Hoyt lineages and Hoyt surname variations (Hoit, Hoyt, Haight, Hight etc.)? Do the descendants of John Hoyt and Simon Hoyt have matching Y genes, indicating a recent, common ancestor? (2) What is the ancient history of the Hoyt lineages in Europe and in the British Isles in particular? It is now possible to get fairly good readings from Y chromosome DNA as to male lineage origin from one of three main populations: Ancient resident Briton/Celtic, Anglo Saxon invader, or Norwegian Viking. We are hoping to get representation from many different Hoyt lines in the USA and Europe. The database will be an invaluable resource for Hoyt family researchers finding themselves at a "dead end" and looking for that missing link. Sample collection is accomplished privately at home with simple "cheek scrapers" and samples are sent to the lab through the mail. Results will be made available to all interested parties and identified only by pre-1900 ancestors and their geographical locations. Participant identities will be confidential (e-mail addresses shared only by mutual consent). Cost per participant is estimated to be less than $200, assuming that at least six Hoyts participate in the study. Note that all Hoyt males within your own, extended family would be expected to share the same Y genes so it is most economical to process just one sample from either yourself or one of your male Hoyt relatives and share costs among all interested family members. For more information and answers to any questions you have, please contact Dan Wharton and Marilyn Hoyt at [email protected] or call 914-738-3722 USA. We are looking forward to hearing from you. >Here is an update on the Hoyt DNA study. We now have participation from >Hoyts and Hites and are continuing to get inquiries. Surnames: Cochran, Sutherland, Hemphill, Ward, Gunn, Nichols Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/IMJ.2ACEB/1762.2 Message Board Post: I am looking for the parents, sibblings and descendants of George & Mary COCHRAN. If census records are correct, George W. Cochran was born between 1770 and 1780 in Virginia. (He also was described by his descendants as a "native of the Old Dominion, Virginia, and of German descent.") George married Mary Sutherland (her info is below) before 1799 (his age ~19/29), probably in Virginia. When their son was born in 1807 they were living in Berkeley Co. (formed in 1772 from Frederick County), West Virginia. (his age ~27/37) He reportedly served in the war of 1812-1815 (age about ~32/42), but we have located no records confirming this. When their daughter was born in 1812 they lived in Pickaway County, Ohio. He has been described as being one of the "pioneers" of Pickaway Co., OH. 1830 Census: Jackson, Pickaway County, Ohio. He probably died before 1840 as in the 1840 census his wife appears to be living with their son (younger George) in Fulton County, Illinois. Children: Sarah Cochran (2 Oct. 1799-8 Nov. 1865) married James Hemphill George Cochran (7 Aug. 1807-12 Apr. 1887) married first Hannah Ward and second Susan Gunn Nancy Cochran (10 Feb. 1812-20 Sept. 1896) married William Franklin Ward Nathan Cochran (abt 1815-) married Eliza Ann Nichols Others? Mary Sutherland's information: -Birth 20 Apr. 1782 in Virginia -Census 1840 in Fulton County, Illinois. She lived with her son George. (her age 58) -Census 17 Aug. 1850, Linn County, Iowa. She lived with her daughter Nancy (Mrs. William Ward), Mary was listed as 68 years old, Female, born in Virginia. -Death 15 Jun. 1856 in Linn County, Iowa (her age 74) -Burial in Lafayette Cemetery, Otter Creek Township, Linn Co., IA. On the grave stone is her son-in-law's name on the front (James Hemphill), one side his wife, her daughter (Sarah) and on the other Mary. I would appreciate any information about this family. Especially any census data, birth/death/burial records. I've never seen the 1830 census records, just found notes about them. George's age & place of birth are based on those notes . Thank You. Terri Rene DaVar-Howard
