He was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Fennimore, Wis., to Ora Howell and Florence Terry (Clare) Howell. He graduated from Union Free High School in Fennimore in 1934. He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1939 and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1950. He married Ruby Quarles June 22, 1941, in Rocky Ford. He was a navigator on a B-29 crew in India and Tinian, as well as in the China-Burma-India and Pacific theaters. He served for five years. Mr. Howell worked as a teacher and coach in La Junta, a brakeman for the Santa Fe Railroad, a certified public accountant, and a hospital administrator for three hospitals, including Longmont United. He was active in the Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed bridge, Colorado history, railroads, traveling and square dancing. He moved to Good Samaritan Village in Loveland in 1993 and to Longmont in 2002. He is survived by son John D. Howell Jr. and wife Kathy of Niwot; daughters Margaret Hyatt and husband Greg of Longmont and Janet Horenstein and husband Josh of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister Barbara Sexton and husband George of DeLand, Fla.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Howell, in 1999 after 57 years of marriage. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Good Samaritan Village Chapel, 2102 S. Garfield, with the Rev. George A. Huber officiating. Interment of cremains will take place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
