Amen, 76, of Longmont, Colo., died Feb. 5, 2004, at Longmont United Hospital. He was born July 5, 1927, in Loveland to Jacob Casper Amen and Katherine (Frank) Amen. Mr. Amen moved with his family to Mead, where he attended school and graduated from Mead High School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1945 to 1946. He returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Betty Jane Walter, on March 6, 1947, at Peace Lutheran Church in Longmont. He then attended auto mechanics school in Kansas City, Mo., and returned to the Mead area and his true passion of farming, but continued to serve in the Naval Reserve until 1953. He loved to plant seeds and watch them grow. He later retired from farming and went to work in the lawn and garden department of Sears Roebuck in Longmont. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Longmont. He loved to fish and take his grandchildren with him. He loved to play cards, Aggravation and Yahtzee. He is remembered as a wonderful husband and father and as a quiet, loving and forgiving man. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jane Amen of Longmont; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Padilla and husband Gary of Evans and Katherine Lynn Kemp and husband Lars of Longmont; brother William Paul Amen of Longmont; sisters Esther Schmidt of Greeley, Alma Cox of Traverse City, Mich., and Kay Taylor of Carlsbad, Calif.; grandchildren Richard George Carlson Jr., Robert Keith Carlson, Emily Dawn Carlson, Joseph Michael Carlson, Benjamen Scott Carlson, Tony Carmen Padilla and Alex Francisco Padilla; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Arthur Amen, Jacob Amen, Victor Amen and Eddie Amen. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 1335 Francis St., Longmont. Interment will be at Foothills Gardens of Memory in Longmont. Contributions are to Messiah Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour or the Leukemia Society in care of Adamson Memorial West Chapel, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.
