He was born June 25, 1923, in Loveland to A. Maxwell and Margaret (Scilley) Mattoon. He received his early education in Loveland and his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Colorado State University. He pursued postgraduate work throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. Dud taught vocational agriculture in Delta, Colo., until 1955, when he moved to Longmont. After teaching vocational agriculture in Longmont for 10 years, he became the director of adult and vocational education for the St. Vrain Valley School District. Dud considered one of his greatest accomplishments to be the creation of the district’s Career Development Center. Dud retired in 1976 for health reasons and started his second career, working in adult education for the Presbyterian Church, both locally and regionally. Dud was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and the Longmont Educational Foundation. He was a ruling elder at Central Presbyterian Church and served on numerous committees, especially in the area of adult education. Dud was an avid gardener and loved travel, his mountain cabin, music and time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. Dud is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen (Kester) Mattoon; children Jan Kimble and husband Jim of Birmingham, Ala., and their children, Karen and Steve Kimble, Kit and Butch Josh and their son Erik of Frederick, Jim Mattoon and wife Judy of Loveland and their children Caleb and Claire, Jo Mattoon and husband Walt Hubis and his children, Rachel and Rebecca of Louisville; brother Dr. James Mattoon and wife Martha of Colorado Springs; sister Pat Waltermire and husband Kent of Longmont; aunt Jule Clark; sister-in-law Ida Mattoon of Loveland; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Central Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Glenn Perica and Marilyn Yoder Boeke of the church officiating. Cremation was conducted at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church in Longmont.
