Panned Gold in Australia and Was Among the First in Russell Gulch. Special to The News--Boulder, Colo. March 21 -- Alpheus Wright, one of the noted pioneers of Colorado, died at midnight last night at the state hospital in Boulder after several months of illness. Death was due to failure of the digestive organs and heart. Judge Wright came to Colorado in 1850 and was one of the first men in the Russell Gulch mining district. He moved to Boulder with his family in 1863 and has resided here ever since. He was a member of the territorial legislature in 1865, was several times attorney of Boulder County, was county judge twice and mayor of this city. In 1857 He was married to Miss Sarah J. Hutchinson, who, with three daughters, survived him. As a lawyer he was successful before court and jury. In recent years he has been an invalid. Alpheus Wright was born in St. Lawrence County, New York, August 15, 1832. He worked on the farm, attended school, taught school, obtained the means for a course at Canton and Potsdam Academies and in 1858 sought the gold fields of Australia. Returning in 1854, he resumed teaching in New York and the following year removed to Prairie Du Chien, Wis., where he prepared himself for admission to the bar. In 1856 he was elected county clerk and later a justice of the peace. He took an early interest in politics and stumped Wisconsin for General Fremont. He was admitted to the bar in 1857 and two years later reach Gilpin County, where he engaged in mining and mining practice. A daughter, Mrs. Stanton F. Lincoln, resides at Denver, and he was uncle of F. A. Giffin, Dr. L. M. Giffin, H. E. and Charles W. Rowland and Mrs. C. M. Baylor of this city. The funeral will occur from Treise's undertaking parlors at 2 p. m. tomorrow.
